Just had a Charles Tyrwhitt catalogue through with an order from the White Company, and it's gone all Boden, with whimsical descriptions - the one for their \link{http://www.ctshirts.co.uk/department.aspx?DepGrpCode=WOM&DepCode=WTTD\shirt dress} (the linen one) I just had to share:
'It seems like yesterday. I was fourteen and we were having tea with the vicar. Mrs Rhodes Brown had arrived with a tray of Earl Grey, wearing the most beautiful shirtdress and looking stylish and elegant - the perfect older woman. Just as I was putting a cup to my lips, in came Daisy, the vicar's daughter - Ding Dong - she looked the spitting image of Greta Garbo - hypnotic eyes, perfect bone structure and a shirtdress to die for. My love for the shirtdress had just begun.'
And if that doesn't put you off buying it, I don't know what will...Grin

OP posts:
noddyholder · 25/03/2006 11:13

I do love em but maybe a bit mumsy with big boobs

eminencegrise · 25/03/2006 11:17

oooo, jacqueline, i really like those dresses! especially the stripey one.

crunchie · 25/03/2006 13:14

Noddy, just undo another button and they aren't too mumsy then!!

COD Oais haven't got that dress in yet, I went to ask and it should be in this week. Really annoying huh.

I tried on the swirly one from Debenhams today, quite nice tbh, but too short unless wearing jeans under (mid thigh-sih)

So lets hope Oasis comes up trumps :)

cod · 25/03/2006 17:06

reporting back from shopping trip yesterday

tried on a red one in miss selfridge - looked GORGEOUS on the hanger, quite dressy, in postbox red, with large covered buttons and a nice belt. material was very clingy though, and would stretch to the moon and back. had an annoying elasticated waist and a full skirt (which i agree is mumsy im afraid) but i think it would look really really nice if you are over 5'5". so look out for it

went to next but they didnt have any in the shop! asked the assistant and she said "no they are in the directory though" pft. not very helpful. but i DID try on a lovely big-spotted dress that was semi-wrap, navy, with a cute bow belt. am seriously thinking of buying it for a wedding. very nicely cut. and it comes in petite.

the best one i saw was in h&m, i saw a black one, a white one and an orange one (which if it had been warm and sunny outside i might have liked). i tried on the black one and it was great. nice length, tie-belt. top button at a fab height for unbuttoning Grin. and i was thinking of franny at the time, so i checked the buttons nad they werent sewed on too well so i would have to re-do them, but apart from that it was really nice. wish i had bought it, might just go back. i forgot to sit down in it though

isnt it annoying when you dont buy something then wish you had for the rest of the day??

FrannyandZooey · 26/03/2006 09:59

NP don't just sit down in it, you have to dance around with 2 toddlers in it. That is the only sure fire button test :)

freshstart · 26/03/2006 10:11

I like them, v short with very wide belt to cover small muffin.

Love that last one on the asos links over trousers - very luscious

nailpolish · 26/03/2006 10:12

Grin franny

forgot to add, the sunday times style mag has 10 shirtdresses in it today,

the boden one looks awful!
there is a nice tennis-theme one from tommy hilfiger (if you have a spare £150)
a spotty laura ahsley one
a cheap-looking thin material one from stella mc
a safari one from mk one (v cool looking)
a stylish mulberry print
a plain red one from mavi
an overpriced silk one
a grey quite-ish full skirted one from george at asda (actually v nice)
and the best one is a really nicely cut white round necked one from fenwicks (which we dont have up here, bummer)

v v nice

the stylist at sunday times must be an mner Wink

hermykne · 26/03/2006 10:30

i adore shirt dresses. have a multitude of them.

nailpolish · 26/03/2006 10:33

herm i saw the pink boden one in the catalogue and really liked it, the picture in the sunday times mag makes it look awful. bad photo. its the blue with the stripy belt.

hermykne · 26/03/2006 10:36

yeah its the same one, i got the brown colour. but the belt does sit more empire line than waist.
which is not bad for a bloated tummy

cod · 26/03/2006 12:22

ok tired ont eh DEBENHAMS swrily one

skirt is not shape at ala nd material looks bad on skirt
