I love my tunics, leggings and boots and a bit that they're mummsy!

I am a petite size 12 with a tummy so find that look really flattering. I also love my skinnys too though.

Am mid 40's and struggle a bit to get the look right-don't want to look frumpy but also don't want to look like mutton dressed as.

These are the sorts of tunics I have been shopping for. I could not find them if I did not know they were labeled as tunics. Not tabards. Not sleeveless. Still called tunics because of the extra length.

Agree, OP! They are AWFUL. And if you think a tunic is covering your wobbly bits and skimming you down, you see sadly mistaken. But at least everyone's main thought will be, "there goes another woman in a tunic" rather than "there is a slightly fat woman".

I bloody live in the things! This is because I am the wrong side of middle age, sport a mahoosive midriff and suffer incremental bloat as the day goes on. I've still got decent legs, however (for my age). So I completely agree with Northern, "If I thought there was an outfit out there that would make me look thin I would be kidding myself. I am not thin. I will not look thin. I can look smart, comfortable, warm and like I've bothered though."

Trust me, you'd much rather have to look at me in a tunic than in something you might consider 'fitted'. Anyway, now I've cracked this year's layering thing, I'm not mumsy: I'm boho. Apparently

I don't think tunics exist. They all look either like short, shapeless dresses or big slouchy jumper dresses to me. Think they look better with opaque tights than with leggings, jeans or trousers. Why wear dresses and trousers together? It's just wrong.

I am very happy with the tunic/legging thing. I wear dresses for work - always.
I'm hourglass shaped and I have wasted so much money over the years on jeans which gap around the waist or fall off and are just plain unflattering. Good thick leggings or even (cover your eyes, Amblin) treggings sit nicely around my waist and unlike jeans, are comfortable to wear. And for the protection of the viewing public I wear tunics that come down to mid-thigh or even, gasp, almost knee-length. I may look mumsy, but who cares, I am a 48-year-old mum of three and I'm not trying to pretend otherwise.
Though I think my tunic/legging combos will look damn fine with these which I am hoping DH has taken the hint and bought me for Christmas.

Well they suit me and I'm sticking to them. I'm a pear shape who has no end of trouble finding jeans that fit properly and long tops/short dresses AKA tunics cover the large bum and thighs perfectly.

I actually think they're very unflattering if you're a pear or hourglass shape. If you don't want to emphasise your pear shape, why would you want to cover up your best feature (small waist and in-and-out curves) with a big shapeless baggy jumper, and have your heavy thighs sticking out underneath? Seems like the worst possible choice to me. I think they're best for apple shapes with slim legs.

I know how difficult it is these days to get jeans and trousers to fit though :(

But you choose a tinic which fabric and tailoring skims your waist. And for me, emphasises big boobs. None of my tunics are shapeless. I have about five at any one time and a I select each one carefully.
If it makes me lumpen it's a no goer.

I don't wear the big baggy ones, I choose ones that fit the curves but don't cling and are long enough to cover the heavy thighs. They really do balance everything out. Empire line are a no-no.

Tunics and leggings are only one step away from pyjamas, and the only time they are acceptable is post-birth or convalescing.

Nobody ever looked at a woman in a tunic, leggings and knee-high boots and thought 'there goes a stylish woman'.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding what a 'tunic' is - I thought they were the bum-length sack-shaped jumpers like in the link above. I would look awful in one of those.

But if it's fitted, and long enough to cover your thighs, i.e. knee-length, isn't that a dress?
