Uggs - are they really that bad?

After a class war broke out on another completely unrelated thread, it came up that UGGs are considered a serious no-no on MN. I must confess to owning two pairs (one black and one brown) and as a WFHM I wear them all winter provided it is dry. They are the comfiest, warmest shoes I've ever had. They are like slippers but for outside! I don't wear them on the outside of my trousers, this is a look I don't like, but inside a boot leg I consider them harmless.

Am I deluding myself and walking around in the winter version of crocs?

Thanks for that link worldgonecrazy, you may now be responsible for the self combustion of my credit card. Wink

PlaySchool · 22/11/2012 23:16

Uggs is short for "ugly", right?

scottishmummy · 22/11/2012 23:21

uggs and plantar facsitis lack of suport puts strain on plantar ligaments. like ballet pumps also v bad for feet

krystianah · 23/11/2012 00:01

Uggs are fucking hideous. Can you honestly see any style icon wearing them? Jackie O, Marilyn, Audrey Hepburn?

stickygotstuck · 23/11/2012 00:05

scottishmummy, that's exactly my issue with them - not adequate support.

I am relieved to see someone agrees they are not that great for walking (and uncomfortable). I thought it was only me! But then I walk like a rhino Grin

scottishmummy · 23/11/2012 00:07

faggy mammy kate moss wears uggs.enough said

londone17 · 23/11/2012 00:08

Nothing wrong with uggs. I love crocs the most.

AmberSocks · 23/11/2012 00:31

I dont own any uggs, mostly because i have quite wide calves and i dont think they would fit them?I have some knee length black leather riding boots i wear pretty much all the time with some leggings and a dress!

I agree re cheap versions, they kind of go all flat on the one side at the back, looks awful.

Love celtic sheepskin,i have some slippers from there and new baby has some brown booties that are gorgeous!

VestaCurry · 23/11/2012 00:34

They look cute on children (that squishy foot thing) but silly on adults imo but I'm only inside a computer [ smile].

Thanks Math! :) Did you celebrate as well?

Yes, Uggs is short for ugly, I believe. And no, can't see any fashion icon wearing them, but thank the good Lord above I have never cared to be a fashion icon. :o

FellatioNelson · 23/11/2012 03:47

I have no idea whether they are an MN no-no or not, but they are not called Uggs for nothing.

The are the ugliest, silliest shoes ever invented. You are right about them being like slippers though - they are slippers. Although why anyone thinks it's a good idea to wear the kind of thing worn by old ladies who can't afford to run the central heating, for wearing out in public as a fashion statement is a mystery to me.

You'll be doing vinyl rain bonnets next.

VikingVagine · 23/11/2012 06:21

Yup, bloke who came up with the design called them Uggs because he wife said they were so ugly.

I started wearing Uggs when they were cheap and unfashionable (at uni, 15 years ago to be precise). Then they became ridiculously expensive so I stopped buying them. I recently discovered Celtic sheepskin and have bought myself a pair of knee high popper boots. They are wonderful, so much nicer than my old Uggs.

As for fashion, well, umm, so long as DH finds me attractive then I don't really care about what others think (he hates Uggs and Crocs, but has conceded that my CS boots actually look ok with skinny jeans or short skirts).

MrsDeterminedandSpecialMum · 23/11/2012 06:33

I have Emu boots and they are lovely and fluffy - got them as a Christmas present 2 years ago & they are still going strong.

My daughters Uggs are on their last legs she's had them for a long time so for Christmas I've brought her some Celtic Sheepskin boots in Spice colour. Smile

krystianah · 23/11/2012 07:56

Kate Moss not a style icon, just a skanky model. Celtic sheepskin are even more hideous. It makes me laugh seeing people in Uggs. You look ridiculous!!!

MrsWembley · 23/11/2012 08:23

What's wrong with Barbours?

RibenaFiend · 23/11/2012 08:37

I love my tall chestnut uggs! Yes, my size 8 feet don't really look petite in them (but my feet are huge so I'm over that now!) however, if I work out the "cost per wear" I've had these boots for 5 years now I think, that's about £40/year and they are still almost perfect. No crazy wear on the soles or anything. I probably wear them about 40/50 days odd a year. So I'd happily pay £1/wear.

I DESPISE crocs. I run holiday camps and have had many a child in tears when their bloody vile unsupportive shoe has let them down, fallen off, broken (oh my god the fakes just BREAK) their foot has fallen out, they've rolled an ankle running because their shoe has decided it's bored and wants to stay still, they fall off on the monkey bars. My observations are that crocs on children impede their play. Angry

GrimmaTheNome · 23/11/2012 08:55

I'm not ever going to buy a boot - ugg or not - which doesn't have synthetic 'fur' in it, in case its one of the fakes lined with fur from China. They do not enforce anything like ethical standards (if you think such a term even applies to fur). If you don't know what I'm on about I'm sure googling 'Ugg' and 'skinning alive' will inform you (but I wouldn't recommend reading details, I'm still feeling sick). Its not real Uggs, but I'm not 100% sure I could tell a counterfeit.

Sod whether they are fashionable or not, and there's other warm comfy boots.

LookAtAllTheseFucksIGive · 23/11/2012 08:57

Ribena I absolutely agree about everything you just said there about Crocs. They are great for paddling in rock pools etc but thats it. My kids get them given or bought and aside from the garden they aren't allowed to wear them. I once saw a little boy end up with a split lip when excitedly running to the ice cream van and his shoe just flew off.
Uggs are still great. I wear them when stood on my feet for up to 14 hours a day. My feet love them.

FunBagFreddie · 23/11/2012 08:59

If you like them, wear them. Smile

My knitted Uggs ended up being too smelly to wear, despite washing them - due to getting wet a few times, so I chucked them. I used to wear them with my flared and wide legged jeans.

Tbh, I probably won't get another pair, but who really gives a monkeys about what other people choose to wear. I don't think the fashion police actually exist. Grin

I may look ridiculous but at least I am not rude and unpleasant.

worldgonecrazy · 23/11/2012 09:15

scottishmummy I read that link and it doesn't make sense. Sheepskin, like leather, is a natural insulator which works both ways, i.e. it keeps feet warm in the winter and helps wick away moisture and sweat in the summer, so feet don't get overheated in genuine sheepskin boots.

I don't own Uggs, but my daughter's Celtic Sheepskin minis do have arch support built in.

Grimma - I'm not going to google. Uggs are now made in China which does have lower welfare standards for animals, so any product made of animals which comes from that country is off my shopping list. However, Celtic Sheepskin boots are made in the UK and we do have animal welfare standards. Whilst our standards may not be perfect, at least we have awareness and rules which are supposed to be followed.

*Please note I am not getting paid any commission by Celtic Sheepskin!

Well I'm not keen on them but I succumbed last year down to warmth and comfort rather than style! I got Ugg Rosslyn as I don't like the shape of the foot on standard uggs.

The question is though....what's the alternative? Can someone name me a boot if you want warmth, comfort AND style? Come on, Ugg-haters!

TooImmatureGhostiesAndGhoulies · 23/11/2012 11:23

I hate classic Uggs because I like shoes and boots that make my feet look elegant, but I would consider wearing these, if they didn't cost £235, that is.
