I'm going to a party that states 'cocktail dresses' on the invitation. I'm not really a dress kinda girl, but I found one I liked www.greatplains.co.uk/product/womens+Dresses/J1LN8/Cats+Mansion+Dress.htm

It actually looks better in real life than in the photo, it's satin so it looks more cocktail-y.

I'd quite like to wear it 80's style with black footless tights and high sandals.

What do you think? Be gentle Grin.

Given the right figure, its fab!

shockers · 30/10/2012 19:18

Thank you! But with the footless tights and high black sandals? My figure isn't model-esque, but my legs are still ok... I hope. I've already bought the dress, it's the tights I'm wondering about. I think it would look right, but I'm not terribly up on the fashion of the moment.

Not for me at all, but you could look lovely in it. Sorry don't know

digerd · 30/10/2012 19:21

You should go with what you like and feel suits you.

shockers · 30/10/2012 19:24

I think it's a 'marmite' dress. DH liked it though!

I really like it & think it would look good with footless tights if you have slim legs, footless tend to make legs look shorter & fatter ( i can't wear them Sad )

noddyholder · 30/10/2012 19:26

I like it and would wear with footless tights but NOT leggings

shockers · 30/10/2012 19:30

That's an interesting point littlebird, I might have to go with full tights. I was slimmer in the 80's! I definitely wouldn't wear leggings either noddy, I wouldn't feel dressed up enough.

It looks really similar to a dress I have - Paul and Joe Sister and I love it either with opaques and shoeboots and blingy gold jewellery or bare legs/nude tights and killer heels and blazer for night out.

Can't imagine either with footless tights... not a fan of them I'm afraid! The dress is already pushing being cocktail-y enough, if you wear it you need to go fairly classic IMO. Nude tights and v high court type shoes in black patent, big black clutch, gold necklace.

HyvaPaiva · 30/10/2012 19:32

I always think just wear an outfit that makes you comfortable, there's nothing worse than feeling self-conscious or not 'you'. That said, if the invitation specifies 'cocktail dresses' then other people might go all-out with prom dresses/formal wear etc. I'm not saying you're wrong and they are right: I just think footless tights and sandals would make your dress look very casual for a cocktail setting. Maybe rather than an 80s look, go for something 1930s and art deco. You could still wear black tights. Deco accessories would look stunning with that dress, which is very sweet, and they are everywhere right now. A necklace, earrings, or bracelet of deco style would really bring out the dress. Hope I don't sound critical, it's a lovely dress, just trying to think of other styles. Smile

Numberlock · 30/10/2012 19:32

Looks lovely. I would wear an 80s style belt with it.

HoopDePoop · 30/10/2012 19:35

Looking at it again I say a def no to either black leggings/footless things or opaques - has to be nude tights IMO to be dressy - opaques can look scruffy for this kind of thing.

noddyholder · 30/10/2012 19:36

Expensive footless tights look very elegant with the right shoes etc The tunic/leggings look not the same at all so I say yes!

noddyholder · 30/10/2012 19:36

or bare legs if in good shape

HoopDePoop · 30/10/2012 19:37

Link me to elegant and footless as adjectives used for same photo noddy Wink

noddyholder · 30/10/2012 19:38

If I had a picture of me in mine I would Smile

HyvaPaiva · 30/10/2012 19:45

Actually, I agree with Hoop about the opaques.

littlebird3 · 30/10/2012 19:47

hoopdepoop nude tights look amazing on people with perfect legs & absolutely dreadful on us normal people.you are very lucky if you can wear them. I think good quality black tights would be fine. No belt though numberlock
shockers i think it's a great modern cocktail dress, wear what you feel good in wink

noddyholder · 30/10/2012 19:51

Nude tights heels and clutch = Loose Women Just say no!

Hopefully · 30/10/2012 19:56

I could definitely be convinced about expensive footless tights/heels, but I want to see a picture! Anyone got one?

shockers · 30/10/2012 20:01

This is fab! Thank you all... nobody has really not liked it (which I was slightly worried about because when I described it to a friend, she just raised one eyebrow!)

I have a selection of tights to try (my legs might not pass the bare test noddy), and I'm liking the accessory suggestions HyvaPaiva. You're quite right BYW, I saw the birthday girl's dress today, it's very dressy indeed... but it is her party!

Thank you for taking the time, I appreciate it Smile.

Are you the belt police then, littlebird? Wink

littlebird3 · 30/10/2012 20:18

Just think it would make the dress less suitable for a cocktail party.l really like the shape as it is
I am the flesh coloured tights police though Smile

littlebird3 · 30/10/2012 20:27

hoop a picture for you classy outfit with footless tights Grin
