I'm going to a party that states 'cocktail dresses' on the invitation. I'm not really a dress kinda girl, but I found one I liked www.greatplains.co.uk/product/womens+Dresses/J1LN8/Cats+Mansion+Dress.htm

It actually looks better in real life than in the photo, it's satin so it looks more cocktail-y.

I'd quite like to wear it 80's style with black footless tights and high sandals.

What do you think? Be gentle Grin.

Absolutely don't agree As a fashion maybe 2003-2005 but as a classic I know people who have always worn it. Wore some with a vivienne westwood dress recently and mucho compliments. Go with what suits you.Its like skinny jeans I have been wearing for over 10 years but it doesn't mean some people don't look stylish in tehm now

I don't dislike the look especially, just think footless tights / leggings and high heels for a night out is a bit 2005. Everyone was doing it then - haven't seen it except on non-fashionable people (which I'm sure you're not shocker ) for yonks.

Yes to red lips though! MUA shade 11 Smile

Interesting discussion. Dress and footless tights would not be my first choice at all for cocktail party but I think what you have can work as long as you get the details right and look polished and 'secure' in what you're wearing. How will you do your hair? I think a red lip would set the whole look off rather well.

I have been to several cocktail parties wearing a dress footless tights and heels! No one batted an eyelid or commented and I was not alone. One was v chi chi london job and there were several wearing them! Fine gauge slightly glossy they look great if you have good legs and lovely shoes

Perhaps you could point me in the direction of something more 'cocktail-y'... all suggestions taken on board!

The fabric is lovely, which I understand doesn't come across in the photo. It has a very soft satiny feel and the cats are a gold colour (in the same fabric, not a cheap gold).

Sorry but I think it's totally wrong for 'cocktail' outfit and with footless tights, even less appropriate. I don't think footless tights would work at all with it.

I think you need more fitted and nicer fabric.

Oooh... must order my footless tights from the Tiffany Quinn range, esp now I know they do them in lime Grin.

Viviennemary? How would you describe a cocktail dress? I'm asking because I didn't really know, despite having been to a lot of these 'dos'. It has seemed to be anything goes as far as I can tell... as long as folk have made an effort, and it's a dress. The birthday girl's dress is more like an evening gown or prom dress but as I said, it is her party! However, I always thought cocktail meant a shorter dress, less fussy IYSWIM?

I didn't like it very much I'm afraid. Also I don't think it's at all suitable for an event that says 'cocktail dresses'.

This is fab! Thank you all... nobody has really not liked it (which I was slightly worried about because when I described it to a friend, she just raised one eyebrow!)

I have a selection of tights to try (my legs might not pass the bare test noddy), and I'm liking the accessory suggestions HyvaPaiva. You're quite right BYW, I saw the birthday girl's dress today, it's very dressy indeed... but it is her party!

Thank you for taking the time, I appreciate it Smile.

I could definitely be convinced about expensive footless tights/heels, but I want to see a picture! Anyone got one?

hoopdepoop nude tights look amazing on people with perfect legs & absolutely dreadful on us normal people.you are very lucky if you can wear them. I think good quality black tights would be fine. No belt though numberlock
shockers i think it's a great modern cocktail dress, wear what you feel good in wink
