Silicone build up..

I'm pretty sure I've got some silicone build up from over use of Aussie products. I read that I can undo it, but how??

I have a v blonde dip dye if that makes any difference. Thanks!

Me too.

My hairdresser recommended using bicarb mixed to a paste with water, rub into hair and shampoo off to get rid of build-up.

I haven't been brave enough to try it yet - I'm a bit scared the colour will come off too .

I have anti colour, all bleach on my ends so I may well give that a go. I've been a hairdresser but haven't worked for years and can't remember anything!

I use Head and Shoulders shampoo and conditioner once a week - probably should just wean myself off silicones altogether but they make my hair so shiny. It will make colour fade a little though but not too bad if only once a week. You could try other clarifying shampoos but that seems to work for me. Also try using oils instead of silicone based conditioners sometimes - oil is actively good for hair whereas silicone only makes it look healthy.

Thanks shredded! I'm going to get some head and shoulders tomorrow.
I wanted to get some Paul Mitchell clarifying shampoo but £12 a bottle seems so much :(

Apparently Redken cleansing cream is amazing for clarifying, have a look at reviews on Makeupalley. I haven't used it myself though.

I've been wondering this.I use Aussie Colour mate,JF frizzy ease serum and PS Argan oil cream on my curls regularly and keep getting a silicone build up (I'm guessing that's what it is,my hair doesn't seem to get so wet either I the shower).

Would a couple washes with head and shoulders before I have to dye again do the trick?

On a positive note,Aussie is lovely and the colour mate keeps my hair red longer than anything else!

I had this problem. My hair was brittle and coarse, it was a build up of all sorts of things including my L'oreal shampoo and Aussies three minute miracle. I was putting all sorts of moisturising treatments and coconut oil on it because I thought it was dry, but if it is varnished in silicones nothing is going to go in.

I did a clarifying shampoo then bought silicone-free shampoo and conditioner. I either use Tresemme silicone free one, or Organixx, both from Boots. My hair is the best it has been ever, it is really shiny, healthy and swishy. You don't need Aussies, honest!!

You can get clarifying shampoo in boots, its not that expensive. I don't understand the point about Head and Shoulders - I just looked at DH's bottle and it is full of silicones.

just use a really cheap shampoo like supermarket own brand or even shower gel. It strips everything off and you can start again. Works for me.

You want to try an apple cider vinegar rinse. Ok it's a bit icky putting vinegar on your hair, I'll admit. But once you've rinsed it out the smell doesn't linger. I tried it a few months ago and it's amazing.

You put about half apple cider vinegar to half water in a spray bottle. Wash hair with shampoo as usual and wash out. Spray rinse all over your hair. Wash that out. Then do conditioner.

It makes my hair all swishy and shiny. It gets rid of the pesky silicones, and helps condition too. I promise. I was really skeptical til I tried it. Plus it's cheap as chips.

Can someone please explain silicone build up? I use the Aussie shampoo and conditioner, but also fret about my hair seeming dry and out of condition. After reading this thread, I'm wondering if it's silicone build up that's causing the poor condition.

I've been using The Body Shop Rain Forest range of silicone free shampoo and conditioner. I switched over a year ago and my hair has never been so shiny, bouncy and curly!! I use the volume shampoo and conditioner, grapeseed serum and brazil nut definer. I didn't use anything to strip out silicones first, maybe I should have? but, I did notice the shampoo wouldn't lather up at first....after about six washes it did, so I assumed that was when the silicones had been removed

As far as I know, the silicones build up leaving you hair looking dull... Not sure about the damage. But you might be heating and styling your hair too much to combat the dullness which is damaging it?

Honestly, try a vinegar rinse... Or "acv rinse" if you wanna google it.

Abandoned the thread, sorry. I've always been told head and shoulders works but I'm going to look for something silicone free instead.

Apple vinegar rinse sounds fine to me; I'll get onto it.

My hair has been looking really greasy and flat recently, and I've been using Aussie for months I thought it was silicone free!

Mine is also greasy, flat, dull and weirdly dry too I do use Aussie. Have also been using Redken Extreme as some highlights I had done in Oct left my hair having a nervous breakdown. Hmmm..I'm wondering if I've overloaded my hair now.

I've just bought the new l'oreal shampoo and conditioner that is silicone free.

It's ok, my hair looks alright.

Well well..I've just washed my hair in Tresemme Deep Cleansing shampoo, which is their clarifying stuff, then used my usual conditioner (Redken Extreme) and voila all is well again. My hair actually looks shiny and bouncy which it hasn't in ages I only had it in the house for dd to use to get chlorine out of her hair after swimming. I never considered using it on my highlighted hair. But I think now there must have been some sort of build up on my hair and the worse it was looking the more treatments I was putting on it . Think I'll be using this once a week from now on. And its cheap too I do still love my Redken shampoo and conditioner though.

Breaking news!! Poundland and savers sell a sillicone free shampoo and conditioner. I'm going to try it tonight and report back. If anyone can't find it by them I'm happy to pick some up and post it if you cover the cost.

You have to use the original Head and Shoulders - a few of the different varieties have silicones in, so check. Tresemme deep cleansing one sounds worth a shot though. I don't want to go silicone free - I just want to make sure it doesn't build up too much. A bit like I know make up clogs my skin, but I'm not going to stop wearing it!

Totally agree Shredded. But I figured if I wash and condition silicone free a couple of times a week it may help.
