Who actually wears Next?

There is nothing that redeems that place these days. Even the shoes, which were once interesting, are mostly stripper shoes now. The clothes seeme to be aimed at the same demographic as Karen Millen etc but the people in there are much older. Quality is AWFUL - I remember the first Next Directory with its lovely swatches of wool suit fabrics etc. Jeans go massive and/or fray instantly.

Is it goingthe way of M&S? Ie tonnes of clothing but no target market and thus no customers?

Kensington High Street Grin

crackcrackcrak · 28/10/2012 14:58

I love a next bashing thread Grin I worked in their head office and it was the most hateful job.

I found their clothes like watered down safe fashion back then and I do now.

I wear their leggings because RI changed theirs and I couldn't find any others but the quality is still shocking.

I have vowed not to buy children's clothes there any more because their quality is shocking too though tbf they are notvhugely expensive.

I travel to the next big town and buy jojo, gap and joules stuff twice a year for dd. I would never in a million years out their shoes on dd.

MaureenCognito · 28/10/2012 14:58

oh
no idea

MaureenCognito · 28/10/2012 14:58

Well it's not been a regular occurrence but DW needed to get some weekend shoes and found a pair of very sturdy flat, lace up ankle boots (which incidentally everyone admired) for DD which lasted well over a year and because they were neutral did the Winter/Spring/Summer crossover excellently. And we walk everywhere (no car) so they got a lot of wear and tear....

Mind you they were no cheaper than Clarks (but believe it or not Clarks rarely have DD's width fitting).....

But that's a max of once a year crossing the threshold....

Sorry, MaureenCognito if you are not London based you couldn't be expected to know London Patois/abbreviations for places!

sassythebloodFIRSTy · 28/10/2012 15:08

Oh Maureen - you present yourself as a barometer of all that is chic and stylish and yet you buy from next Sad

Clearly owt nice is yet to appear in the west mids. If there is such a thing.,,

i like their leggings and also have two drapey neck tops from there i really like

QuinnFabray · 28/10/2012 15:14

The people who mostly shop at Next are those who appreciate the catalogue and account service. I do two big Next orders a year, for school uniform and winter stuff, and then in the spring for summer stuff, shop from home, get it delivered, then spread the payment over the next few months. It's convenient, that's all. I rarely buy anything from there myself, apart from branded stuff occasionally. And I quite like their home stuff. And dh buys his pants and socks from there.

SirSugar · 28/10/2012 15:15

Polyester Palace. Fucking awful shite. This crap along with shops like H&M/Primark/M&S/TopShop et al contibutes significantly to the 100 million tonnes of textiles we dump each year a significant proportion ending up in landfill and polyester will only biodegrade in the presence of oxygen.

I absolutely refuse to buy in any of these shops and much prefer something from a company like this www.peopletree.co.uk/. You pay a bit more but its a false economy buying the shite the mass market retailers dish out.

Or buy vintage or from clothing exchanges

merlottits · 28/10/2012 15:25

I really like their trousers, jeans and school uniform. Some shoes and boots as well. I like the customer service.

I like NEXT.

MaureenCognito · 28/10/2012 15:30

i KNOW right?
although would dispute role as arbiter of taste. but recently its been handy for me work etc

MaureenCognito · 28/10/2012 15:30

oh i never do the SHOPS ew no #static

maybenow · 28/10/2012 15:36

I wear their cheapy jeans becuase they're one of the few places with a reasonable sized and reasonably stocked petite range.

I've also bought jackets from there and am considering a coat from there again because i need 'petite' for the arm length.

But wouldn't wear their 'smart' or 'evening' stuff as it all looks cheap.

SirSugar · 28/10/2012 15:36

Slightly dated article, but still makes for interesting reading www.treehugger.com/style/are-these-unethical-fashion-brands-hiding-in-your-closet.html

MaureenCognito · 28/10/2012 15:39

oh i dont care about all that. Bad. I know

TheDeathAndGories · 28/10/2012 15:40

Sassy you'll only get two weeks of summer next year anyway so its no odds

I may be about to buy myself some black trousers from there for work. Not many places do tall so choices are limited

marleybrodie · 28/10/2012 15:45

I have a beautiful velvet pea coat with gold lining bought in the sale in 1995
bring it out every Christmas....beautiful quality.
Also a large leather shopper bought in 1990 which still see's a bit of service.
Never venture in now just a see of man made fibres in sizes 6-22 New Look clothes at M&S prices.

LittlePandaBear · 28/10/2012 15:47

To the Next haters: Just like all shops, they have some nice things, and some not so nice things. Better to judge on individual items of clothing rather than the whole shop with thousands of things! Surely you can't have the same opinion on every item of clothing, or is it just the label you don't like? And I love stripper shoes

And yes there is a lot of polyester in clothes these days, but not everyone can afford to spend lots of money on clothes but may want something new to wear, so it's a bit rude to criticise cheaper shops in general.

SirSugar · 28/10/2012 15:48

And the ethical policy of big companies like Next is sometimes not worth the screen its written on as despite the fact they use 'ethical' suppliers, these suppliers then go on to outsource hiding the true cost of mountains of shite we can't possibly ever buy/wear in our first world luxury

marleybrodie · 28/10/2012 15:48

Sea that would be then!
Can't spell but did know what KHS was and I am up North!

cocolepew · 28/10/2012 15:48

I like Next, our local shop is lovely.
I like their linen trousers and tracky bottoms for work.
Recently got black linen 7/8 slim leg trousers and black motorbike boots, leather, and a fiver in the sale.

MaureenCognito · 28/10/2012 15:48

agree marley- i have plain sinlg breasted crombie style black coat from LAST CENTURY from there - wool. lovely

Willowme · 28/10/2012 15:49

I buy work stuff from next, especially trousers as they do a long leg length which isnt aimed at 6ft-ers but more like above average height women who wear heels.

I have to say I've has a few nice blouses and skirts from there that people comment on, and I find the quality very good. I buy alot for DS also and think everything washes really well tbh.

It's the cloesest big shop to me to also (live in the sticks) so that might have something to do with it too.

SparkyTGD · 28/10/2012 15:50

Don't buy much there anymore, used to like loads of stuff. Recently, every time when I've gone in & they gave me that £10 off if you buy online voucher I've never found anything I wanted.

Stripper shoes, definitely. There's a local mum who has really nice boots that she got from Next a couple of years ago but nothing similar in now.

But there is another mum who I think dresses well (girly but stylish mum-next door style) and I'm pretty sure she buys a lot from Next, she must be choosy & maybe have the catalogue, so gets the best stuff before it sells out.

I do have a nearly favourite stripy t-shirt I got from Next this year but sold out really quick (wanted to get another because I know I'll wear it till it falls apart).
