I've spent about three winters freezing my nips off trying to look cool wearing a leather jacket in the playground. I've now realised I just looked cold and possibly a bit of a wanker. Ergo I need a proper coat.

As a fully paid up member of the HoC cult, I need it to be either a nice berry colour, navy or grey. I will not countenance real fur on it so nice ones like Aigle/Canada Goose/Moncler are out.

So I have seen these two I quite like (as much as it is possible for me to like anything so functional). So which is better? Or are there other, better options?

Lands End (I know)

North Face

Re sizing for the Taylor. I'm a size 10 mostly, occassional 12 and I have a 38. It is a good fit.

I tried the 36 but it was too tight though zipped up fine. They seem to be quite roomy around the bust and shoulder area but quite slim fit over the hips. Sleeves are longish but fine for me.

There does seem to be some confusion over sizing. Apparently Didriksons have altered their sizing. Beware though as some retailers are marking the 38 as a 10 and some as a 12. So go by the continental size. I wouldn't size down on this season's stock based on my experiences.

LordPalmerston · 03/11/2013 03:20

I don't feel frumpy in lands end or northface. Honest. It's a cold weather coat. shrugs

Twinklestarstwinklestars · 03/11/2013 03:28

After getting sick of freezing and soaked on school runs I invested in a didriksons Veronica and its lovely, well worth the money.

OrchidLass · 03/11/2013 07:11

Can anyone advise on Didrikson sizing please, I'm a 14/16 and unsure if they come up true to size or not.

PatoBanton · 03/11/2013 08:23

Oh sorry listen to Deux
I wasn't sure if the new sizing was just a rumour

I am a standard issue 10 and have big norks atm and the 36 (8) is perfect but it was last season's stock, I am sure

sedgieloo · 03/11/2013 08:29

Savoy and greta - I got the Taylor as warmer and cheaper than the greta. I'm more than pleased with it. Sizing wise...I'm comfortably a 10 in somewhere like zara, a snug 10 in topshop and I'm tall. I got the 36 which is an 8. It's fitted on me with room for just a couple of thin jumpers layered. The 38 was a little looser and a more casual fit and at first seemed perfect, but I liked the fitted look of the 8. The material has a cotton rich look and feel rather than synthetic. This years model they are more true to size, if last years size down. Laws of Kirkcudbright had the best price and next day delivery. Hope that helps.

PatoBanton · 03/11/2013 08:34

Ooh minewas from Laws

PatoBanton · 03/11/2013 08:34

have they got new stock then, got the last 36 few months ago

PatoBanton · 03/11/2013 08:36

Ooh they have! Smile

Must be as price gone up but still cheapest anywhere I think

the purple is very purple and doesn't suit me terribly well but was all they had left, dk green and navy tres nice

LordPalmerston · 03/11/2013 08:37

pato - who were you before?

noddyholder · 03/11/2013 08:38

I don't think they are frumpy either. They are fit for purpose like bikinis on beaches. I have a lovely berghaus and a north face and feel ok in both. Would love a moncler but too £ I like these coats though think they look nice too

PatoBanton · 03/11/2013 08:42

FA in the old days Smile

Abzs · 03/11/2013 12:30

I would have sized a scandinavian 36 as a 10 when it was up to me. We had 'fun' sizing, and explaining the sizing of, the clothing depending on whether it was british, french, italian, scandinavian or american. But since I'm not WOH post DS, I haven't had chance to see any new season Didriksons (and what we had when I was was mostly kids) so I've no idea if that still holds true.

AmberNectarine · 03/11/2013 13:11

Of course I now want a Didrikson Lindsay which I can't find in my size for love nor money.

Is this the Lands End one?
www.landsend.co.uk/Women%C2%92s_Shimmer_Down_Coat_/pp/P_26418.html?cgid=8360

It's nice, it's machine washable and water resistant (I noticed some people have doubts) and the reviews are good - and it's 25% off, at the moment!

ouryve · 03/11/2013 17:13

And I noticed from one of the reviews that it's one of their lines that isn't extremely generously sized.
