Who actually wears Next?

There is nothing that redeems that place these days. Even the shoes, which were once interesting, are mostly stripper shoes now. The clothes seeme to be aimed at the same demographic as Karen Millen etc but the people in there are much older. Quality is AWFUL - I remember the first Next Directory with its lovely swatches of wool suit fabrics etc. Jeans go massive and/or fray instantly.

Is it goingthe way of M&S? Ie tonnes of clothing but no target market and thus no customers?

I do. Work stuff. I have to wear a trouser suit every day and they're cheap enough (compared with other suit places - I'm abroad so don't have supermarkets as an option) so I can have 5 different jackets with 2 pairs of trousers each so that I have a different suit every day and only wear trousers once and jackets twice before washing.

Quality is shite though, but it means I get new ones quite regularly.

Oh and I buy next knickers, again because of the lack of Asda pants.

Selky · 28/10/2012 16:01

I see a fair bit of next stuff on people at work. I think that generally they like to have up to date clothes but don't want to spend lots on work stuff.

I don't mind it but I find that it shrinks badly, so I don't buy from next anymore.

Startailoforangeandgold · 28/10/2012 17:01

Quality with a capital Q is their downfall, DD1 has tops from 4 or 5 years ago that are just dying now after a really hard life.(11-14 yo are not the most careful).

I can't conceive of the paper thin stuff they have now lasting that long.

DairyNips · 28/10/2012 17:11

I actually think their stuff is good quality for the kids. Especially socks and pjs.

TessCorpseDissect · 28/10/2012 17:14

I used to love Next but have not bought anything from there for ages.

The sizes are all over the place. You can buy two size 10 items and they will be worlds apart.

As I didn't have time to try something on, I asked an assistant if she could tell me what the actual waist measurement of a size 10 pair of jeans was and she looked at me like I was bonkers. She had no idea.

Mamuss · 28/10/2012 17:17

I love the Next small boys stuff. Have found all really good. Hard wearing and washing and food for busy little boys

Mamuss · 28/10/2012 17:18

But nothing I like for myself (or the prices)

ToothGah · 28/10/2012 17:34

I've had a £20 Next voucher burning a hole in my purse since last Christmas - do you think I can find a single thing to buy in there?

Nope.

Don't like the shops, the stuff is just so uninspiring I just turn around and walk out again.

The only thing I found in there that I liked the other day was this coat in camel which was lovely, but I just don't need another coat/jacket (I have at least 15).

PS, any suggestions for the £20 voucher welcome.

regnamechange · 28/10/2012 17:41

Love next myself although quality has gone down! I've returned a few items over the last 2 years for this reason. However overall I like the storeSmile

QuinnFabray · 28/10/2012 17:41

You could use the voucher online and buy something branded. They do lots of non-Next stuff online.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 28/10/2012 17:54

I hate Next and I get annoyed about the fact that it used to be a great shop back in the early days.

The quality used to be fantastic and the styles very classic. I loved the way they used to display the clothes all neatly folded or just one of each size in each style on a wooden hanger. It felt special to buy from Next in the late 80's.

Now it's just full of cheap shiny fabric and ridiculous plastic high heels.

I do like their jeans for everyday wear though.

Can't stand the kids stuff - I stick to Boden , John Lewis and Fat Face for my two.

EdsRedeemingQualities · 28/10/2012 18:03

Oh I have avoided it since about 1986, and even then tbh. No, I did go to a sale there once about 15 years ago. It was Ok.

Now it's horrid - but actually the other week I went in and bought, on impulse, some really nice pyjamas. Two pairs. They're really nice.

Not that cheap, 20-something a pair, but very pretty.
And I then went upstairs and bought some nice cushions as well.

Some of their baby stuff was nice too - overpriced but nice. The assistants all seem to be orange though.

EdsRedeemingQualities · 28/10/2012 18:05

I agree about not buying polyester on principle though. It's everywhere these days and it's vile.

The PJs I got are cotton I think - brushed cotton, a fleece pair with stars on and a pink top/checked trousery pair.

EdsRedeemingQualities · 28/10/2012 18:07

Oh bugger

No they're not!

checky ones have gorn. I swear they're cotton. Sad

dexter73 · 28/10/2012 18:13

Some stuff is ok some is awful, like every other shop.

MissBeehivingUnderTheMistletoe · 28/10/2012 18:16

I haven't bought anything in Next for YEARS. I go in on occasion despite my better judgement and then see the crunchy crap polyester and remember why I swore that I wouldn't go in there again after last time

invicta · 28/10/2012 18:24

They do the best school trousers. There are some lovely clothes in the catalogue.

RSVPentathlon · 28/10/2012 18:29

boys shoes and pyjamas is what I get from them mainly

dexter73 · 28/10/2012 18:36

Pretty much all the shops are full of polyester now - I went into Zara today and I don't think I saw a natural fibre!

TeaJunky · 28/10/2012 18:47

I think this season the catalogue has some lovely little girls clothes. Ive just ordered DD's first ever uniforms from there which i'm happy with, and i'd say most of DD's clothes are from there - and the quality is fine. I wash things really quick as well, and tumble dry everything, and nothing has ever happened to anything from Next. H&M knitted dress leaked a bit of colour, on the other hand, in the washing machine on the right setting Hmm

Don't buy for myself from there though as I buy most of my own stuff from Zara. And I agree their sizes have gone a bit mad, even for kids.

All in all though, I do love Next, and our manchester city centre store is nice. Its just a shop at the end of the day, if you don't like it, dont buy from there!

crackcrackcrak · 28/10/2012 19:48

I disagree about kids clothes being good quality. They really arnt! The denim is ok but the jersey is horrid and I am boycotting that forever now. Next actually led me back to Marks for kids clothes - much better quality and less tacky looking clothes.
To be fair though some of their stuff will go through 2 kids if you are choosy but its just not a patch on Boden/jojo etc

NigellasGhost · 28/10/2012 19:50

pas moi

GwendolineScaryLacey · 28/10/2012 19:52

I do. Love their kids' clothes, M&S on the other hand are pure shite as far as kids' clothes are concerned.

The Next hatred makes me laugh though. I hate lots of things but I couldn't be arsed to start a thread moaning about them, they don't impact my life at all.

MedusaIsHavingABadHairDay · 28/10/2012 19:54

Oh dear , I had no idea NEXT was so hated! I don't buy polyester stuff but I always wear their jeans as they tend to fit me well! shuffles off miserably

Where AM I supposed to buy clothes from?! H+M tops are fine for work but their cotton stuff only lasts a month or so before it disintegrates in my washing machine:(

almapudden · 28/10/2012 20:04

They sell 'nice (polyester) tops' to wear on a work night out to Zizzi, with bootleg jeans and some low-heeled black boots.
