A safe place to talk fashion stuff. Bring a passion for fashion (high end or high street), a positive state of mind and lots of links.

Hi all. Welcome to the newbies (sorry can't remember your names even though I only read them 2 mins ago!)

shop poor spaniel. When one of our cats disappeared for 8 days, the other one was distraught. Animals really do grieve too. I don't suppose there's a lot you can do to make it better is there?

what I think you absolutely need to go through your wardrobe and be ruthless. Where do you live? Can one of us help you?

Feeling a bit better thanks. I still get short of breath if I do too much but friends and dh have been fab helping with school run etc. I feel a but weird after the whole episode. It sounds melodramatic but it was kind of like a wake up call to be happy with my life and what I've got. I've even lost my shopping urges Shock Grin

shopafrolic · 09/01/2014 20:51

Thanks Grumpy that's really helpful about the jumper as I wanted tight to the neck so I'll cross it off the list.
Linus and because maybe I need to reconsider the dress?
QueenC short of buying another dog I don't know. We'll keep an eye on her and decide over the coming weeks. Hopefully she'll settle. She's lost her hot water bottle! They used to share the same kennel at night. Glad you're feeling a bit better and that you have some help.
What whereabouts are you. I can recommend someone who can edit your wardrobe for you if you're in the South east? If not, there is info on pin to help. This book here may also be useful - originally recommended to me by Dona

Queen that's a great idea, but I would be too embarrassed for my wardrobe to come out! Glad you are feeling a bit better today.

Drywhiteplease · 09/01/2014 20:54

Oh Grumpy I tried to order that merino me + Em in cream in the sale. Said it had gone through, then I get an email to say sorry it's sold out. gah!!!
What don't give up on the resolutions, cold turkey for a year though!!why don't you do a more achievable 2/3 months until the decent S/S stuff is in the shops? I hate Crunchie bars, like eating polystyrene, makes my teeth go wierd Sad
shop your poor spaniel Sad

And YEY....Grumpy said yes to my hat Smile

WhattoWearNow · 09/01/2014 20:55

Thanks too Shop - I will get the book & then pluck up the courage for some outside help I think (goodness knows I need it)....

shopafrolic · 09/01/2014 20:58

Mig I swapped my HB subscription for Vogue as I fancied a change. I like the piece about people's wardrobes and how often they've worn each item in a season.

WhattoWearNow · 09/01/2014 21:03

I like the idea Dry of doing a dry quarter! (Not drink (hee hee), but shopping, so I could hold off until early April - I could do that, maybe...)
Royal Ascot is lovely - would love to go this year but need an invite & a new outfit so probably best that I don't have an invite (every cloud & all that!)

shopafrolic · 09/01/2014 21:04

what I won my wardrobe edit as a competition prize. A stylist came to my house. She bagged up 6 bin liners of clothes that I just would never or should never wear. I sold some on EBay, the rest made over £600 for a local charity. I used to have clothes in the loft and do a changeover every Spring summer and then Autumn winter. Now, all my clothes fit in one wardrobe, and I wear everything. It feels so much easier, and I buy much less because everything works...... If you dig through pin board you'll see a number of pins about editing your wardrobe that might help.

Thank you all for the welcome. Yes, I did have to have a new wardrobe (well, several new wardrobes, if I am honest). I am quite cross with myself, though, as I was very BAD over Christmas and put on eight lbs Shock, so it's back to the diet again this week. To be fair, Christmas Day wasn't helped by the big oven breaking down and me not finding out until the turkey had been in for three hours - copious amounts of Bucks Fizz was consumed.

I loved the vintage shop in LA - I have several maxi dresses from my younger days (the first time they were fashionable!); the video made me wonder about playing around with them. I haven't really done any dressmaking since my DC were young when I used to make lots of their things.

Anyway, thanks again for the welcome.

shopafrolic · 09/01/2014 21:10

OMG NUFC that would have been my worst nightmare on Christmas Day. You should definitely try the dressmaking again, a shame to let good skills go to waste.

I'd love to know how to sew. I'm short so I always need clothes altered, which is expensive, and it's rarely just the hem. The waist needs to be raised, the shoulders need to be dropped...I once bought a second hand sewing machine but I just don't have the time.

Maybe I should stop working and then I get the sewing machine and the puppy!!!

Drywhiteplease · 09/01/2014 21:23

One of the best skills my mother taught me. My sewing machine has saved me £££££. Make all my curtains and blinds and ,when we used to go to a lot of full length dos, I used to make a lot of my dresses.i get very excited in fabric shops Smile

MarshaBrady · 09/01/2014 21:26

Me too Dry. I loved it when I was young and adored buying fabric to make up shoddily made stuff. I thought I wanted to do it for a while but I'd already studied for five years and couldn't bear starting another three.

NUF oh no!

shopafrolic · 09/01/2014 21:26

I know where to send my alterations now dry. My mum used to sew when I was little, just never taught me. Perhaps I should try and learn as this year's new challenge.

Shop 6 bags! I'm so curious, what was in there?

shopafrolic · 09/01/2014 21:31

Lots of boho stuff, floral, floaty dresses. Stuff that didn't fit anymore - loads of pairs of jeans. Lots of tops I'd bought but didn't go with anything else I owned. Dated shoes and boots. Old suits that were way out of fashion from my office based days. Old clubbing gear. A lot of old clubbing gear.......

I've ordered that book Shop looks interesting.

Mignonette · 09/01/2014 21:37

Hello all you lovely delurkers.

Have been cheered up by your lovely comments. Thank you all so much and welcome-stick around Wine. We always welcome newcomers to the chat.

I must have imagined that lovely Heimstone shirt that is winging its way to me too Wink. it is a shade of blue that i believe Queen would like and if it fits, I'll maybe wear it to the next meet up.

Something lovely happened tonight- my Brother, SIl and two nieces came round on their way back to catch the boat back to Allemagne. I got all soppy and cried into the soft furry head of the little baby and with my older niece wrapped round my waist. Hearing my SIl recount the horror of the birth and the near loss of both of them- the OBGYN actually ripped off her shirt and bra as they hurtled her into theatre such was the rush.

That baby truly is a miracle child. Nothing about her birth and subsequent condition left any hope. She had a little Petit Mal fit yesterday too but has coped magnificently with all the travel and family dynamics swirling around like dirty water down a plughole. But there is nothing wrong with her cognitions. She is alert (despite the Pheno), bright eyed (grasping and exploring my face) and smiling. yes there is hearing loss but they think they will be able to address this. She smelt divine.

And my older niece has her first horse arriving soon- an Icelandic breed. Grumpy what can you tell me about those as I know nothing about them other than I cannot wait for my hack through the Black Forest in Spring. My older niece is long legged, healthy and so sweet and affectionate. A real little German schoolgirl on the cusp of adolescence.

Because I am going to watch that documentary this weekend- my treat for working hard. I have really put in the hours and got another writing job yesterday. It is worthy, a great magazine and invaluable exposure for a rookie.

Shop - your poor Spaniel. Does she like hot water bottles? When one of our dogs died, the other one mourned so we added a sturdy hottie to his basket and gave him a cuddly toy which seemed to give him an outlet for his grooming needs. It helped him a little.

We saw Gravity Marsha It was superb. Made me feel giddy though as I'm not too hot on 3D. You end up marvelling at the achievement of the actors and Cuaron. Plus it passes that test- no two women talk about men in the whole of the film.

We also saw The Butler, Prince of Avalanches, Mud, White House Down (crash, bang, wallop enjoyable nonsense) and there are so many more films i need to see. Check out my Pinterest Square Eyes board for suggestions, any of you.

NU - what an achievement. Like One, women like you are an inspiration with the determination and commitment weight management and loss takes. One I do envy you that strength of mind, I really do. I can be very weak-willed.

Queen I hope you are continuing to recover and having plenty of rest.

OneLittleLady · 09/01/2014 21:40

Ahh, thank you Mig Blush

shopafrolic · 09/01/2014 21:41

How's the coat Marsha? Do you love it? And your Fillipa K knit? Settling in?

OP posts:
MarshaBrady · 09/01/2014 21:46

Shop aw yes I love both very much. I wore the Filippa K to breakfast/ lunch (it was long, with shopping in between!) and have been wearing the Marant every day. Very happy to upgrade from the posh cardigan!

I love the list, she must have earned your trust very quickly. Your wardrobe is spot on now so she sounds very good.

Mig lovely post.

BecauseIsaidS0 · 09/01/2014 21:48

Mig, I know we don't really know each other (yet) but can I give you a virtual hug?

shopafrolic · 09/01/2014 21:49

She's brill. Would definitely use her again if I needed an outfit for something special - if you weren't available that is :)
