Do you prefer skirts or pants?

Browsing most threads, there seems to be a lot of emphasis upon jeans and pants as opposed to skirts and dresses (dresses mostly discussed for special occasions, etc). There are a lot less skirts available to buy in stores, too, compared to jeans and pants.

What do you prefer?
I think I am most comfortable in skirts and dresses, but often gravitate to jeans because of the damn weather. I think that I suit dresses and skirts more, but often wonder if I look too dressy......and then there's the problem of bare legs or tights!

Jeans definitely seem more popular online, judging by inspiration posts at pinterest and tumblr......do you think skirts have had their day?

I much prefer trousers (I still regard pants as a term for underwear - probably my age). I don't actually own a skirt.

Trill · 13/05/2013 16:27

I prefer to wear skirts and pants, thanks :o

bollockstoit · 13/05/2013 16:28

I like both equally. The weather at the moment is making me wear mainly jeans though. I call trousers pants too (am northern).

OneLittleLady · 13/05/2013 16:29

I prefer skirts and dresses, I find them much more comfortable but have a lot of jeans because of the unpredictable weather. I would say I wear skirts and dresses more often though and I feel like they suit my figure better than trousers do. Plus, I find it easier to find skirts and dresses to fit me, being both very short and quite 'wide'

MrsLettuce · 13/05/2013 16:44

I've given up trousers and it's been a real relief and I look better too.

ToastedTeacakes · 13/05/2013 16:45

Haha, yes i meant trousers not knickers!

I think skirts are possibly the easiest to shop for, sizing wise, whilst dresses and jeans can be a nightmare.

Whilst there's nothing technically 'wrong' with my arse, I don't particularly like showing it so slim fit jeans bother me, even though I wear them a lot (blasted weather). I tend to wear long cardi's or jackets with them.

Skirts do seem to have lost favour except for work wear. Pity cos I prefer them most of all. Been searching for navy or white full skirts (knee length) for ages and can't find any that I like. There's like this dearth of skirts for the under 60's, i fear.

I never wear skirts or dresses.

I've noticed that at work (officey, corporatey environment) most women are wearing skirts and dresses. I think you're right about casual wear, though, and more people wear jeans and trousers then.

Lucylloyd13 · 14/05/2013 14:06

Trousers have obvious practical advantages in some situations, but I still love wearing skirts, and dresses where the opportunity exists.

Trousers are so often the easy/lazy option.

Pants? are always only of the bikini/ boy short/ lacy/ hoi leg variety

ToastedTeacakes · 14/05/2013 17:00

Will pantaloons do?? Grin

OP posts:
Bunbaker · 14/05/2013 17:12

It depends what I want to wear on my feet. I like both, and always wear pants under my clothes Grin

hugoagogo · 14/05/2013 17:17

I never wear skirts or dresses.

They don't suit me and I really feel the cold.

In fact I am quite surprised anyone wears them; If you are hot or have nice legs that you want to show off, surely shorts are better-more practical?

CMOTDibbler · 14/05/2013 17:18

I wear lots of casual skirts - today its an above knee, slightly a line Oasis denim skirt. My problem is being a vv reluctant ironer, many skirts need an iron so live in the ironing pile

MadBusLady · 14/05/2013 17:20

I know skirts suit me way better than trousers but I can't seem to kick my jeans habit. They're just so warm and comfy.

iMe · 14/05/2013 22:17

I've always been a skirt girl. beginning to get more into dresses now. too self conscious about my bum and tum in trews. I do wear trousers for gardening, long walks or sport etc but feel happier and more myself in skirts and dresses.

iMe · 14/05/2013 22:19

PS Those of uou who feel the cold in skirts need to become acquainted with thermal tights. Smile

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 14/05/2013 22:21

Jeans here, just so comfy and practical. I wear dresses sometimes in summer, and skirts occasionally in winter, but jeans are such an easy option that I always go back to them (everyone wears them where I work).

OnTheNingNangNong · 14/05/2013 22:25

I prefer skirts as I can't find Trousers to properly fit my waist and hips. I don't look like a parsnip is skirts either. I do own a few pairs of jeans for playgroup or helping out attthe school.

I also want skirts to be slightly longer than a belt, even over tights some skirts are obscenely short

YoniOno · 14/05/2013 22:37

It comes down to the tights issue I think, in the British climate. I live in dresses in winter, with opaque black tights and boots. But summer comes and it's jeans/trousers/crops with sandals/ballerinas/flip flops.

I have a lovely new midi dress but it would look beyond ridiculous with black tights so am waiting for seriously hot weather... I may be waiting a while.

Seriously - Americans don't do black opaques like we do. They look heavy and scruffy once it's sunny. But too cold to go without. So warmer yet summerier to go with troos.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 14/05/2013 22:42

It certainly comes down to tights for me, I hate them and don't like baring my legs either, so prefer trousers/jeans all year round. It also comes down to feet, I have wide feet and a bad back which necessitates flat supportive shoes 99% of the time, that combined with sturdy calves mean trousers are a far better option.

Bunbaker · 15/05/2013 06:47

"In fact I am quite surprised anyone wears them; If you are hot or have nice legs that you want to show off, surely shorts are better-more practical?"

At 54 I no longer have legs that look good in shorts Sad

Trill · 15/05/2013 08:13

I don't really understand the point in the OP because I see loads of dresses in the shops, including casual ones.

magso · 15/05/2013 09:02

I rarely wear traditional skirts,-slim or flouncy hemmed shorter styles suit me but they ride up when you sit down, and look lumpy if the top needs tucking in. I do not look good in longer below knee skirts (am too short) but like you Bunbaker do not have the legs to show off anymore. I usually wear dresses to work - with a top underneath for winter and opaques. At home I prefer jeans or if warm a dress.
Having thought about it I used to wear skirts more (10 years back perhaps - when jackets were worn more) but I suspect fashion particularly in the work place has changed. Perhaps the addition of lycra in the last decade to jeans has made them comfortable as well as practical now and changed what we wear.
