Silicone build up..

I'm pretty sure I've got some silicone build up from over use of Aussie products. I read that I can undo it, but how??

I have a v blonde dip dye if that makes any difference. Thanks!

Silicone build up leaves your hair looking dry and brittle, and it feels stiff and not swishy at all. Intensive conditioners don't help as they can't penetrate the hair. Particularly bad if you use straighteners because then you are really varnishing it on.

Check shampoos ingredients for anything that ends in ...cones.

I use Babybliss Big Hair after using Aussie shampoo and conditioner and had noticed my hair looking dryer, especially at the ends. I thought it was because I was dying it, but the hairdresser thought it was the BBH. Now I wonder if it's to do with silicones. Might give the clarifying shampoos a go.

Herbal essences have just bought out a range of silicone free.

Best thing is it looks and smells like the old style herbal essences!!

Baby shampoo is pretty good too.

I wrote a while ago about seeing a hairdresser who specialises in curly hair. He trained for ten years in New York with the woman who wrote the Curly Girl handbook so I reckon he knows what he's talking about ( and totally transformed my frizzy, dyed blonde wavy hair)

He totally scared me off using anything with silicones in as they basically coat your hair in plastic and prevent it from absorbing moisture. He recommended using the Bodyshop Rainforest range. The shampoos are sulphate free and the conditioners don't contain silicone. It's taken a few weeks but my hair is no longer frizzy and dry. I got rid off all my silicone based products and will never use them again! It's a vicious cycle that you just have to go cold turkey on and stop. And your hair will get better.

HTH

Scarleto, did you get your curls back?? I'll post a pic tomorrow of the state of my hair when left to dry naturally. I think I may well go silicone free.

I've been reading up on it and it sounds like the best option for mixed race hair.

Just picked up the tresemme deep cleanse huge bottle in savers for £2.99 as opposed to the smaller bottle for £4.99 in sainsburys!

Santa, yes my hair is much more curly now! I thoroughly recommend the Curly Girl handbook too, it's written by someone who really understands all types of curly hair and has some great tips!

Scarletohello · 18/12/2013 12:38

The Devacurl range is also specifically designed for curly hair. You can only get it on Amazon but you can get a trial pack to see if you like it. Best in mind tho with all these kind of products it will take some time for your hair to adjust so be patient!

Thanks very much Scarleto I'm going to order the book after Christmas.

I miss my curls desperately :(

Here is a good article about why you should avoid silicone

Are there any hair oils that don't contain silicone?

CeeceeBloomingdale · 18/12/2013 20:02

I switched to bodyshop rainforest a few weeks ago, mainly for allergy reasons. My hair has got so soft and much less frizzy as a result (normally coarse and frizzy). I'm converted.

scripsi · 18/12/2013 20:06

I use whatever bog standard supermarket anti dandruff shampoo (for greasy hair, though I don't have greasy hair) that strips it all off for me, once a week.

Are there any hair oils that don't contain silicone?

Just use 100% argan oil like this

janmoomoo · 18/12/2013 21:01

But (sorry for harping on) Head and Shoulders contains dimethicone (silicone) - even the original classic one.

SantasTessTackle · 18/12/2013 21:26

Glad I didn't get that then Jan. I'll stick to the tresemme cleansing one and the silicone free!

bruffin · 18/12/2013 21:38

Im not over keen on the tresemme cleansing one. I found it builds up just as much as the others.

SantasTessTackle · 18/12/2013 21:47

Bruffin, it's silicone free though? Oh don't confuse meeeee [sulk]
