shop no idea what the consumer rights are but how did she post it? If registered/recorded then she should be able to take it up with the post office?

santamarianovella · 01/05/2013 21:44

hopefully,as queen said go to JL with the varnish on. i think that kimono can be duplicated ,it looks nice with hot pants!
dec I agree with you,I'm a SAHM,and like to spend more on the things I wear at a daily basis.
I don't know about that shop, but it seems tricky.and they always claim not holding responsibility if goods gets lost.

Drywhiteplease · 01/05/2013 21:51

liberty the Coast dress has gone back, DH thanks you, it was the right thing to do Sad....I agree about the fortunes we spend on one occasion....I'm feeling v sensible.

Remembered, I need to add " I do not camp" to my personal ad.

shopafrolic · 01/05/2013 22:12

Apparently she sent it back first class so I think she's fighting a losing battle with them. They'll say it's Royal Mail's fault and RM will say she should have sent it insured. The joys of internet shopping!

libertychick · 01/05/2013 22:51

Shop she needs to read UK Post Scheme which is the 'contract' with RM when you use them. Section 16 covers compensation and for items posted first class they will compensate cost of postage and up to £50 value of an item if it can be proved that the damage/loss was their fault.

Well done Drywhite but don't feel Sad - buy something lovely with the refund!

libertychick · 01/05/2013 23:03

Santa and Dec it's so interesting that you priortise your day to day stuff. The reason I raise the point is because with me I think the issue is about how I value myself - I will spend on an 'occasion' outfit because I can justify that it's appropriate to do so, looking good at a wedding is a compliment to the couple etc etc while spending a lot on things just for me seems somehow wrong. It's completely daft but it is very deep rooted and I do struggle with it.

For example I spent weeks debating buying the Whistles Lena jacket as it felt like too much to spend on a jersey jacket. But it's a great buy, I am wearing it at least twice a week both to work and at weekends and yet I still feel a niggling guilt about it.

And my DH is fully supportive of me buying decent stuff - he is always saying it drives him mad when I just seems to drag home bag after bag of tat and he likes seeing me buy nice things for myself (although he always adds anxiously that he expects me not to do with the same frequency!)

MacaYoniAndCheese · 02/05/2013 00:37

Oooh...me likely this thread Grin. I don't know who was talking about New Balance sneaks upthread, but I am obsessed with the retro ones. I had a navy pair in the fall and just got these today. So comfy and look rad with jeans. I love the look of Converse too, but they don't work on my feet Sad.

Also got this in Ocean Blue for the summer. DH is going to go spare but he'll come around eventually Wink. I think it will go with lots so it's quite sensible, yes?

J Crew t-shirts are my fave because they are long (very flattering). They wash and wear better than my Gap and Old Navy ones too...

libertychick · 02/05/2013 01:05

Welcome Maca I am guessing you are located stateside? There are several NB fans on here - at least 3 of us have purchased these babies. I'll have that bag in the Kelly Green, Navy and Raspberry please!! Looks like a very sensible purchase to me Smile

Have been working since 9pm apart from a couple of brief MN breaks - off to bed now - bloody early start tomorrow too - cannot wait for the BH weekend!

BrandyAlexander · 02/05/2013 05:44

Hello Maca, welcome. I love that bag!

Liberty, I know exactly what you mean. It's why I wear fine jewelry all the time as there is no point saving it for best. At this time in my life with two young dcs, dh and I go out once a week, usually to local theatre and dinner. We rarely go to formal things together unless its a special occasion, especially since almost all our friends are married. If I was waiting for an occasion to wear my nice stuff I would be wearing a long time! My job requires me to look super smart and put together and in the last 5 years of pregnancy, babies and breastfeeding, all my efforts have gone on work clothes. I have great wedding outfits, cocktail dresses and ball gowns from per dc life so for formal occasions I am covered. What this thread has inspired me to do (especially from the sahms) is to start looking at other areas of my life and wearing nice things outside of formal occasions. Eg without this thread I wouldn't have bought new bikinis for holiday or had fun with my jewelry.

Annianni · 02/05/2013 06:24

7fam on brand alley today, lots of jeans and denim shirts.

Hopefully · 02/05/2013 06:45

Liberty I get a lot of clients who have exactly that attitude, I think it's v common. One of my favourite things is seeing clients kind of give themselves permission to invest in themselves every day. I love my job Grin

Have to take my shoes to the cobbler today. The glamour. Ooh, and we are going out this evening for the first time in aaages. Meeting friends at local gastropub (and cycling there) so not exactly formal, but will be nice to go out in the evening with DH and make a bit of effort!

Decameron · 02/05/2013 07:41

Liberty, L'Oréal, lady, you're worth it! You will wear and wear the jacket/Me&Em dresses. A cheapie dress I bought last summer has just gone in the charity bag along with a couple of Gap t-shirts, yet I have jersey DKNY and Me & Em dresses from a couple of years ago that are perfect. Anyway, if you have the money, don't feel guilty. DH and I don't go out enough either so I have to dress for the school run (just joking but I am in jeans/ballet flats/Ash or jersey dresses in the summer so try to get what I love if possible).

Have fun tonight, Hopefully. I was trying to keep your voice in my mind when clearing out last night ... I am a bit of a hoarder.

I have a hole in the back of my new Whistles t-shirt, worn once. I still have the receipt, will try to exchange it.

Hi Maca, I'm guessing Canada. I have a Dooney & Bourke bag from years ago, great brand.

Going to check out the jeans now, thanks Anni.

DDs are awake, chat later.

santamarianovella · 02/05/2013 08:05

liberty you shouldnt feel this way about yourself.your worth it,and that dress you linked a while ago is gorgeous.

i hesitate alot when shopping for special occasions,i wouldnt want to spend a fortune on a dress i will wear once or twice, i had a hell of a time shopping for a dress that i will wear for a wedding,an anniversary and my 30th bday this summer.
but i wouldnt hesitate spending that money on a jacket or shoes that i will wear many times.one of my best everyday buys is a rick owens jacket, took me forever to save for it,and its totally worth every penny.
dec i totally get what your saying about putting an effort on everyday dressing.
hi maca you came to the right place, lots of NB fans in here.
love the sound of your evening hopefully

shopafrolic · 02/05/2013 08:07

Welcome Maca
Decam any slightly too large jeans being thrown out? You know where I am Wink. Bad news about the Whistles tee. I washed one of my seam back tees and then tumble dried it by mistake -
Liberty thanks for the postal advise - I'll pass the link on.
I couldn't agree more about spending for events etc. I had a wardobe full of evening wear, wedding outfits, going out clothes which were all lovely but not right for my new 'role'. This thread has really helped me to value myself more, that it's ok to make an effort day to day and to realise that a few quality items work much harder than bags of cheap and cheerful.
I ca't wait for my Me&Em delivery - you all seem to rate them so much....

30th santa? So young! Envy how will you celebrate?

OP posts:
Annianni · 02/05/2013 09:37

Welcome Maca :)

I know what you mean Liberty
I used to spend loads on clothes for going out in, that I'd only wear a few times.
But I felt bad buying expensive things for every day, especially now I'm at home.

But it's that old cost per wear thing.
And it is so worth it wearing nicer things day to day.

I've just looked at that Whistles scarf Sleep and it's lovely... but I couldn't pay that for a polyester scarf Shock

I'm waiting to try the grey and coral Maison Scotch and I might have accidentally ordered Foxy's scarf in grey... which I would wear far more times, than a coral one.

AmberNectarine · 02/05/2013 09:42

I am so the opposite of you liberty, I spent less than £200 on my wedding dress but £300 jeans? No problem. Me&Em dresses are brilliant - I've worn my two loads (one of which was hopefully's before it came to me) and they look brand new still.

AmberNectarine · 02/05/2013 09:43

Decam that has happened to me twice. They've exchanged without quibble both times.

Annianni · 02/05/2013 09:49

Shop your friend would have had the parcel weighed when she sent it.
Does she have a certificate of postage?

I think it is her fault (sorry) that she didn't send it insured. At the post office that I use, they always ask what the parcel is worth and then list what your options are, depending on how much it's worth.
And anything with that value is usually Special Delivery.

There used to be a parcel post, where you paid extra for insurance too, but not sure if they still do that.

I've spent loads sending things back to Donna Ida and Hush, which is annoying but not worth the risk.

She should be able to claim a certain amount back from RM though.
But she won't get the full amount.

shopafrolic · 02/05/2013 09:57

Thanks Anni I think you're right and in this instance she should have insured it.
I'm sat in the dentist's waiting room - scared!

probably by wailing shop (kidding).its in july,we will be on holiday,so a small celebration with DCS, DH,his parents and hopefully my parents.
i liked the idea of giving presents for each year.was itqueen who mentioned it?so i told dh that im expecting 30 presents Wink.

libertychick · 02/05/2013 10:04

Actually Amber my own wedding dress cost less than most of the outfits I bought for other people's weddings! £75 for a sample version of a dress that at full price was £1700 bought in the final half hour of a wedding fair at Earl's Court Grin. some adjustments cost a further £115 (cannot put a price against the extreme diet and exercise regime it took to get me into a sample size 10!!!) Shoes were silver flip flops from Barretts and pearly jewellery from Claires!

But you have all persuaded me I should buy the Me&Em dress - or should I wait a few more weeks for the sale???? Confused

Annianni · 02/05/2013 10:12

Just bloody buy it Liberty :o
Do it now!!!

If it's oos in your size, in the sale, you'll regret it.

Good luck Shop

I might win the wedding dress cost thingie, mine was £20 :o

AmberNectarine · 02/05/2013 10:13

I've just ordered the most euro trash handbag ever! Check it out!
