This is the only one I've found that doesn't look ridiculous, but I'm still not sure it's right. I think maybe pinks and purples look better on me, but I really want to be able to wear bright red!

Great tips littledragon! Will look out for a dark cherry red:)

MrsLettuce I've left the house wearing a finger dabbed layer of ruby woo..it works really well!

Yay! Go you Wink

It's the best-est red there is IMHO, I wear it most days. If I want it to last an age use mac lip primer, leave to go tacky, apply mac cherry lip liner all over, a layer of ruby woo with a lip brush, then blot and apply a layer from the tube.

MrsLettuce · 08/07/2013 11:39

the mac cherry liner is a perfect colour match for the ruby woo BTW, although not quite as matte. TBH on a day to day basis I generally just apply from the tube but it took a while to get the knack applying it perfectly in one go, IIRC at first I'd do a layer and then add the liner to neaten.

OK now I'm struggling to resist temptation to go past the Mac counter on my way to work :) I do need a lip brush to be fair, ruby woo is a pita to apply from the tube, that's partly why I gave up on it I think.

Keztral- are you wearing foundation in your photo?

Report
Keztrel · 08/07/2013 11:49

No practicality, just Mac blot powder in medium. Why? I have a few foundation recommedations if you're after one for v pale pink people :) I only wear it when I'm having a bad skin day.

mrsletteuce that is a fab tip. I applied my bright red with fingertips today and it looked ok-red but not in your face red. keztrel I have the HOC 499 one and like you trying to be brave about wearing it.

Ruby woo is very drying, so make sure you have a good lip balm.

I would use a darker red, not as pink, but not necessarily with very warm undertones.
I have MAC Absolute Power, which is very similar to Ruby woo, but not as drying. It goes on very blue-toned, and when it wears off, it becomes almost pink, similar to the colour of the lipstick on your picture.

I'd go for something closer to Chanel Rouge Allure Laque Dragon (discontinued, but there are dupes) or Clinique long last lipstick in Party Red.

Alternatively, it might be worth having a look at the red lipstick video Lisa Eldridge has done. She goes through a lot of lipsticks and gives advice on application.

Vibbe Absolute Power looks lovely.

Funnily enough I just googled black eyeliner, red lipstick, because I can't cope with not wearing eyeliner (I know a lot of advice says stick to just a bit of mascara if you have red lips), and a picture of Anne Hathaway came up - I love the red she's wearing. Also love this look - the eyes are simple but still with a good amount of black eyeliner...

I read somewhere recently that a study showed that female faces with strong eyebrows and red lipstick were consistently picked as younger and more attractive than thin eyebrows and other coloured lips. Can't find a link.

Have never plucked my eyebrows much and have definitely started wearing my red lippy more!

BTW, OP, you look lovely. Try the red lipstck!

I don't think there's a problem with the Anne Hathaway look - it's more if you have Kim Kardashian smoky eye make up and red lips for day wear. It'll just be a bit too much...

I'm not so keen on liquid eyeliner on myself, so instead I do push eyeliner, which is basically just pushing a dark shadow into/close to the eyelashes. It's much softer and IMO more of a daily make up look.

Btw, Absolute Power (and other red MAC lipsticks) stain like mad. I tried a couple on my hand earlier today, and even after washing my hands several times, using heavy duty make up remover and rubbing well, I still have the stains from MAC's products. Lipsticks from other brands came off no problem.

Oh I haven't found that with Ruby Woo Vibbe, my hand was covered in it earlier and it came off fine. Don't have any other Mac reds though. Yet!

Queen I think 499 was one of the ones HoC recommended for me too - its a great colour. But I found all the HoC lipsticks did that annoying thing of turning fuchsia round the edges after a few mins of wear. Don't know if anyone else gets this but certain brands do that on me.

keztrel it kind of does that with me too. I just assumed it was normal Confused. My bright pinkis a HOC one too. May have to go and try ruby woo but I also want plumful in your recommendation. I went to try it on Saturday and liked it but it was so hot and busy that I couldn't't be bothered to wait to buy it. I also have kate moss for rimmel which has been recommended a lot no here but not sure if it's too brown for a winter.

Report
QueenCadbury · 08/07/2013 20:01

I've just tried the rimmel one again with the fingertip application and actually it looks much better and less brown that when I've applied from the tube or brush.

I know someone said to go natural with the eyes but whenever I've played around with red lips I always need some kind of eye makeup even if just eyeliner to balance it out. But maybe that 's just me?

I do lightly winged eyeliner and lashes of mascara, maybe a neutral eyeshadow. Top lid only.

Mascara on the bottom lashes is OK if that;s what you're used to but certainly no liner, maybe a teeny weeny bit of shadow. No colour in any case.

Yep I reckon what mrslettuce says looks great, unless you have the kind of eyes that look good without makeup. Mine look a bit undone somehow with just mascara, but it could be all in my head of course!

Queen I think ruby woo is a lighter, brighter red than the 499 - I want a deep cherry like the 499, but which doesn't turn fuchsia.

Absolute Power looks quite close to 499 in pictures actually, but I bet chanel have a lot of options too...
