Wearing makeup every day

Just been looking at a trashy website Blush of pictures of celebs without makeup and there is no denying in my mind that most people, me included, look better with makeup on.

When I have made the effort everyone always says "you look nice" or "you look well" and that is because I don't have naturally smooth skin, or dark eyebrows/lashes, and makeup suits me. I am just lazy.

So, those of you who do it every day, how long do you think it should take to apply bb cream mixed with a bit of foundation, concealer, pencil eye liner, one colour of eyeshadow and mascara? I don't really do blusher and lips will be just a touch of gloss as lipstick doesn't really suit me.

What should I do with my eyebrows? They are quite a nice shape and fairly dark - I can't stand the new HD eyebrows ... I don't want to do the school run looking like Katie Price!

Minty,it always takes me an hour but that would include shower and drying hair plus having breakfast and make up.

Foundation
Mascara
Lip gloss.
nail varnish to match whatever dress I'm wearing
Hair band, clip or flower again to match what ever dress I'm wearing.
Hair straighteners.
I guess I do take pride in my appearance. xx

My morning make up routine on a non-work day is a 120 second job (I know because I just timed it) - mix of beauty flash balm and tinted moisturiser smoothed on together, mascara, brow pencil, lipstick (from tube, blotted once and applied again). Blusher if time before DS2 has a meltdown.

On a work day I more or less do the same, but slightly slower! Always add blusher, but don't usually bother with eye make up. Will use lipliner though, and spend longer brushing my brows into a sensible shape. It's still no more than a five minute job.

Fuckitthatlldo · 19/09/2013 10:13

Hmmm. Well perhaps I can be the first person to admit that it takes me a good half an hour (and that's if I'm trying to be quick!) If I'm faffing, drinking tea, and mumsnetting at the same time it can take three quarters of an hour - sometimes even up to an hour!

I don't wear it every day though - only if I'm going out somewhere.

I don't get it. I don't wear any more products than anyone else here: tinted moisturiser, touche eclat, blusher, dab of highlighter, eyeliner, one eyeshadow, brow pencil and mascara (I'll often do my lipstick on the bus or whatever) and a bit of powder. So why does it take everyone else just five minutes? It takes me a full five minutes or more just to get my eyeliner right.

Is there a trick I'm missing? Or are others too embarrassed to admit just how much time they spend on something frivolous?

missbopeep · 19/09/2013 10:21

I don't see how the 5 mins make up is possible if you use foundation.

You need to allow moisturiser to sink in. They say 10 mins- ok you can do that while you are showering or cleaning your teeth etc.

But it takes me at least 5 minutes to apply foundation well- looking at it in harsh light, blending edges, adding some concealer.

Then 30 secs for eye brow powder.
Same for blusher, eye pencil and shadow.

But I need to apply at least 3 coats of mascara and that takes time.

JustBecauseICan · 19/09/2013 10:25

I put serum on, then moisturiser, then go and do something else, chivvy dd, or get dressed...then primer, then something else again, then foundation/BB (2 layers with a bit of BB thrown around liberally) Then eyes, which I don't spend much time on at all.

So it works out as 5 mins concentrated, but over the space of prob 30 mins.

squoosh · 19/09/2013 10:45

missbopeep I put my serum and moisturiser on about a half hour before I start applying my makeup.

I've been applying makeup for years so I've developed some major blending skillz!

MissDD1971 · 19/09/2013 10:53

Depends how I want to look.

Generally every day it's stick foundation (Bobbi Brown) or powder (Clinique) with creme blush (MAC), and mascara (collection 2000). I sometimes but not always put on lipgloss or lipstick (any). Put Palmers Cocoa butter lipbalm on before lipstick/gloss.

I can literally do this in 5-10 minutes on train - hussy that I am!

If I want to go further eyeshadow or eyeliner I can put on in 5 minutes or so.

Hopefully · 19/09/2013 11:25

I don't count moisturiser as part of my make up routine bopeep. I shower, brush teeth, wash my face and moisturise face and body in about 15 mins, then do make up 10-30 mins later, depending on how efficiently the morning is going. Also I don't need to blend my foundation - the match is good enough and I don't wear much. If I am going out for an evening and wearing more, I have to be slightly more aware of it, obviously.

valiumredhead · 19/09/2013 12:18

5 minutes for foundation?Shock of nod off of I spent that long on itGrin
