NomDePlume · 23/03/2006 18:19

I was rather thinking that the swirls would disguise any post baby saggage.

cod · 23/03/2006 18:20

foxinsocks · 23/03/2006 18:22

think that's why people do the big belts - to hide the saggy bits

NomDePlume · 23/03/2006 18:23

Hate the sequins

cod · 23/03/2006 18:25

oh you koll joy

OP posts:
foxinsocks · 23/03/2006 18:25

if they don't come in a bit at the waist or aren't of clingy material, they make you look preggers

NomDePlume · 23/03/2006 18:27

shapeless ones look like nightshirts on me. Sequins would just turn it into a spangly nightshirt

cod · 23/03/2006 18:28

np yes have all buttons present and correct. Hate sewing though.

Cod yes I think it was all those crisps you sent.

nailpolish · 24/03/2006 07:24

yuk cod that dress looks like a primark reject

i dotn think you have to be thin for swirly dress, just have a nice figure or the swirls will stretch at all the wrong bits

and buying the right size is important Grin

OK I am reporting back my shopping expedition!!

You lot made me brave the small sizes of Zara I'll have you know:)

Anyway aside form being an XL in Zara (and I'm a size 14, so NOT that huge) I discovered the following.

A full skirt in any way shape or form = Mumsy. Sorry it just does, didn't seem to matter the length or how much clevage was on offer, full = my mother :)

The wrap around type of shirt dress was deeply unflattering as it seemed to always have a full skirt too.

The light colurs with stripes = nurse. As I thought, fine if you are young, but not great otherwise, also they look seethroughish.

Coddy's one with sequins = V V short - mid thigh and I am ony 5'3" Looked tarty/tacky

Dotty P's pink pattern one, v nice, but FAILED the gape test :) Lovely when standing still, if you move, crouch, sit, buttons go all over the placve and will pop off I am sure. OK for a standing wedding

Dotty P's trpical print dress looks like vomit in real life and didn't work on me, fit was OK ish, sleeve a bit tight (but I have FAT arms)

Debenhams seemed v sparse, loads on website, but I couldn't find them!

Next again, in catalogue, not in store.

Zara was pretty sucessful and made me realise the best style for us all (well provided you have norks!) a simple fitted dress, self belt with elbow length sleeves and a MAXIMUM a lineish skirt. ANy less means no sitting, any more = mumsy.

There was one I particularly liked, but it was linen or RAMIE (cheap linen) and although black was pretty lightweight. It would crease REALLY badly. It was v sexy though, but I just don't DO linen.

The one I bought was Dotty P, black with a faint pinstripe, a kind of placket at the front, oversized buttons and self belt. Knee length, but buttons mean a decent split at front, not too tight, so no gaping, but with buttons undone plenty of norks on show mean not too mumsy. I was wearing 4" heels at the time that might have helped. Can't show a pic as none on website.

HTH :)

NomDePlume · 24/03/2006 19:08

I'm going to go into town tomorrow and have a good look.

NomDePlume · 24/03/2006 19:08

How much was the Dotty P dress you bought, crunchie ?

Cristina7 · 24/03/2006 19:21

I tried on and bought a Next brown wraparound linen dress. It has short sleeves. It's lovely, really nice, looks much better on me than on the hanger. DH agrees.

crunchie · 24/03/2006 19:27

NdP £30. However I am still not sure if I bought the best possible dress, I am sure there MUST be a better one out there. I think it is a bit long (for me) as it is below the knee I think on the knee would be better, and slightly tighter in the skirt IYKWIM

The perfect dress would be a heavyweight garderdine type fabric, but with a little bit of a stretch in it. A simple traditional fitted shirt top and slighlt a line (but nearly straight) skirt, this one has a bit long and slightly fuller skirt. I am going to keep lookimg/trying for a bit!

NomDePlume · 24/03/2006 19:29

Crunchie, I'm 5'7" so the length might be a bit better on me. I like the sleeve length on the one in Next, but think it may be too long in the skirt for me.

cod · 24/03/2006 19:31

i liek a straight skirt though

OP posts:
NomDePlume · 24/03/2006 19:34

sweaty polyester

crunchie · 24/03/2006 23:01

didn't even see the swirly one TBH.

Like I say I think more research is in order, so I am looking for a black this slightly strechy one with a knee length skirt that isn't linen. If anyone finds one, please tell me. I am going to go into Colchester tomorrow so I will look again for other options.

crunchie · 24/03/2006 23:37

Oasis might have one \link{http://www.oasis-stores.com/index.php?action=gotFlash\here} If this is not direct to the page, look unser all dresses and there is a sexy stretch shirt dress in black.
