Shiny new thread for some shiny new perfumes (and classics and niche brands)

OP posts:

Which is the website that tells you if you like x perfume then you will probably like Y as well?

I was squirted with something by Burberry in John Lewis. Smells like any other chain store perfume to me.

florascotia · 09/11/2013 20:44

Mrs S - am not sure of the site you mention, but you could do a lot worse than consulting:
www.fragrantica.com
and www.basenotes.net
or boisdejasmin.com/]
or even yesterdaysperfume.typepad.com/

I HOPE these links work...

MrsCocoa · 09/11/2013 23:25

Mrs S

scentmap.com/? Pretty mainstream though. Frugal provided a link to an Australian site a page or two back which is more broadly based and interesting.

FrugalFashionista · 10/11/2013 12:17

MrsS, today's scent is the hyper-sweet Burberry Woman that predates my perfumista days. All the class and sophistication of canned peaches Wink This smells like Britney Spears or Jessica Simpson for sure...

Winter has officially started, and Italians are making appropriate perfume choices. I smelled a yummy cinnamony oriental that I couldn't place on someone at the supermarket. Bring on the spiciest perfumes and thickest ambers! Fuckit your AP is a gem!

Bewley I wouldn't mind some old-school Old Spice Wink

MrsCooper AGs at TJ Maxx = bliss! Enjoy!

MrsC, does that site actually work? It's a great idea snd I've tried to feed in Chanel No 19 EdP a few times, but each time the site crashes. Would love to find great complex green mainstream suggestions (Un Jardin sur les toits?).

Is HarumScarum still among us?

CointreauVersial · 10/11/2013 13:22

FF - I have a soft spot for Burberry Woman and have the remains of a FB lurking in my dressing table. I tend to wear it on cold days, as I find it quite warming and softly spicy.

I'm in full vanilla mode at the moment - Let Senteurs Gourmands Vanilla Bourbon. DH says vanilla is one of his favourite fragrance notes on me. I have another LSG vanilla which is much darker and richer, but the name escapes me....

coffeeinbed · 10/11/2013 13:53

Talk about sweet - I once had one of these French vanilla-y ones, in the metal bottle, Compagnie des Something or the other, forget the name and don't have the bottle anymore.
Now that was sweet vanilla to end all sweet vanillas.

Sticking to ISM these days.

coffeeinbed · 10/11/2013 13:54

Comptoir Sud Pacifique.
That was the one.

Fuckitthatlldo · 10/11/2013 14:47

Cointreau I was wondering about those Les Senteurs Gourmands. I've seen them in M+S and have had a faint sniff at the bottles but haven't actually tried them. What are they like on?

MrsCocoa · 10/11/2013 15:17

Mrs S

It doesn't seem to like No.19 EDP for some reason.

For no.19 EDP Poudre it threw out:

Infusion D'Iris
Violet Blonde
Florabotanica
Cristalle
Chloe

Bit random? In particular not sure I get what the TF is doing in there?

For pure (herby) green quite like Guerlain Aqua Allegoria Herba Fresca.

FrugalFashionista · 10/11/2013 16:02

Coffee I've tried the CSP vanilla and yes that is probably the ultimate vanilla, so strong I couldn't think straight while it was wearing me. I have a perverse wish to try it again...

CV, this is actually my 2nd bottle of Burberry Woman Blush Those days, I didn't really know perfumes or my personal taste. Turns out I don't really like fruity perfumes. There are some exceptions, of course.

FrugalFashionista · 10/11/2013 16:36

It's funny that Chanel 19 crashes the application... I played with it a bit. The given choices are on the dull side, the most adventurous pick I got out of it was Arpege.

Building a perfume-picking program can be really tricky. I tried this one, it looks promising, and I tried to pick a perfume for myself.

According to the program, I should wear floral perfumes.

"The best scent for this romantic, sensitive and sweet personality would be a bouquet of complementary florals, sure to woo even the most fickle of noses. Look for familiar notes like magnolia, jasmine, rose and lily. For the more fresh-minded, keep it light with a hint of lavender or a fresh, herbal top note. For those with a hidden sultry side, pick up a fragrance with a bottom note of amber, wood, musk or vanilla.

Apparently, I should wear Dior J'Adore and YSL Parisienne. Err, no.
Does anyone else get results that make more sense?

FrugalFashionista · 10/11/2013 16:47

I retried the quiz, everything else stayed the same but I changed my gender. Now I'm 'Woodsy' and should wear the two best woody perfumes known to man, Burberry The Beat for Men and 212 for Men.
Right

FrugalFashionista · 10/11/2013 17:08

Sorry about spamming the thread, finally I was able to find a quiz that correctly identified me as a fan of orientals, matching me with Poison and Obsession

Not for the timid...

OneLittleLady · 10/11/2013 17:49

I got matched with orientals as well FF interesting as they are usually what I choose, that and very floral scents, especially anything rose based

MrsCocoa · 10/11/2013 18:51

Frugal - at least it's consistent. I came out as florals too!
News to me....

coffeeinbed · 10/11/2013 19:58

That was it, I was floating on it.
A big cloud of sweet vanilla.

goodasitgets · 10/11/2013 20:13

Has anyone smelt any of the byredo fragrances?

coffeeinbed · 10/11/2013 20:38

Just Black Tulip, which was more of a light pink freesia, tbh.
There's so many of them I get overwhelmed and flee to something more manageable, like the Le Labo counter in Liberty.
I'm a wuss confronted with big perfume lines.

FrugalFashionista · 10/11/2013 20:55

I love a few Byredos, Pulp and Rose Noir. M/Mink is interesting too if someone likes conceptual perfumes. Some Byredos are a bit meh, but they are definitely worth sampling. Alla Violetta is a good source for samples and full bottles. Oh, and the FB packaging is to die for - you really get your money's worth.

goodasitgets · 10/11/2013 21:00

I'm just starting to try not mainstream perfume. Although my bottle of Maison Martin Margiela Replica - Lazy Sunday Morning is on it's way so I shouldn't really purchase anything else!
Have bought this and never smelt it Shock as it was a bargain

coffeeinbed · 10/11/2013 21:09

Just stay away from Martin Margiela A walk on the beach.
Aquatic mellon.
You have been warned.

goodasitgets · 10/11/2013 21:17

Yes I hated that Grin
I loved untitled l'eau, and the description of lazy Sunday morning appealed
Am quite fussy, HATE jasmine (especially combined with ylang ylang) bleugh
Love lemon, lime, patchouli, vetiver, blue camomile

FrugalFashionista · 11/11/2013 09:18

Good Untitled is great! If you like modern minimalistic perfumes, you might want to sample a few instore or by ordering them home. A few suggestions: Lalique's Encre Noire (the masculine version is a great vetiver, the feminine is vile), Sycomore from the Chanel boutique line, Patchouli Patch, Timbuktu and Dzongkha from L'Artisan, the Hermes Jardins series (nearly everywhere, easy to sample instore, you might like Nil and Mediterranee), citrussy Goutals and Hermessences (Hermes boutiques - the salesladies are usually very helpful and I've often received free samples). Some sightly more exotic lines could be Eau d'Italie, Odin New York, and why not Byredo (try the more masculine sounding ones as they also have quite a few insipid florals). Some of the classic masculines might also work on you.

If anyone else is new to niche perfumes, Annick Goutal, Diptyque, L'Artisan, Hermessences and the Chanel boutique line (including Coromandel and Cuir de Russie) and Tauers are great places to start. When you have sniffed around a bit you'll have a clearer idea what you like - unisex woody, modern and translucent, witty and quirky, opulent oriental, formal and classic...

November is the perfect time to wear Coco. The EdP feels too heavy and pungent any other time of the year (that's why I try to get half-sprays). But I was caught in a rainshower and feel chilled to the bone, so the smoldering spice and heavy sillage feel perfect right now.

goodasitgets · 11/11/2013 12:50

I smelt an AG perfume in TK Maxx that I nearly bought but I can't remember which one it was Sad
I know it was a yellow box and like a see through yellowy bottle!

CointreauVersial · 11/11/2013 13:06

Fuckit - Les Senteurs Gourmands are all largely vanilla-based, but very nice. Decent sillage and staying power, and cheap enough for everyday. I have a 4x15ml (I think....) pack; the nicest are the Figue Sauvage and the grapefruit one, neither of which are too sweet.

The only Comptoir Sud Pacifique fragrance I've tried is Coco Figue, which I picked up for a bargain £10 in M&S over the summer. It was my holiday fragrance - even though there was precious little sun in Cornwall I could still dream of tropical beaches!
