Calling all HOC winters.....

QueenCadbury · 21/04/2013 09:21

So, I had my colours done yesterday and I am now a sprinter winter. My best colours being royal blue, electric blue, damson, lagoon blue and light emerald.

Of course a shopping trip is now required Grin so I'm just after any inspiration by what you fellow winters have recently bought...

Shush. Don't tempt me. I promised DH I was done shopping for a/w. I just need a day dress (or two) and a skirt that will go with navy and burgundy and patterns (so not lacy).

aftermay · 13/09/2013 14:27

Talking of patterns, how are you doing? I've lost my confidence with them now and dress monochromatically (hm? YNWIM).

I haven't tried pine green. I have a number of lighter greens and it's official: they don't suit me.

QueenCadbury · 13/09/2013 14:33

I rarely do patterns. They're ok on a top but dresses especially flowers make me look like an overgrown toddler Grin. I tend to stick to plain stuff.

Patterns don't look good on me either. I do breton stripes in summer and have a navy dress with stone polka dots that suits me, but that's it. I think a lot of patterns give an overall blurred/muted effect that doesn't suit winters (I'm sure there are some that work, but I've never found them.)

The cobalt blue Hush snood arrived today. It matches the electric blue in my wallet exactly. The material is heavy and feels lovely. Only problem is it's massive!! Looks way bigger on me than on the model and totally overwhelms my small face. Am considering cutting it in half as the edges are raw anyway - then I'd have two reasonable sized snoods (could dye one?) OTOH if it doesn't work for some reason it would be ruined and I'd have lost £30....

KosherBacon · 13/09/2013 15:13

Kezztrel- sounds like it needs to go back. If it wasn't for the colour you would send it back.

Kezztrel · 13/09/2013 15:43

Kosher you're probably right. I will think about it. If it wasn't so massive it would be my perfect scarf. Seriously it is five feet long, wtf! It's just the right width for looping twice round the neck though, which most snoods aren't - they either leave a gap for you to freeze or you loop them three times and they strangle you. Or is that just me.

KosherBacon · 13/09/2013 15:58

I'm a snood virgin and have never even tried one on, never mind owned one!

I remembered my favourite red lipstick- Chanel Dragon lip laquer. Unfortunately it's now discontinued and I'm nearly out. Google image search it!

Kezztrel · 13/09/2013 17:02

Ok I chopped the snood in half and it's now perfect. Bit risky though. Need to be less impulsive and stop spending/chopping up money.

aftermay · 13/09/2013 17:55

Is half a snood going spare? Could match LCC's blue top :)

I've been looking online for lipsticks now and agonising between Ruby Woo and Russian Red. I might have to actually go in a shop. (Avoiding them ATM as I'm not working.)

I went for a job interview today and wore: grey skirt, black T-shirt and the blue Mango cardi on top with a thin grey belt over it (never ever tried this look before) and navy shoes and grey necklace. Very fuschia lipstick. I felt confident and I think I have got it!!

Kezztrel · 13/09/2013 18:01

A lot of people find ruby woo very drying and a PITA to apply aftermay, if that helps at all? Its a lot dryer and harder than the other Mac mattes.

I'm going to dye the other half of the snood black or navy.

aftermay · 13/09/2013 18:22

I'll go for RR lipstick and get it online.

Kez - you're v adventurous with dyeing things. I had a whole lot of clothes that I just took to a charity shop. I had a think whether to eBay or dye and then I realised I don't actually want to spend any more time on them.

All my patterned clothes are also in the wrong colours, quite washed out. So they are in the 'for around the house' drawer. I'm thinking though that my family deserve to see me at my best so I should just take the plunge and get rid.

LCHammer · 13/09/2013 18:35

Quick note to say I've NC as it's long after May. My new organised self starts now.

Loopytiles · 13/09/2013 21:11

www.johnlewis.com/jaeger-irregular-stripe-knit-dress-multi/p643387 Jaeger colbalt / orange stripe thin knit dress (£180! ) Out of budget!

LCHammer · 13/09/2013 22:27

Also, is orange or beige a good colour for you? I think it's too close to yellow.

KosherBacon · 13/09/2013 22:31

Orange and beige are terrible colours for me. Now I know why I'm a winter as they don't come anywhere in the palette. With the swatches white was good but off white was terrible, never mind beige.

Kezztrel · 13/09/2013 23:34

Orange and beige are awful on me. I knew that long before I had my colours done! We're meant to be able to do acid yellow aren't we? I can't imagine it looking good...

KosherBacon · 14/09/2013 07:27

Acid yellow was one of my worst colours along with half the ice colours.

Standingonlego · 14/09/2013 07:31

Been lurking on this thread for ages, just wanted to say thank you for all the ideas ! Assessed as a winter, classic gamine about 8 years ago (before DCs arrived). Top colour for me is turquoise/cyan..(not sure what official name of colour is)...shame it is our "corporate" brand signature colour so always feel a bit 'school uniform" if I wear at work....but always get compliments Blush when I do.

I am going to have colour/style day with a friend in a few week but it is the cool/warm/clear version so will report back and compare. Still trying to locate my swatch book....in one of those safe places :)

Great thread, lovely posters, and I have to hide my purse when clicking on links!

MadAboutHotChoc · 14/09/2013 08:07

My teenage DD who I suspect is another winter does acid yellow (in small amounts) really well. I can do acid yellow too but in tiny amounts and also I can wear patterns but these have to be fairly bold and geometric - florals are a big no no. I love breton style stripes too.

Standing - welcome Smile. Think cyan is chinese blue in HoC lingo - it's a fab colour isn't it.

MadAboutHotChoc · 14/09/2013 08:14

Have just done a search for neon yellow on pinterest - lots of interesting ideas of how to incorporate it in your outfit:

neon tshirt

light grey & neon

acid yellow as a pop of colour

Smile
Kezztrel · 14/09/2013 09:48

Hi standingonlego!

Mad the neon with light grey looks great! I seem to remember the acid yellow for me was one of those colours I'm allowed to wear on my feet only Grin

Kezztrel · 14/09/2013 09:58

re dying stuff LCH, I just love it, don't know why! Things always look so much newer and fresher afterwards. Right now I'm dying an ancient pair of light blue 7 for all mankind jeans that I got off ebay 10 years ago, hoping they'll turn out deep indigo and that I'll magically lose 5lbs so they fit.

MadAboutHotChoc · 14/09/2013 10:16

Any tips for dying stuff? I need to refresh a few items including my beloved indigo jeans.

Kezztrel · 14/09/2013 11:25

Mad use Dylon 'jeans blue' dye - comes out a very dark indigo, tis lovely. This one. Don't dye things that have polyester stitching, as it won't dye and will look terrible (tried it with peach cardi, had to chuck it). You'll get the best results with stuff made of cotton or viscose that can be washed in the machine at 40.

Kezztrel · 14/09/2013 11:26

I linked to the wrong dye, sorry!! I meant this one
