My girlfriend told me today that she and her family are going on a 2 wk holiday, taking hand luggage only!!! Shock how is this possible? 20kg I can do but hand luggage?

libertychick · 09/08/2013 21:55

Here, here and here for examples of how to do hand luggage only Dry Smile

QueenCadbury · 09/08/2013 21:57

Difficult one shop. Could dh have a quiet word with him about how you feel or would that really set him back?

Just caught up on links. Nice cape anni. I own a cath kidston carry all bag. Don't use it so much now the dc are bigger but it's great that it's easy wipe clean and I don't care how trashed it gets.

shopafrolic · 09/08/2013 21:58

DH and FIL don't get on - just adds to the fun!

santamarianovella · 09/08/2013 21:59

dry i cant do it either, will they take 2 set of clothing and thats it? and some airlines are putting a lot of limitation on weight of hand luggage,i think lesser than maximum weight.

mignonette · 09/08/2013 22:33

Liberty we really liked Lanzarote. Don't know if you have been before but Papagayo beach is a must-really beautiful and great dirt track ride to it too. Also Teguise market, the North coast of the island- Famara and the Timanfaya national park with the volcano.

Hand luggage for two weeks? No way! How?

Dry A gentle comment about how it may affect you might be needed if it gets too much.I know it is hard to say sometimes though.

Am so pleased to hear that Donna Tartt has a new book coming out in September. I love her.

Drywhiteplease · 09/08/2013 22:58

Mig think that's for shop........... Unless about luggage, hand luggage only would affect me very badly indeed and my comment would certainly not be gently!!Grin

Negroni · 10/08/2013 00:08

Thanks for the Havaianas recs, I have just ordered these

We are going on holiday in 2 weeks and I have no holiday wardrobe at all. Due to saving money (2009), moving house (2010), choosing to holiday in the UK (2011) and being too pregnant to travel in school hols (2012)... we have not been anywhere hot since 2008! I have no holiday wardrobe, barring shoes and bags so am really trying to think what I will need. We are heading to Majorca so should be hot but I am at a bit of loss re hot summer clothes - any suggestions welcome!

The weather has been so rubbish here (just mean the UK in general) that I managed to get through the last few summers wearing jeans or possibly the odd skirt and flip flops - until this year it just has not been that hot. Also need swimwear (one pieces) too so at some point in the next 2 weeks will have to do some serious serious shopping.

mignonette · 10/08/2013 00:31

Apologies I meant that for Shop and luggage comment for Dry...Smile

Negroni - the sales are your friend and Debenhams had some lovely summery dresses in their Betty Jackson and John Rocha ranges a few days ago. They also have great swimwear at good prices-if you like retro style the Frost French bikinis and one pieces are reduced I believe.

I try to ensure everything goes with at least 60% of other items and tend to pack mainly light skirts, tops including T shirts, Bandeaus, cool cotton shirts with short sleeves and shorts (3 pairs) to go with them too. A couple of pairs of cigarette pants/Capri's for sight seeing, a good evening dressy dress, some scarves/shawl, hat and beach shoe, sightseeing shoe, evening shoe. Any extra room goes on shoes!

Whilst in Majorca look out for the traditional Majorcan [[http://varca.com/home.asp?gclid=CJy-07PA8bgCFcLHtAodbR8AbA Varca] sandal. They are lovely. If you also pack a couple of dressy tops then you can always add a pair of pants and evening shoe plus shawl for colder nights and you are good to go.

Oh and a good bright lipstick in a holiday shade. Or add evening tops to a skirt. I think this top would look good for an evening meal or this one with either pants or a pencil skirt/full skirt.

I like this dress and I took this bustier top on my holiday. It worked with everything dressed up and down. Maybe if you like it you could look for similar tops?

Dresses like these can do daytime with flats and at night add some bright jewellery like big gold hoops or chandeliers (very in), some strappy sandals and bright pink or red lipstick and you'll look fabulous. They are very much in the sales at the mokent. I have seen plenty in plain or patterns.

What kind do you like Negroni?

QueenCadbury · 10/08/2013 06:34

negroni you probably don't need too much as you say it will be hot. A few vests and shorts would be fine in the day and then I like to dress up in the evening although going anywhere nice is limited with small dc! Take some hand wash liquid and you can rinse things out easily as they dry so quickly.

We have the same Havs Neroni they're great

OneLittleLady · 10/08/2013 09:09

I finally return! Had no internet for days. It's be awful, I don't know how I've survived!

Negroni · 10/08/2013 09:18

Thank you, those are brilliant suggestions. Will definitely get a summer dress- love the linked one too. Love the Next Tankini and the Boden stripey swimsuit though will need to try on as am big of bust.

Where do you all get your non maxi skirts from? And what material are they? I know, sounds like I have just landed from Mars Apart from work clothes and a couple of going out embroidered/silk pencil skirts all I have in wardrobe are denim/ narrow cord skirts.

mignonette · 10/08/2013 09:45

One I wondered what had happened to you! Good Morning. Very overcast here today so no hurry to dress and start the day. Was up until nearly 3 a.m last night listening to all the wonderful tracks suggested on the 'hairs on the back of the neck' music thread. DH came staggering in late and proceeded to drunkenly provide me with a blow by blow account of his night including details of conversations that made absolutely no sense in the retelling.

Am going to look for more coats for you One if you still want me too. Not that many in store last weekend. I did see a lovely red one by Massimo Dutti in Harpers Bazaar magazine and have found it here and this cream one is so understated and elegant. Another lovely one is this navy version.

Some of my other picks- dress

Front flounce dress

3/4 sleeve cotton and cashmere dress for only £54, bargain for the quality;

Double lapel silk shirt

silk halter top which would make a lovely holiday evening top Negroni

Back pleat sweater

Black waxed skinnies

silk and cashmere pleated pants. These again would make beautiful evening/holiday evening pants.

Masculine grey suit style pants

suede ankle boot

Embossed leather snake ballerina

Cutwork leather shopper bag

Cowhide pochette - tempted by this.

Combination fake fur/leather belt- I'm going to order this;

Sewed leather and chain bracelet

Sale T shirt with silk yoke here

Straight leg pants on sale for only £14,95

I am pretty impressed with this collection. Versatile and 'clean' looking with no fussy detail, it all looks far more costly than it actually is.

mignonette · 10/08/2013 10:15

Negroni Are you after some light Summer skirts that are just standard A line or gathered? I find Debenhams are selling off a lot of summer styles now and as long as you do not mind rummaging, they have good ones in their Principles range (fairly classic styles such as striped, linen etc), the Red Herring label does more Fashion forward as does Their Henry Holland label here. Mantaray does lots of surf-y type prints and styles including some sweet little pull on cotton jersey skirts-

principles

Jasper Conran skirt

Kaliko

Oasis stripe

Pink or grey pleat

Check mini kilt

Lipsy pink tube

Striped tube

Alexander Wang ruched mini

Pale blue Cacharel cotton skirt that is perfect for summer holidays;

Tory Burch white white linen

Amazing See By Chloe ruched crepe de chine evening skirt

Adore this Vanessa Bruno;

Marant stretch cord

Helmut Lang printed [[

Wang stretch tuxedo skirt

Elisabeth & James plaid

Marni panelled

Suno Dior look a like bell skirt

Preen print

Marni Gatsby style panelled

Preen print satin bell shape

Guess that's enough! These are my favourites.

OneLittleLady · 10/08/2013 10:16

Oh, yes please mig search away. It's also very overcast here but we are having a BBQ later on so much prep work to be done! Think I'm just going to go in my navy skinnies, grey vest and mint green t-shirt jumper. Will have my hoodie on stand by for if it gets cold

foxysocks · 10/08/2013 10:31

mig you are so good at shopping. I love lots of those things, esp the plaid skirt and massimo dutti coated jeans. would you mind if I PMd you for some advice on something? from your posts I think you may be knowledgeable on the subject but I don't want it on board. x

foxysocks · 10/08/2013 10:33

it's weird weather here today and I don't know what we are doing yet. am wearing CE cargoes and a navy/white breton tee (velvet, from maze years ago) but i may change if we go out later.

DH leaves tomorrow at 9am for a week so I will need lots of lovely links and shopping distraction from the horrors of my children rotfl.

mignonette · 10/08/2013 10:34

Have decided to wear navy geometric print JCrew cigarette leg pants bought last Spring with grey sloppy Sweatshirt from New Look, a pale yellow Malene Birger Vest top underneath bought for £12 from Outnet a couple of years ago and my navy &Other Stories block heeled sandals. Is oddness, this weather. Have to go into town for contact lens assessment (keep fingers crossed for me everybody that I get the go ahead) and fruit and veg market shopping. Glamorous is my life!

I want to find some new shampoo and need a new gel/cream blusher. Thinking of those new Estee Lauder cheek stick things. Also may buy a chubby stick from Clinique if they have the right lip shade. I like very matte lip colours.

mignonette · 10/08/2013 10:34

Foxy of course that is fine. Pm away xx

QueenCadbury · 10/08/2013 11:28

Blindly mig you're amazing. Haven't got time right now to look at all the links as in the middle of baking/cooking. Just had my eyelashes tinted. They are very dark. I basically fell asleep whilst the tint was on so she left it on longer than usual. Hopefully it will last longer too.

trendy or frumpy?. To wear with dresses/skirts when I buy some! As you know I go for comfort when it comes to shoes but I am trying to get more into them. I do love a bit of black patent!

OP posts:
Annianni · 10/08/2013 11:38

The asos black suede ankle boots are here... The £20 ones.
And....

They're very nice.
They look way more expensive than £20.
They are very similar to the Sam Edelman petty boots.

They are a nice feeling suede, with elastic strips (sort of hidden) in the sides, so they're easy to put on.
There's a bit of a gap round the ankle, but not as flappy as some boots.

I've tried dsd's which are a UK7, and they fit me fine.
I'm a 6.5 usually.
If you are a proper 7, I'd say try an 8.

Dsd is a uk6 usually in converse etc, but she's tried asos boots before and needed a 7.

If they had any other colour than black, I'd order some.
