Which coat? WARNING! Boring 'performance' coats may feature.

I've spent about three winters freezing my nips off trying to look cool wearing a leather jacket in the playground. I've now realised I just looked cold and possibly a bit of a wanker. Ergo I need a proper coat.

As a fully paid up member of the HoC cult, I need it to be either a nice berry colour, navy or grey. I will not countenance real fur on it so nice ones like Aigle/Canada Goose/Moncler are out.

So I have seen these two I quite like (as much as it is possible for me to like anything so functional). So which is better? Or are there other, better options?

Lands End (I know)

North Face

I haven't had any problem with rain and my Land's End down parka - it's certainly been out in rain but not for a prolonged period of time. Usually when I need it most it's been on crisp cold days. It's very warm.

noddyholder · 03/11/2013 17:41

What about if you don't need performance but like the look Are any of the cheaper ones warm? I have 2 but short ish

BringMeTea · 03/11/2013 18:41

Someone asked upthread about Didrikson's sizing. I am in Scandinavia and tried on Taylor, greta and another one I forget recently. Was shocked to find they came up v small on the chestal region. I am a 12/14 uk but with big boobs. I had read lots of reviews saying size down. This season at least do NOT do that. The Taylor was worst offender. I think i was up to 46 before it fit boobs with no strain.

QueenofLouisiana · 03/11/2013 19:21

My Didriksons Taylor did nicely for 6 hours at the rugby festival today. It is replacing my LandsEnd shimmer down coat which has done 5 or 6 years. New one is more waterproof but doesn't feel so snug. However, my legs were chilly in jeans today- body and bum toasty warm.

QueenofLouisiana · 03/11/2013 19:23

Oh, in case you need help with sizing on Didriksons, I am a comfortable 14 (closer to 16 than 12). The 42 fits well, can put jumpers underneath.

LittleTulip · 03/11/2013 19:48

The north face arctic parka was a little too long for me cos in a short arse, I have this it's go the same down filling.

I wear a medium I'm a 12-14

LordPalmerston · 03/11/2013 20:38

think the north face is a bit more water resistant than my lands end one
by that i mean hail and torrential rain for 5 hours in a field watching rubgy

smellylittleorange · 03/11/2013 21:39

Thought you all may like to know about a Blacks discount code just used Friends20 ..worked on an already discounted Northface triclinate coat for DH just got it for £120 when originally £150 reduced from £200!

LordPalmerston · 03/11/2013 21:54

Thanks

Loopytiles · 03/11/2013 22:26

They're all so pricey! And am not slim. Would really like one under £150 and below knee for commuting!

OrchidLass · 04/11/2013 09:01

Ah I wish I'd never seen this thread i'm so desperate for a Didrikson now and can't decide between the Taylor and the Lindsay. Plus, they are bloody expensive so it would have to last me a loooooong time! :)

chartreuse · 04/11/2013 12:08

I have a lands end stadium squall for when it's snowing, but most days I wear the J Crew Wintress in navy, toasty warm, fairly stylish. J crew opening in Regent St this week so you could have a try on.

There is no way a wool coat would keep me warm in winter. My wool coats are for spring and autumn only.

AmberNectarine · 04/11/2013 20:01

UPDATE: i went for a try on this morning. The Aigle Cuckmere (they sell it sans fur) was very warm but looked mumsy on me due to length, plus I really do want a furry hood, just not a real one. The North Face was gorgously warm and a nice purple, but too plain for me (I like a bit of flashy hardware), so I have ordered the Barbour. Will report back.

ew

LordPalmerston · 04/11/2013 20:42

actually its ok - just too short for extreme weather

MIND YOU amber - what actually do you need it for? ;)

AmberNectarine · 04/11/2013 20:52

Standing around at the park on my terms (ie no snow or rain). If/when DS gets involved in sports when standing outside is needed and I can't send his dad I will get a proper sports-mum coat. Did like the Lands End a lot but big tits + big arse - belt = brick.

LordPalmerston · 04/11/2013 21:00

Lol. You weakling. Grin

I'll offer you 5 hours in cold every Bloody Sunday.

AmberNectarine · 04/11/2013 21:50

And I will respectfully decline. That is the only good thing to be said about life with two toddlers - indoor soft play.

Because I know you've all been waiting with baited breath, my Barbour arrived and I fricking love it. Got caught in the pissing rain and was snug as a bug.

Special thanks to mysteryfairy who made me aware of the existence of the navy!

I've been waiting Amber Blush

I'm slightly obsessed with it...

What's the sizing like?

AmberNectarine · 08/11/2013 22:45

I actually got a 12, as opposed to my usual 10. Could probably have got the 10, but it may have been a smidge snug on the busy, plus I like room for a jumper or two...

OP posts:
AmberNectarine · 08/11/2013 22:46

Bust, obvs.

OP posts:
ebaymad · 08/11/2013 22:50

Good to know.

I'm trying to hold off buying it until there's a sale (and I'm skint)

Thanks for the update and enjoy!

Fluffycloudland77 · 09/11/2013 08:10

Which Barbour did you get? I want a non frumpy coat too.

I look beyond awful in my musto coat.

I need a coat intervention Sad
