Popcornia

Glad to have any culinary book recommendations from you- and other MNers too....

DonaAna · 29/10/2012 15:59

Hope you get better soon Mig! Sounds very painful.

Marsha I loved "The Bonfire of Vanities" too - it has one of the most memorable descriptions of hangover I've ever came across. This new one is lighter and a bit queasier (a bit too much old man fascination with porn), and Mr White Linen Suit is clearly out of his depth here a bit and some of the characters are a bit cartoon-like, but a good satire nevertheless - plus has a scene taking place during the previews of Miami Art Basel. It's a page-turner, and sometimes I just need something that zips forward without reader-alienating artistic tricks.

I still feel like Christmas - it's not 5pm yet and already twilight (plus I made comfort food from my childhood: meat stew with mashed potatoes and beets). Still working like crazy, but the new "Cafe Society" candle takes the edge off a bit.

DC have suddenly developed a fondness for nursery rhymes - I read them some most days and it's very satisfying. Wasted an hour in the morning doing that.

Shop too bad you couldn't compliment the stylish lady! And very envious of the roaring open fire (my parents have that, we don't). Also happy that that shape of padded jacket is fashionable - I have an olive-green down jacket in that style and am planning to start wearing it soon. Daytime high today 13C - was 26 last week! Quite a change...

Have watched some great trashy DVD's this last week (have been on A/L as have to use some up or lose it)....Saw 'Young Adult' with Charlize Theron (quite appalling character), 'Bad Teacher' with Cam Diaz which I did laugh at and watched my beloved 'Moonrise Kingdom' again....My dream job would be to work as a Production Designer with Wes Anderson. This film has such a wonderful look.

This is super-cute-

as is this - pinterest.com/pin/457326537130295471/ although I don't know who made this....

Ouch Mig! Hope you feel better soon.

I have had a morning of online browsing and shopping. Ordered a couple of bits from Pure Collection - a cable knit dress, cashmere sweater and skinny belt for wearing as a wrap bracelet - and the Chan Luu scarf. Also contemplating a couple of other bits, but have traumatised my card enough for one day I think!

mignonette · 29/10/2012 16:41

I do seem to be prone to Kidney infections. Hence my constant prowling of the internet for pure cotton or wool tights!

Hopefully I received so many 'Pure' catalogue inserts in yesterdays papers and had a look myself. That boyfriend sweater is perfect. What shade did you choose/ I love their Sapphires, navies and the ochre yellow/browny shade. The latter looks surprisingly good with purple. I also like the cropped cardigan and am contemplating the Ponti Di Roma pants as they look indestructible. I have a Max Mara Ponti A line black skirt that I'll likely be buried in so many times am I seen in it.

Stylistas, I (or rather my DP) need your help! DP was due to fly to New York today with his senior management team to look at retail and other lifestyle concepts. But Hurricane Sandy has put paid to that plan. They have decided to go to London instead - but they have no itinerary. I have been wracking my brains today but any ideas would be good - newest and best shops/restaurants, new concepts in existing shops... whatever! Tell me!

Merci Smile

mignonette · 29/10/2012 18:31

Marylebone High St is a great walk- independent stores such as Ortigia, food (La Fromagerie), restaurants (peter Gordons' 'Providores') and chains such as Comptoir des Cotonniers and the Kooples on the west side and Theory and Sandro on the east side. St Christophers Place has Mulberry, Kookai and Marimekko, Whistles, FlyLondon and T M Lewin.

Polpo which is a Venetian Baccaro - polpo.co.uk/# for food in Soho, Smithfield....Or Hawksmoor for big chunky meaty man food. other options are Burger & Lobster at 29 Clarges St in Mayfair W1 or Bubbledogs at 70 Charlotte st, W1 which are all near the stores mentioned below-

For serious design/clothing heads, I recommend Dover Street Market - london.doverstreetmarket.com/dsmpaper/ on Dover St, W1 followed by Acne on the same street.

I love going to the Saatchi Gallery, Duke of York Square, SW3( near Sloane Squ with all it's amenities) which has a fantastic shop with really eclectic products.

shopafrolic · 29/10/2012 18:32

Without giving too much away Bonsoir what type of shops? Just clothing or new concepts to the way we shop?
In terms of exciting places / restaurants these guys are often useful......

Tell them to google the itineries of London's cool food trucks. There are some amazing ones now. Plenty around Spitalfields, Hackney, Old Street and Bow. Broadway market/London fields in east London will provide plenty of things to do and see in a day.

shopafrolic · 29/10/2012 18:35

Some interesting stuff here but would need to check still up to date

Bonsoir, apparently the new Burberry flagship has got a lot of innovative features - article here

mignonette · 29/10/2012 18:36

And Bermondsey has great places to see and cool walks through really old London, alley walks dating back to Medieval times. I like it for it's atmosphere.

shopafrolic · 29/10/2012 18:39

Was jus about to cross post re: Burberry and then cashed! The interactive shopping elements sons amazing

The Stella McCartney parquet floor is something to see also - stores on Bruton St and Fulham Rd

Dover St Market, home of Comme Des Garcons is the place to go, definitely.

shopafrolic · 29/10/2012 18:41

If it's retail trend related then pop up stores within stores are big right now. Harrods and others do this well.

Bonsoir · 29/10/2012 18:56

Oh you are all brilliant! I have to go and make dinner right now but keep them coming!

DP is in cosmetics (runs a big French cosmetics chain) but needs to look at all types of innovation, across all retail sectors - also restaurants, hotels etc!

mignonette · 29/10/2012 18:58

Ortigia is a gorgeous store. Cosmetics A La Carte is great for cool new industry brands. Space Nk is rubbish now. Liberty cosmetics Dept is always worth a look.

mignonette · 29/10/2012 18:58

Shrimpys restaurant in an old filling station in Kings Cross is pretty cool.

lulaloon · 29/10/2012 19:15

Liberty's normally has something.

Thelondoner blog is brilliant for new restaurants / general London things

shopafrolic · 29/10/2012 19:25

Very random one then and completely non cosmetic related.... Don't shoot me down for mentioning the word on MNV!!!! Argos have a store in Whitechapel that has a tiny footprint. Because it is by the tube station customers can check stock and reserve online or go in-store and reserve at lunchtime and collect on their way home that night. Very successful concept for that part of town and good sales from a tiny sq footage

Aesop - dh is saying stuff to me about this, he went to some innovation thing.

Apple, Regents St - oldy but goody for clean lines and brand loyalty.

shopafrolic · 29/10/2012 19:49

Feel a little sick that I mentioned Argos when talking about innovation - hope you all understand the reasons why!!!!!!!

MarshaBrady · 29/10/2012 19:54
