Who actually wears Next?

There is nothing that redeems that place these days. Even the shoes, which were once interesting, are mostly stripper shoes now. The clothes seeme to be aimed at the same demographic as Karen Millen etc but the people in there are much older. Quality is AWFUL - I remember the first Next Directory with its lovely swatches of wool suit fabrics etc. Jeans go massive and/or fray instantly.

Is it goingthe way of M&S? Ie tonnes of clothing but no target market and thus no customers?

sir sugar without outing myself I have worked at next ho and have friends who still do - I assure you the ethical policy is one of the best around - I say that as an ex employee with no interests in their success now
If you're at all concerned about ethics the only places I'd even consider on high at are prob m&s, next, jl, sainsburys, george and possibly monsoon
Zara H&M ok
As for the rest, some good some bad...

Cherrypie32 · 28/10/2012 20:34

New to school uniform this year I did a M&S shop for DS in July. He needed a few extra bits and ordered from Next, it's way better quality, his coloured polo shirts from M&S look like dish cloths already! I but bits and bobs just as I do from anywhere really and was only saying to DH last night that the fact that you can place an order at 8.30pm and it be there next morning is bloody amazing when you think about it.

CockBollocks · 28/10/2012 21:48

I am currently lounging in this the shame

I love it Grin.

Some of it is good, jeans etc. I find that for fashionable phases that you wont want to wear next year it is also a cheap option. The quality varies massively, however returning a poor quality item is never a problem.

I do work there though so the 25% off makes for a pretty good incentive.

Next used to be the main staple shop in my wardrobe in my early to mid 20s but I am now in my late 30s and haven't bought anything there in years. There's something about those awful half price sales which means that it is overpriced the remaining 10 months of the year so I just can't be bothered to go in there. It's odd because I am petite so in theory they ought to be one of my first ports of call, but somehow, I walk right past there every time. Not sure why! Confused

gindrinker · 28/10/2012 22:15

My interview suit is next, I found out about the interview at 4pm while at work, next is open until 8pm and their jeans are inoffensive...but I'd rather get levis/tommy hilfiger from TK maxx.

I get their jeans because they fit also. I occasionally get work stuff there, I know they'll have something which fits (16-18) but it's never my favourite item. "It'll-do" stuff.

gindrinker I also bought my last two suits at Next at the last minute, for a sudden interview!

I forgot about that. If buying a trouser suit, it'll probably be the first place I go to. Then I'll look at a zillion other shops if I have time. Then back to Next to get the first one I tried on!

aufaniae · 28/10/2012 22:27

CockBollocks ooh I have a friend who'd love that!

(Wonder if it'll go on sale before Christmas?!)

FunnyLittleFrog · 29/10/2012 06:56

I love Next bashing for some reason... maybe cos it's the only big clothes shop near me and it annoys me that it's so rubbish. If it was good my life would be easier.

Went in last week and left immediately crackling with static.

I wear their petite jeans as they're the only ones that fit me length wise, they 27&1/2in!

lurkingfromhome · 29/10/2012 08:35

I have a £70 gift card to spend that has been languishing in my bag since last Christmas because I can't find anything to buy. Am determined to find something vaguely wearable (and, indeed, I have to before Christmas or the card will expire) but it could be tricky ...

anniewoo · 29/10/2012 09:31

Can you still get the catalogue in the U.K?
Their shoes can be very plastic looking. But like T.K.Maxx you can get the odd gem.

fromparistoberlin · 29/10/2012 13:21

LOL at alma!!!!

they have the air of a dull office worker somewhere in Leatherhead I must agree

Abzs · 29/10/2012 13:58

I have just bought thses. Slightly influenced by a gift card from my mum, but among the best (IMO) of my search for a plain, mid heel, suede ankle boot.

Abzs · 29/10/2012 13:59

*these

I may ahve bought boots successfully, but apparently I can't spell.

Abzs · 29/10/2012 14:00

Damn!

QueenieLovesEels · 29/10/2012 14:10

I have thought that most of their stuff is tat up until this season where I have been lucky with a couple of their items. Their knitwear is generally rubbish as in thin and looses shape. Also it bobbles. I find their coat sizing all over the place. I hate the pattern palace items and the poofy bubble hem obsession.

What I have been impressed with are the high waist jeans, knee high suede black boots, sequin knitted dress and school uniform. They are good for childrens coats and womens leather boots too. Some of the plainer bags are good value too. I shop directory not in store. I cannot abide their stores.

CockBollocks · 29/10/2012 14:36

lurking if you go in and ask them to check your gift voucher balance on the till it then wont expire for another year from that day iyswim.

Meggles76 · 29/10/2012 15:10

Well, I shop there for myself and for DC. It's like any other high street store in that you have to look past all the tat to find the odd quality item. I buy mainly online from the odd directory. Agree about sizing. I am wearing a petite size 6 these days. However at 5ft their petite range proportions fit me well. I don't do shoes or bags from there.

This season's good buys for me have been a fitted white shirt, straight leg jeans, black short sleeve fitted cardigan, mulberry leggings/jeggings and a short cord skirt in teal.

Today I'm wearing a military style coat from there. Good quality and high wool content. Nice nod to colour block trend.

almapudden · 29/10/2012 17:49

They still sell those hideous acrylic jumpers with a shirt collar sewn into the neckline. Who actually wears those monstrosities?

dexter73 · 29/10/2012 18:10

I bought this top recently and I love it.
