Calling all HOC winters.....

QueenCadbury · 21/04/2013 09:21

So, I had my colours done yesterday and I am now a sprinter winter. My best colours being royal blue, electric blue, damson, lagoon blue and light emerald.

Of course a shopping trip is now required Grin so I'm just after any inspiration by what you fellow winters have recently bought...

I'm on the Woolovers website and was wondering which of their colours are true winter shades? I'm not sure how true the colours are on the website.

aftermay · 01/09/2013 07:24

I don't know about the Woolovers as I'd never heard of it till a couple of days ago. I had a look and they seemed quite nice & well priced but I got confused with all the fabric composition and paralysed by all the choice.

KosherBacon · 01/09/2013 07:24

That's why I've started another thread about the choices!

aftermay · 01/09/2013 07:26

How have you all tackled your wardrobe? I've put in bags things that aren't my colours. Now what do I do with them? Do I take the plunge and take them to charity or should I keep them and try some on every now and again? (What if a few months down the line I decide this whole colour analysis business is a lot of bollocks and I shouldn't have thrown them away?)

QueenCadbury · 01/09/2013 07:37

aftermay can you dye any of it? I successfully dyed a couple of cardigans but you do need a good natural fibre content for the dye to take. I dyed something with some polyester in and it went all patchy. Otherwise I got rid of all my stuff. The god stuff I sold, some bits I gave to friends and the rest to charity but I knew i'dnever wear them again.

OP posts:
aftermay · 01/09/2013 07:53

QC - I'd never thought of dyeing them. I'll have a look and see how much I really like them.

Yesterday I wore a shortish navy corduroy skirt, navy camisole and grey jumper on top (knitted, with holes, so quite lightweight), with a chunky grey and silver necklace. Red lipstick. My DH really loved it. He said its the kind if thing I used to wear when we met. (But all my floaty greens and yellows...)

KosherBacon · 01/09/2013 09:01

Aftermay- I've sorted my wardrobe into keeping, eBay, charity shop and bin. To be honest the reason I hadn't colours done was I've put on weight post baby and the clothes that fit me were tatty and tired. I've thrown out lots (why do I never wear an apron when I cook- so much had grease stains). I was roughly ok with my colours and had lots of brights but some were warmer (teal, coral etc) but I'm not going to throw them all out if they are in decent condition, they can just be worn for work.

aftermay · 01/09/2013 14:15

I haven't done eBay in many years to either buy or sell. I think the DDs would love to help with this, might be a nice activity to do together and free!

aftermay · 01/09/2013 14:19

BTW I've bought the pink Hobbs coat linked on the other thread. I hope it's the right shade. My last wool winter coat was bought 8-10 years ago. Lots of flimsy fashion ones meanwhile.

Kezztrel · 01/09/2013 14:57

I kept a few things that weren't in my colours because I still like and wear them a lot, and still get compliments in them. I gave quite a few things to an autumn friend, as I think I was dressing more like an autumn before - lots of apple greens and teals. She gave me a raspberry cashmere cardi in return, bargain! The rest I ebayed and oxfammed. But I've done it v slowly over a year so I didn't end up with no clothes!

Mashedupbanana · 01/09/2013 20:36

I had a bit of a hair dye disaster - I'm blonde and went to the salon asking for an ash blonde (HOC woman advised it) and came out looking really terrible. I have had it changed and I definitely do need a warm tone through my hair. I'm so confused by it. Have any other winters found this?

aftermay · 01/09/2013 22:54

Sorry i can't advice, Mashedipbanana. I'm dark haired and the few occasions when I went blonde or had highlights I didn't look particularly well. For years I've wanted a vibrant red, tried at home, at hairdressers. It doesn't 'take' and I end up with a very mild version. I'm finally accepting I'm just dark haired and ill stick to this.

MadAboutHotChoc · 02/09/2013 07:32

Mashedup - I look best when I use a cool based brown dyes. Warm red tints makes me look awful and clashes with my make up and clothes.

I wonder why you thought the new dye looked awful - was it because it was such a change? or made you looked washed out?

MadAboutHotChoc · 02/09/2013 07:33

QueenCadbury · 02/09/2013 07:36

Can't advise mashed as I'm naturally blonde. My hair definitely looks better after being in the sun as it turns hits blonde. Are you a sprinter winter? If so you may have fairly neutral colouring so may need a neutral hair colour as opposed to properly cool iyswim.

Can we talk nails? I love AW nail colours and I'd love to know what your favourites are or what you're planning on purchasing. I want this one

QC - that's strong! I'd wear it, though. Would go with pretty much everything. I struggle to find nail polish that lasts on my nails, though. I wash my hands a lot (professionally rather than OCD) and I feel self-conscious if they aren't in top condition. I meant to try a bit more over the summer as I took a few weeks off but I forgot.

I have some of those OPI ones but they are quite light/thin. My longest lasting is Jack Wills nail polish, of all places.

MadAboutHotChoc · 02/09/2013 08:27

I have that purple but from Barry M (also have their navy and grey). All gorgeous colours. Currently wearing shocking pink nail polish as I am still in summer mode....

jennyjetson · 02/09/2013 09:09

Mashed - I have the same problem with hair colour. I should suit an ash blonde colour but I don't....it made my hair age and my skin go grey to match it. I soon reverted to a brighter blonde, more golden colour.

I have never thought that it could be a neutral blonde but now Cadbury has mentioned it, it has no warm tones in it and prob why it suits.

Kezztrel · 02/09/2013 12:51

Love that OPI purple Queen, am going to have to get it. Having worn bright reds and hot pinks all summer I'm really in the mood for very dark tones ATM. I bought Chanel Provocation a few months ago which is stunning. Currently have OPI black cherry chutney on my toes but nothing on my fingers as I'm on a canal boat this week :) I love OPI.

QueenCadbury · 02/09/2013 13:23

Sounds fun kezz. I haven't worn nail polish for ages as have been away too. Might put some on for back to school! I love opi too although hate spending £11.50 but they do have much better colours than Rimmel which I also love. mad does Barry m polish last well?

OP posts:
MadAboutHotChoc · 02/09/2013 13:31

Barry M does well for a cheap polish. I use a bottom and top coat and it lasts 5 days which is how long I can bear to have it on before cleaning my nails and starting over with a fresh polish.

I am wearing a lobelia t-shirt and it looks great with my shocking pink nails and lipstick Smile

Kezztrel · 02/09/2013 14:16

Ooh lobelia tshirt sounds nice Mad, where's it from? Apologies if you've already said upthread.

MadAboutHotChoc · 02/09/2013 14:23

Kezz, bought it way back in spring from Primark (along with charcoal, white and black).

MadAboutHotChoc · 02/09/2013 14:26

Someone mentioned vests upthread - my DD has been wearing selection of vests (for a couple of quids each) from Primark since Spring and these have been washed countless times but have held their shape and colour really well.

MadAboutHotChoc · 02/09/2013 15:23

aftermay - is it this coat?

If so, the colour looks like a summer pink but I could be wrong as I haven't seen it in real life. Did it match one of the pinks in your swatch wallet?
