I think the black ones are too evening wear. The cream and black one looks a bit odd. It looks out of proportion. It is also very 'look at me' so prob ok if you can carry it off. I preferred Mrs Lettuce's one.

Am I detecting a desire to really stand out and attract attention at this event? Will there be someone there you want to show what they're missing? These things tend to backfire.

If you are determined to wear black, I would look at the prom dresses in River Island sale. But I am hopeless at this sort of thing. Only came on because I have a wedding next weekend and not got a clue what to wear!

ok, basic rules for formal weddings - no white, cream, black or red. (black meaning it looks like you aren't happy for the couple, white/cream are trying to compete with the bride, red was traditionally the colour of the groom's mistress) Also never look like you are trying to look like one of the wedding party unless you are part of the wedding party.

Is this a wedding when you will need to change for the evening reception or is it a whole day event? It's not normal to change for the evening anymore.

What's your budget? Basically, you need to look nice, formal but not like you are trying to pull or are a bridesmaid.

A few other people have said they are changing, so I just thought I would too. Didn't know that about red!!

I just don't want to look like I haven't made any effort. I know a lot of the guests are quite try hard, really into their fashion etc and I don't want to look like I've thrown any old rags on IYSWIM.

Plus I thought white, cream, black etc were OK as long as it wasn't solidly that colour and was mixed with either another colour on the dress or colourful shoes, bag, accessories?

I don't really have a budget in mind tbh. Probably wouldn't spend more than £100 on each dress though.

White, cream black and even a little red ok on the dress mixed with other colours, but a red dress, a mainly black dress (even if mixed with other coloured accessories) is not.
