I did it!

MrsS, we need plates Grin. And cutlery.

We very much need MORE bloody bookcases. But am not actually sure where we would put them.

I have purchased another small junkshop table (a semicircular one originally from IKEA, the sort that pushes against the wall) to spray gold Grin.

bigTillyMint · 12/09/2013 09:05

Well, the npower man came to service the boiler/heating only a couple of weeks ago, so it does make me wonder what he did...

We are very lucky in having a local online forum - have got rid of loads of stuff that way!

motherinferior · 12/09/2013 09:10

And you have lovely local charity shops too, BTM

herbaceous · 12/09/2013 09:53

We have a really good local sell and swap Facebook page. I get rid of a few things a week on there, including clothes that are now too big to prevent me getting fatter again. Ha.

Re flights, EasyJet denies all knowledge of such pleasant flight times. We are now also perusing Gozo, Barcelona and the Canaries, though worry the latter might be a bit dull.

Stropperella · 12/09/2013 10:17

I have always tended to give our unwanted/outgrown stuff away to friends and relatives, Freecycle, charity shops or the women's refuge. I have given away A LOT of stuff over the last decade, including large items of furniture and, well, all manner of things really. I have in the past been the recipient of much generosity in times of trouble, so this has all been in a spirit of "pass it on". However, I have realised that the only way to get the dcs to part with some of their old stuff is dangling a cash incentive in front of them. So I have taken car-booting advice from my lovely neighbour - i.e. have a price in mind for all your stuff before you go so you can just flog it quickly to all the traders who rush up and try to unpack your car for you. Currently have about a third of our bedroom filled with a large pile of stuff to go - and dd hasn't got started on her room yet and I'm slightly pressuring ds to face the giant boxes of Playmobil under his bed.

wilbur · 12/09/2013 10:44

I give away a lot of stuff to charity, dds clothes go to a couple of friends with small girls, but the boys' clothes rarely make it past ds2 in any kind of wearable state, so they get stuck in the fabric recycling bag which the council collects. I also love Freecycle and the local one is very active, trouble is I then can't resist picking stuff up... Although I have created a little outdoor haven using pallets and various bits picked up from Freecycle that I am tremendously pleased with. I might post a pic later if I remember.

MrsS - that would be completely brilliant re the microwave if it works - but you don't need to bring it over, I could collect as I am not far from you most mornings as dd and ds2 are still at school not too far from your gaff, I think. I live a bit beyond the bottom end of the 159 route, so it would be a bit of a schlepp with an oven in your arms! Although you are v welcome to come to the wilds of Streatham for coffee one morning anyway - maybe MI could join us.

Alto - sorry about your dd's friendship trials, I remember all that and agree would not go back to being 14 for all the tea in china. Ds1 is also having friend ishoos insofar as one of the friends he made in Y7 (he's Y8 now) has turned out to be a bit of a PITA - copying ds1's work, rubbing the other kids in the class up the wrong way, complaining endlessly about everything. So ds1 is not keen to remain close and wants to gently extract himself from the friendship, but that's hard for anyone at any age, let alone for a 12yr old boy with not the best level of social confidence. He was in tears about it at the weekend Sad.

motherinferior · 12/09/2013 10:53

Oh Wilbur Sad Shall I bring over DD1 to cheer him up, which I seem to remember had an enlivening effect on him before?

herbaceous · 12/09/2013 11:05

I do take a lot of stuff to charity too, or freecycle it, but I'm need of cash ATM.

Stropperella · 12/09/2013 11:39

Moi aussi, Herbs, moi aussi.

Wilbur, sorry to hear about your ds (and alto re: your dd). Gawd, the trials of "friends"..

Am Envy of yous London Crepeys hanging out and doing coffee and microwave re-homing. I have to content myself with talking to my chickens.

QueenQueenie · 12/09/2013 11:43

But I'm jealous of your bucolic chicken keeping lifestyle Stropps! No chickens here, only numerous hardcore urban foxes who are completely fearless and terrorise the neighbourhood.

OP posts:
wilbur · 12/09/2013 12:20

If it makes you feel better QQ, I passed a dead urban fox (bleeuuurgh) on my way to work this morning. It was on the footpath from my house to the Common - if it had died 18 inches further down the path, it would have straddled the border between Croydon and Lambeth. It would have been like a wildlife epsiode of The Bridge.

MI - ha yes! It would be lovely to get them together, although he might now just fall apart at her beauty. Or attempt to woo her with a lego creation. Or a wand - he's been making a lot of wands. Would she like a wand?

Herbs - I have a bunch of stuff to ebay at the moment, need to get my act in gear. It's always nice to have some extra cash in the run up to Xmas.

I envy Stropps' chickens too - how is Esmerelda?

motherinferior · 12/09/2013 12:34

We just have enormous, semi-disembowelled huge rats, left outside our door courtesy of the Inferiorfelines.

I am sure DD1 would look benevolently on DS's wand, Wilbur (snigger). I do envy DD1. I was a podgy morass of insecurities by 12, whereas she still appears to be resisting the horror of self-doubt and misery that no doubt will engulf her the day she turns 13.

bigTillyMint · 12/09/2013 13:11

So glad I don't have petsWink

Sorry to hear of friendship woes - it's not easy going to school.

In S&B news, DD has commandeered DH's old jacket (only 6 sizes too big!) which she proclaims looks like a Harrington - who knew they were back in fashion?Confused

hattymattie · 12/09/2013 14:30

Ha MI - that just reminded me I saw a live rat trotting through the garden yesterday bold as brass. That's all I need. Have anxiously walked around the outside of the house looking for rat holes but we seem secure. Maybe I should get a cat!

Builders have vanished into outerspace - I think they're waiting for a run of sunny days so they can replace the wood - we could have a long wait.

Blackduck · 12/09/2013 19:15

Mum looks good, all pleased with her. Might have another little poke around on Monday (not entirely sure why) discharged Tuesday.

I sat through a presentation by a big honcho from Capita - I refrained from asking how come a. They screw a lot of things up b. it always costs more than they originally quote.

Am knackered - need a glass of wine and bed - missing dp and ds AND the hound...,,

hattymattie · 12/09/2013 19:26

Glad your mother is improving BD. May join you in a glass of wine.

herbaceous · 12/09/2013 19:52

Had wine last night. Really shouldn't tonight, especially as DP is out and it would be mildly tragic.

I have an S&B quand. Joining my besties for a meal at l'Anima tomorrow night. Moderately posh, but the main anxiety is that people will be dressed in clothes of less than five years vintage, and not from Sainsbury's. What do people wear in the City these days after hours?

herbaceous · 12/09/2013 19:55

Bugger me. Just seen the prices. I'll need to sell what's left of my wardrobe to pay for this. Although as it's our 10-year anniversary next week, I'm hoping that DP will foot the bill. We can have beans on toast on the actual day!

bigTillyMint · 12/09/2013 20:01

Great news, BDSmile

We are waiting for the hotwater/heating man from NPower. The heating is turned off, the thermostat at zero, but the radiators are hotConfused

Herbs, I'm sure you've got another spiffing Sainsbo's outfit up your sleeveWink

herbaceous · 12/09/2013 20:13

I do have a mock wrap dress that TWO gay men thought was a DVF. That may have to do. Or I could nip there tomorrow for something new...

Cremolafoam · 12/09/2013 21:33

Good to hear your mums doing ok bd. courage.

Stropperella · 12/09/2013 21:40

BD, lovely to hear the good news about your mum.

Wilbur, Esmeralda is doing very well, thanks for asking Grin

Autumn Term At Crepey Towers
Stropperella · 12/09/2013 21:43

(She's the dark brown one with white spots)

CointreauVersial · 12/09/2013 22:45

Jeez, just seen the weather forecast for the weekend. The word "gales" was used. Shock

A busy day at Chateau Cointreau, with no fewer than five tradesmen doing their stuff while i made a stab at "working from home"; I now have:

  • A downstairs loo light which works every time you switch it on.
  • A heating controller that allows you to have heating and hot water at the same time.
  • Two gleaming new patio doors with glass you can see through (study and living room)
  • An empty biscuit tin and a headache.

On the subject of getting rid of excess/unwanted possessions, I have three words:

26 foot loft.

Enough said.......

bigTillyMint · 13/09/2013 06:38

CVEnvy
(thought you were the ebay queen?!)

N Power man never turned up last nightAngry DH gave them what for and we are again waiting for a call today. Still, at least he can't complain about me turning the heating on as it is coming on itself despite being turned off and thermostat on zeroConfused

Stropps, I can just about cope with your chooks on a photo!
