How often do you wash your hair?

I have cropped hair so it dries in the morning when I'm putting on some makeup, not used a hair dryer for years. However I recently changed my hair colour from blonde to red and was advised not to wash it every day to try and preserve the colour. The longest I can leave it is to wash every other day then I feel like a right manky coo and was it. Have tried dry shampoos but they make it feel candy floss. Any suggestions ?

I have a crop too, I do it every 2-3 days but since i had it cut I don't use shampoo, because I found every brand I tried made it seem greasy within hours.

I use a shower gel from Lush, its called Snow Fairy. It's lovely, and my hair can go a few days without a wash easily.

It's a seasonal limited edition though so I've had to stock up! Grin

Baby shampoo is good for preserving the colour as its a lot milder
In the long term though if you don't wash it every day it will stop feeling so yuck, it's crap because you have to go through the greasy period for a bit but after a whole you will find you don't need to wash it everyday

Allthingspretty · 23/03/2013 20:18

Once a week with long hair

QueenBee245 · 23/03/2013 20:18

Google the no poo movement, although I'm not brave enough to go as long as some of them have, but since washing every 2-4 dayside hair condition has improved loads!

cookielove · 23/03/2013 20:23

I have very thick hair 3/4 down my back (which I adore) and wash it every 2-3 days. Any longer and it smells although I have left it longer any less and it never be dry Grin

PigeonPie · 23/03/2013 20:24

I use Faith in Nature shampoo and conditioner and wash it twice a week. No problems and so much time saved by not having to dry and style it so often.

JumpHerWho · 23/03/2013 20:24

I used to wash, blow-dry and ghd straighten every 2nd day when I worked FT, but now that's my Saturday treat as the only day I work. I wash it usually Saturday, and then twice more during the week but don't blow-dry. Look like shite but my hair is in much better condition than it used to be and actually growing past my shoulders, rather than breaking due to being frazzled all the time. The days I straighten it I feel like a member of Girls Aloud

ilovepowerhoop · 23/03/2013 20:28

I wash every 2 days with a colour care shampoo e.g. l'oreal Elvive for coloured hair

Maat · 23/03/2013 20:28

I wash my hair every other day and use Elvive Colour Protect shampoo and conditioner to preserve the colour.

ilovepowerhoop · 23/03/2013 20:30

p.s. I have heard the opposite about baby shampoo and have read that it is good for stripping colour out of hair

Wewereherefirst · 23/03/2013 20:30

I wash my hair daily, it goes wild and untamable otherwise. It's twixt shoulder and bra strap in length.

greenandcabbagelooking · 23/03/2013 20:31

Every other day.

MintyyAeroEgg · 23/03/2013 20:33

I have to wash my hair every other day, otherwise it looks greasy like a teenager's. I am 50 and it naffs me off!

Fyouimfabulous · 23/03/2013 20:36

I have dyed deep red hair, I wash it twice a week to preserve the colour! I wash it on a Sunday night, by Wednesday morning I wear it up in a bun for work, and on Thursday I usually wear dry shampoo until Thursday night when I wash it again.
Anymore than that strips the colour really fast. I have to agree with the poster above who said after a while the condition improves, I think allowing the natural oiks through does your hair and scalp some good.

Fyouimfabulous · 23/03/2013 20:36

Oils not oiks ha ha

Snowgirl1 · 23/03/2013 20:41

Between shoulder and bra strap length hair and I wash it every day. I'd feel manky if I didn't. Have to admit that I'm a bit Shock that I'm in the minority - I just assumed everyone washed their hair everyday!

catlady1 · 23/03/2013 20:41

Every other day, and I have to put a bit of dry shampoo or talc in it on the second day and backcomb it a bit if I want to look acceptable. I used to wash it every day, I've been trying for years and years to "train" it to last longer, but I think I must just be a greasy person!

BassDownLow · 23/03/2013 20:42

I have a long bb, thick straight hair and , so shampooing too often dries it out. I wash my hair 1-2 times a week, but wet it and put some conditioner through it every morning in the shower before drying/styling.

BassDownLow · 23/03/2013 20:43

Meant to say'and coloured'

Springsister · 23/03/2013 20:49

Every day.
Can't have a shower and not wash it. That would feel weird.
It's fine. I've never left it longer to see what would happen.

Catbert4pm · 23/03/2013 21:00

Four times a week (ie after swimming).

Before I swam so much I was down to twice a week, from daily, and trying to achieve weekly. It's great if you can achieve once or even twice a week, but, to be fair, conditions (if you'll pardon the pun), have to be right for you to keep your nerve as you go through the greasy stage. But I sacrificed my reduced hair washing achievements on the altar of fitness (still a long way to go!). I have shoulder length, coloured hair.

Good luck Grin

Thurlow · 23/03/2013 21:07

Every day. I'm like you, its a crop and generally I leave it to dry itself unless its really cold. I do sometimes not wash it but it feels nasty to me, as if its all sticky and messy. Dry shampoo helps. But then I do smoke, so I think it would smell more if I didn't wash it every day.

LittlePandaBear · 23/03/2013 21:08

Every day - I have fine shoulder length hair and after I've slept on it it sticks out everywhere and feels greasy so I can't leave it any longer!

chickydoo · 23/03/2013 21:34

Twice a week
On a Sunday and either a weds or Thurs. My hair is quite long, past bra strap. It's in good condition, but washing dries it out.
