I sprayed this on in a department store the other day because I had never smelt it before and had heard it was a classic. Wasn't sure at first but when it had settled down a bit I LOVED it, it smelt like Christmas and I kept sniffing my arm for the rest of the day!

It does seem to be a bit of a "marmite" perfume -I have seen it mentioned on here. On the thread about "Worst Perfumes" the other day, and also just now on a thread about smells that should be nice that aren't.

I don't want to make people feel sick as I walk past them. . . but I really loved it!

Should I treat myself? Or stick to something a bit more subtle?

It's the only perfume that I've tried a squirt of then had to make a special trip to the loos to try (unsuccessfully) to scrub off. I do think people must have different chemical reactions to it - it doesn't smell at all like chocolate to me (that would be nice!) , it's just a dreadful acrid stench.

YouOldSlag · 24/10/2012 09:05

Hotslate. I know what you mean. when you try a scent you can't stand, it doesn't half have staying power. I've tried Angel a few times now, thinking maybe this time I'll "get" it, but still no. It just smells awful and I always wash it off. I just don't get why it's so incredibly popular!

41notTrendy · 24/10/2012 09:19

A lot of perfumes smell different on me, I've fallen in love with perfumes on other people or when they spray it on those little cards, but invariably they smell unpleasant on me. So as no-one has run away screaming when I'm wearing Angel, I wonder if it smells different on me?

LittleAbruzzenBear · 24/10/2012 10:17

I wear Eau de Star, Alien and Coco. They are all considered 'strong', but I think perfume smell depends on the wearer. Some perfumes are a rip-off when they don't linger, but these ones smell nice on me and last, or so DH and friends say!

LittleAbruzzenBear · 24/10/2012 10:22

I agree 41. A lot of my friends wear D&G, Donna Karan and Marc Jacobs, which make me feel sick if I spray them on my wrist, but smell lovely on them. We are all different and the way perfume smells is to do with hormones and pheromones. There is not a 'wrong' perfume, just the wearer picking the wrong one for them. Oriental and grapefruit work well on me. 'Fresh' perfumes smell soapy/washing powdery on me, but again, smell nice on others.

I have worn Angel since it first came out. It suits my skin and sits well on it. I have had so many requests as to what I am wearing because it does smell differently according to your skin type. It's a little annoying that it has become so popular!

I also wear Ombre Platine (Jean Charles Brousseau), Secret Oudh (Caron) and Felanilla (Parfumerie Generale). Angel is the only 'mainstream' perfume I like. So many perfumes on the High St seem to be 'designed by committee' and lack any individuality. It is just as easy to look at the Les Senteurs or L'Artisan Parfumeur sites and find something more unusual and they do samples for a small charge by post or free from their stores.

mignonette · 24/10/2012 11:45

The worst smelling perfume I've ever come across? Clinique Happy. Smelled like sour milk.

Ibelyx · 24/10/2012 12:02

I use mine for day to day. I don't mind it, but would much prefer alien. Treat yourself if you like it. Smile

saythatagain · 24/10/2012 12:14

I've worn Angel for years - with big gaps in between. I remember when I could only buy it in 'arrods.....and I live oop North. Twas very special back then. It falls into the heavy category, like Clinique's Elixir, Obsession etc.
Does anyone remember Giorgio Beverley Hills? Another heady one!
I think like all things, less is more.

WasLostNowAmFound · 25/10/2012 11:30

I like Angel, but wear Angel Innocent a lighter version. Sadly it's been discontinued (in favour of the revolting Womanity) but there's still leftover stock around.

squoosh · 25/10/2012 12:54

Angel is the most disgusting stench ever to invade my nostrils. I would rather lick a skunks anal glands than wear this.

But if you love it you should of course buy it. I'll cope with one more Angel fan in the world. Grin

valiumredhead · 25/10/2012 12:58

Urghhhhhhh it is VILE and actually makes me heave when anyone walks past me in a shop. And PLEASE if you really must use it - just use a tint weeny spray it is SO strong!

YouOldSlag · 25/10/2012 19:39

I'm amazed it's so expensive when to me it smells so cheap, like the kind of thing teenagers could buy for four quid.

bottleofbeer · 05/11/2012 22:20

I personally hate it, it knocks me sick and this is coming from a total perfume whore. Love Alien though, it's the only Theirry Mugler one I do like. It's a difficult one for me, if you love it then obviously wear it; but I'd be wary off wearing one that is frankly soooo hated. Having said that I wear Chanel Chance and I think that's also a bit of a marmite perfume that has to be used so sparingly otherwise you smell like a tart's handbag Grin

bottleofbeer · 05/11/2012 22:21

*of.

Chicinwellies · 05/11/2012 22:24

It smells beautiful on my friend but like overdone cake mix on me. I do however adore Alien, it is so addictive and receives compliments galore!

MrsBovary · 06/11/2012 00:04

I'm afraid it's guaranteed to make me nauseous. Horrible, very distinctive overpowering stuff. I received some as a gift and couldn't wear it again after the first try.
