Should I get a pixie cut or will I regret it?

I think (??) I have the right kind of features to suit a pixie cut - smallish, long neck, defined jaw line...but I have some questions. I've attached a pic to my profile - my hair looks a bit rubbish because it's wet, but it's the best photo I have to show my features and face shape.

Questions:

  1. Am not worried about cutting my hair as I've gone from long to short bob before, but will there be a horrible in between stage if I want to grow out a pixie? Or can this be avoided with the right cuts?

  2. Any ideas what cut I should go for? I don't want to go Jean Seberg short straight away, but don't want a half-assed in between style either - ideally it would have some length on top and some fringe. There's a slight wave in my hair. I don't mind washing it every day but am lazy with styling - 10 mins max.

  3. Do I need to choose my hairdresser very carefully? I have one that I trust, but don't know how he is with short hair. I hear a lot of people complaining about how hard it is to get a decent short cut.

  4. I've been scouring S&B for similar threads and noticed a lot of people say pixie cuts only look good on the very young (under 25 - I'm early 30s) or over 60s. Any reason or is that bollocks?

Am ready for people to tell me not to and that I'll regret it! I know for sure that I look better with short hair than long...the question is how short ;) Sorry for the epic post!

Hi Crash

  1. The horrid growing out experience is compulsory, IME.
  2. My cut takes 2 minutes to style. I use styling powder and ruffle it up a bit. If I want to take more time I straighten the long fringe, which takes another couple of minutes.
  3. If you trust your hairdresser that's a good place to start. If he's good with longer hair that's also good.
  4. I'm in my 40's, have an asymmetrical pixie cut and it looks fabulous. Trust me :)

I tried to grow out my hair earlier this year and it looked awful. I love my short hair and don't think I ever want to go back.

I have really long hair and I know I wouldn't be brave enough. I think it would look stunning on you though, I think it's a classic for any age.

CrashPotato · 23/09/2013 15:55

Thanks SunshineSuperNova, that's all good news apart from 1!

It's kind of just occurred to me that I don't see that many people in real life with pixie cuts that I really like. Not sure if this is because most people, especially my age and younger, have really long hair, or because it's really hard to get a good pixie cut. Hmm. Pinterest is awash with pixie styles that I like, but they are all on beautifully styled and made up people!

I think it could look stunning on you - you have a sort of retro look about you, IYKWIM and look like you could really carry it off. You could have it cut into a style that could be cut into a layered bob as it grows if you don't want to keep it short.

I am 50 and got my hair cut short last year - not quite pixie cut, bit longer and wispy. I love it - short hair is much more versatile than you would think. Also I can blast it into shape the morning without even having to open my eyes Smile

CrashPotato · 23/09/2013 15:58

MyBoys I didn't know I had a retro face! Is it the lipstick?! I like the idea of a style that could grow into a short bob quite quickly...

I had a pixie cut a few years ago. Will add a pic to my profile (but will remove it after a bit).

I loved it, but yes, it looked shit growing out Shock

SabrinaMulhollandJjones · 23/09/2013 16:02

I think you could definitely carry it off, going by your profile picture. Smile

But.....I really like it as it is.

CrashPotato · 23/09/2013 16:03

Thanks BitchyRestingFace that would be really helpful. I like your daughter's pixie cut - unless that's you and you're a really really young MNer Grin I LOVE pixies on little girls, cutest thing ever.

Sabrina thanks, I do like my current bob, but I've had it for aaages now :)

There, done.

Thanks, DD loves hers!

TiredyCustards · 23/09/2013 16:10

I had mine cut from shoulder-length to pixie cut in August, I haven't missed it at all!

My hairdresser wouldn't cut it as short as I wanted, he gave me a longish fringe as a security blanket. I'm going back this Saturday to have it cut shorter!

I took in a photo of Mia Wasikowska, she has a lovely pixie cut. Very feminine.

CrashPotato · 23/09/2013 16:12

Thanks Bitchy it really suits you! Love the long sides - I think I'd like something similar but with a heavier, mussed up fringe. It definitely helps that you have very big eyes and a small chin. Mine aren't that big - bigger with lots of mascara though, and I think short hair makes them look bigger, doesn't it?

GobblersKnob · 23/09/2013 16:12

I had mine cut into a pixie 4 days ago and I LOVE it, mine is vey similar to this and was just past my shoulders before.

  1. I have grown out several pixies in the past and not found it too painful, I have wavy hair and find with a good cut and not caring if it looks a bit undone, it is okay, if fact you can find some quite interesting styles on the way.

  2. Styling? about 5 seconds, next.....

  3. Yes, I think you need someone good to cut it, but if you trust your hairdresser and they know your hair, no reason why they won't do it well.

  4. Bollocks, I'm 38.

Do it, do it, do it, do it. And very very short ;)

piratecat · 23/09/2013 16:13

hiya, i think it would really suit you, you've great features.

the only thing is they do take a bit of faffing about, simple to dry but they generally have to be dried iyswim. dd (pic on my profile) went from long to pixie. she has hers swept over to the side, most of the time, but sometimes has a side parting with the longer side ruffled upwards.

gel and hairspray + mum to do it lol.

piratecat · 23/09/2013 16:15

deffo depends on your hair type with the upkeep. i had mine very short yrs back and as mine is fine, it needed product so it didn't look like a pancake if i left it!

CrashPotato · 23/09/2013 16:16

Gah Gobblers that's a stunning cut!!

OP posts:
Rockdoctor · 23/09/2013 16:17

I've done it a couple of times - from a mumsy bob to a pixie cut. This time it is staying short.

My only comment with hairdressers is that I have had the best results by going to a new hairdresser (always recommended or expensive), who doesn't associate me with a particular style. I think the danger with a hairdresser you know is that they will try to be cautious and you'll end up with an in-between style based on what you already have.

CrashPotato · 23/09/2013 16:17

Love the softness of your DD's cut pirate, it's v feminine.

OP posts:
piratecat · 23/09/2013 16:19

lol crash if you said that to her she'd be mortified, lol she likes being mistaken for a boy. I cut it lol. It's got nothing in it in that pic, she can have it much more messy with wax.

CrashPotato · 23/09/2013 16:25

Fair enough, pirate but she looks nothing like a boy there Grin

Do it...my hair used to be down my back and I got it all chopped off at 21. Never regretted it even when arsehole drunk men have told me I look like a man and would suit it longer. Will post some pics quick on my profile for you to have a look at. And I'm 39.....

LeoandBoosmum · 23/09/2013 16:35

You remind me a bit of Anne Hathaway and I think you'd really suit it like hers in these pics...same cut, different angle:

That's my pics up. One with blonde hair and one with red. Will take them down shortly...

You've got a really pretty young face and don't look as though you're in your 30's !

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 23/09/2013 16:36

I'm going against the grain and think you should grow it!

CrashPotato · 23/09/2013 16:37

Thanks ryan, love the red version (can't see the cut of the blonde one so clearly) - v pretty and michelle williams-esque.
