hmmmmm - I eat absolute filth compared to you lot. I'm tempted to send Sleep a food diary but fear she may never speak to me again. Am currently munching on a bowl of Cheerios, after a glass of orange juice with two big mugs of tea. But as Marsha and I were discussing on Sat - that is why I am a fatty, and she isn't Grin

Sleepwhenidie · 14/10/2013 08:19

Fatty where Shop?! Hardly. Happy to look at your food diary and I promise to still be friends, no matter how many Cheerios you decide to carry on eating -bin them, bin them!-- Grin

mignonette · 14/10/2013 08:25

My weakness is ice cream and it plays havoc with me because I do have a very real allergy to milk sugars (had to be hospitalised at several weeks old because of feeding problems). I eat ice cream because I luffs it but I'll spare you a description of the price I pay.

I shouldn't eat so much bread because again, it is bloating and am sure it makes me sluggish. I am a toast and home made jam for breakfast person- not ideal.

I have cut out most of the meat from my diet. I eat unsmoked bacon and no other smoked meat because gastric cancer runs through my family like a river. I'll eat chicken, fish and seafood more regularly and a little steak every few weeks. Pork occasionally. I love pork but as I get older I find meat a little heavy.

I get my five a day and more- I eat at least six tomatoes a day as I love them. Raw. Plus extra cooked if I can.

Diet coke is my vice too and I have to stop as it is like battery acid on the teeth and I am, getting to old to risk it. I don't drink a huge amount though and have decaff.

I agree with Mom that foods as close to their natural state as possible and avoid low fat labels. They are hugely meaningless anyway. I also eat butter in moderation. Seasoning is key to food and having a Pescetarian DH and steps I have learned how to eat Quorn based meals and cook with them.

I really recommend Quorn as a replacement in Shepherds and Cottage Pie, Chile and Bolognaise. I use Laura Santini Taste No 5 to get the flavour in.

Sleepwhenidie · 14/10/2013 08:28

Sorry Mom I meant to say! the Flyte track isn't available to buy or download yet but I will let you know when it is!

mignonette · 14/10/2013 08:30

Oh and I don't drink whole milk at all, haven't since I was a baby but I love cheese. The Lactose is converted in hard cheese making so can eat with impunity. I would eat Parmesan like an apple if I could.

I do only have a few spoons of ice cream a day. That way I can eat it without too much pain. But I really really love it.

No hot drinks. I have never drunk tea or coffee. I hate drinking plain water too- I get very nauseated by it (peculiar I am). Not huge amounts of chocolate but am a sucker for sweets. I have to be careful because 'sucky seets' as the children called them like mints, pear drops I could eat a LOT of.

Sleepwhenidie · 14/10/2013 08:36

mig I really would try and stay off he diet coke. It's vile stuff, nothing to recommend it all..I can't say I would recommend quorn particularly either (pretty far from the natural state, whole food thing), but as I said, whatever works for you. Personally I would rather eat a vegetarian diet most of the time and have good quality meat a couple of times a week if I felt I needed less meat.

libertychick · 14/10/2013 08:48

Oh this is great advise. I have been having museli for breakfast recently, either M&S or Dorset Farms - mostly because it can be hard to get DD to eat in the morning but she'll share museli with me. I 'filter' out the dried fruit (generally remove between half or two thirds of the raisins etc) and have it with skimmed milk and full fat organic yogurt. My plan is to switch to porridge or make my own museli - I'm just lazy though and default to an easy option.

Will keep diary for a few days - my diet is not too bad but there is a lot of processed food - mostly as DH is in charge of shopping and cooking and he tends to go for easy options like microwave bags of rice rather than cooking it from scratch. And a very sweet tooth - especially at night.

libertychick · 14/10/2013 08:48

And Shop you are not fat!!!

mignonette · 14/10/2013 08:51

Sleep I agree about the coke. I tend to eat Quorn because DH likes having some texture and concentrated protein and cooking too many meals is a drag. We only eat it once a week and tend to have fish and vegetables for the other meals plus pasta and rice. I also love Ebly (Kids love it). Not something you find growing in fields but still a natural food product. I can't eat large amounts of food in one meal as I have an Ulcer ( big part of the reason for cutting out meat as that's how my Father's Stomach cancer started) and get very uncomfortable. My Ulcer was caused by Diclofenac taken for Sciatica last year.

shopafrolic · 14/10/2013 09:08

I'm only laughing because Marsha was saying the weight goes on her tummy, I was saying she had nothing there and then I pinched my more than 2 inches to prove the point. I am fine with my body shape, but it is wobbly, I know I don't eat as well as I could, and now that I'm past the big 4-OH I think I should take a bit more care of myself.
Although after the physical trauma I put my system through in my teens through to my mid thirties with the clubber's lifestyle it could well be shutting the gate after the horse has bolted! Grin
I definitely don't drink enough liquid though - I know that for fact - probably only 2 cups of tea and a glass of water a day. (or 27 glasses of prosecco!)

Sleepwhenidie · 14/10/2013 09:13

Ouch mig...but probably even more good reason to ditch the coke Smile

liberty I'd suggest that your sweet tooth in the evening isn't perhaps as ''inbuilt' as you think and the instant rice (or whatever high GI, starchy carbs) you are having at dinner is accentuating it, because of the insulin spike they cause, followed by a crash, leaving you wanting more insulin (sugar). It will be interesting to look at your diary and see what difference a few tweaks make to things like that Smile.

shopafrolic · 14/10/2013 09:18

Lots of gorgeous Malene Birger on you know where today

Annianni · 14/10/2013 09:38

Loving the food chat this morning...

I don't drink tea or coffee and usually start the day with hot water with lemon it generally goes rapidly downhill from there though

But after reading on here this morning, I've just had 2 scrambled eggs on wholemeal granary toast (without the lashings of butter that I'd usually add)
And I resisted the pancakes with maple syrup that I made for Ds2.

I'm making my version of chicken fried rice for this evening (we all eat together) with brown rice, lots of chicken, onion, peas and courgette.

So what should I have for lunch?

Bread is my downfall, we spent yesterday demolishing a ham, cheese and chive loaf I made at lunchtime.

I do lapse and have diet coke sometimes (usually when tired, for the caffeine kick)

mignonette · 14/10/2013 09:38

I share Libertys evening sweet tooth (along with cheese) and I think your advice is solid Sleep. I get terrible hypoglycemic crashes mid morning sometimes after eating jam for breakfast. I break out into a sweat, get pale and faint and nauseated. The last time it happened I had to sit down in Waitrose and cram banana into my mouth as fast as possible. I am not Diabetic. I can't eat porridge (Blech) or cereal so am looking for an alternative that doesn't involve culinary adventuring at 6.30.

I have been bidding on a bag on Ebay (well several) because the maker of the bag has been employed as creative director at a major US fashion house after her brand crashed and I think the eponymous bags will develop extra kudos. Don't want to say in case loads of lurkers bid up on the bags (sorry Lurkers). PM me if you want to know Smile. Think my DD might like one of them and my sons GF another. They are good utilitarian satchel type leather designs.

I bought http://www.galeria-kaufhof.de/store/p/Jil-Sander-Sun-Men-EdT/1003514968 this from Jil Sander in GALERIA Kaufhof Frankfurt Hauptwache on Saturday. I like men's scents on Women and after reading an article by Susan Irvine in British Vogue on the plane in which this is recommended by parfumeurs like Frederick Malle I decided to stop stealing my DH's Givenchy Pi and buy mens scent of my own.

We then ate Marzipan Kuche at Cafe Laumer and Cafe Mozart (greedy) and bought bags of salty pretzels then had a browse in August Pfuller on Goethe Strasse. Loads of labels here but mainly generic like Wang, Jacobs. I did like a label called Talbot Runhoff that I haven't heard of before. here. The lovely red Tulip shaped dress is covetable and I can see some of you MNers wearint it in my minds eye.

mignonette · 14/10/2013 09:41

Anni I often have some chicken meat with loads of sliced tomato and I serve the chicken wrapped in plenty of lettuce leaves.

A little salad dressing or naughty Mayo (a spoon) and that makes a good lunch with no bread.

Sleepwhenidie · 14/10/2013 09:47

Glad you said that Anni, i can bang on about this for hours and was beginning to worry about derailing the fashion but it goes that way sometimes on here doesn't it Smile. Keep note of how you feel this morning, energy and appetite wise, after your eggs.

Mig how about unsweetened peanut butter instead of jam on your toast in the morning? Maybe a bit of banana too? V interested in your ice cream/milk allergy thing. I learnt last week that if you have an allergy to a food, the slight immune defence your body mounts when you consume it can give you a bit of a high, making that very food that is bad for you highly addictive Smile. fascinating stuff.

shopafrolic · 14/10/2013 09:50

you know you want to

libertychick · 14/10/2013 09:55

Hmmm that makes a lot of sense Sleep - for a while earlier this year I stopped eating carbs with my evening meal and now that you mention it I didn't snack in the evening either then.

Linus for lunch (if I'm trying to avoid bread) I tend to have soup - something filling like smoked haddock chowder or tomato and lentils. I'll often have a slice of cheese with it or some chicken. All this food talk is making me hungry!!! Last year I was obsessed with chicken soup and used to make a lovely one with chicken thighs and lots of carrots, leeks, peas, garlic and onion - so, so good.

shopafrolic · 14/10/2013 09:55

Aaaaaagggghhh - just refreshed the page and horrible advertising has appeared in big panels either side of this thread. Too distracting - and unwanted. Huff.

shopafrolic · 14/10/2013 09:55

And weirdly refreshed again and it has now disappeared Hmm

Annianni · 14/10/2013 09:57

Thanks, will try a salad for lunch.

My diet (sometimes) isn't too bad. I make almost everything from scratch, we have brown rice, sometimes wholemeal pasta, never have white bread evil stuff never eat ready meals etc.

My problem is portion sizes, snacking, and eating when bored/upset etc.
Oh, and not enough exercise.

It doesn't help that dh can eat loads (active job) do no other exercise and still have a six pack Envy

Annianni · 14/10/2013 10:00

:o at the hat Shop.

Chicken soup recipe please Liberty

libertychick · 14/10/2013 10:02

Sorry, that last comment about lunches was for Anni not linus!!!

Question re Outnet delivery - what happens if you are out when they try to deliver?

libertychick · 14/10/2013 10:09

This chicken soup Anni. Instead of roast chicken I used to buy a pack of chicken thighs and simmer them with bay leaves, onion, carrot etc to make stock, then use the stock and the lovely tender chicken meat to make the soup - really delicious, total comfort food.

libertychick · 14/10/2013 10:11

Ok now my display has gone all weird with advertising...
