How many coats do you own?

I have a thing about not buying clothes that I don't need.

I am thinking of buying a casuak parka, but already have:

One wool coat- Boden- now into 4th winter but lovely ( it's plain dark grey)
One wool coat Jigsaw - gorgeous and best but can be dressed down with jeans etc.
One new dark colour trench coat Mint Velvet
One waxed biker jacket.

Numerous fleeces/ Gortex for walking - not town wear.

Would that get you through the autumn/ winter or can I buy a parka guilt-free?

If you have enough money then buy it :)

I have fewer coats than that, but I am a little unusual I think.

Caerlaverock · 19/09/2012 12:32

I have one enormous duvet style coat
One naice cord coat which I have to be quite thin to fit
One peacoat/jacket
One raincoat gortexy thing

I would like more too!

MrsSJG · 19/09/2012 12:32

Far too many Grin

Pinkforever · 19/09/2012 12:33

A purple wool coat with fur collar-next
a shorter double breasted blue coat-new look
a faux suede and fur coat-new look
a beige mac-h&m
shower resistant mac-marks
rain mac-new look

I want a new winter coat though-a proper wool one-must be single breasted and preferably with a hood-if you see any give me a shout!

UntamedShrew · 19/09/2012 12:36

My name is Untamed and I'm a coataholic too Smile

I'd get the parka. In fact I have a similar list but am about to add a danafae / merrell proper parka/coat for cold, wet days.

I have
Smart:
Moshcino long navy wool cashmere coat
Zara black capey thing
Mango classic trench
Zara red belted short coat
Bi la li Short black coat
Planet black & white wool check coat

Casual:
Barbour navy waxed riding jacket
Navy anorak

Oh and about 79 blazers ranging from super smart to pretty casual cord or denim or jersey affairs.

There's an obvious (!) gap there for something warmer but still casual. I'm going to put that right Grin

DH thinks I have a problem

Caerlaverock · 19/09/2012 12:36

How long before someon comes and shouts at us because they can only wear clothes made of leaves?

Caerlaverock · 19/09/2012 12:37

Respect untamed, my Dh is like the guardian of the wardrobe he would do his nut at all that

Sleepwhenidie · 19/09/2012 12:45

A warm, fur trimmed parka that cost £££ but has earned its keep, about to start 3rd year of being my everyday coat, i love it
A short black shearling jacket
A purple waterproof ski jacket for really wet days (and skiing Grin)
a short black leather jacket, 18yo, plus a grey biker one i bought last jan
My favourite, a full length black shearling joseph coat, which is to die for but can only be worn when it is seriously cold and im not climbing lots of steps (too long)
A smart black wool coat, cocoon style, good over dresses for evenings out when its not cdold enough for shearling...also very old, maybe 15yrs.

I am missing a longer, waterproof coat for wet school runs, the mn holy grail! Still havent found one i like.

I think its worth investing in fantastic coats and a parka is particularly practical, go for it Smile

sweetheart · 19/09/2012 12:47

I own dar too many but I still never seem to have the right coat when i want it!

I have:-

A mid length beige trench coat
A long grey wool smart coat
a black leather jacket (which I love but should be in a different colour!)
a red short mac
a light grey superdry waterproof coat
a short blue padded jacket
a cropped denim jacket
my team sport winter water proof coat
blazers in various colours (do they count)
a kharki parker which I planned to get rid of but haven't found the right coat to replace it.
A (fake) fur short jacket

I think I have more but those are the ones I can remember off the top of my head

the trouble is i have varying requirements and don't seem to be able to find coats that meet them all!

lljkk · 19/09/2012 12:53

Most of mine are someone else's castoffs. I think I have about 10 in total. Cannot conceive of buying one just to look smart.

MarshaBrady · 19/09/2012 12:55

Stella M green one
Bruno cream one (very old now but still good)
P&J navy trench. needs to be replaced

I would like a pea coat.
And a jacket type warm one for autumn.

DameEnidsOrange · 19/09/2012 12:56

Too many but none ever seem right iyswim.

Boiled wool swing coat - lovely and warm, smart but no hood
Boiled wool pea coat - ditto and doesn't cover my hefty behind
Boiled wool 3/4 sleeve coat - bought being a sheep on a whim when the shops were full of them, no good to man nor beast but can't bear to chuck it away as it's a nice royal blue colour and I always get compliments when I wear it, except my arms freeze or I look silly with cardigan sleeves hanging out the bottom
Suede blazer - fine for autumn not good enough for winter
Cotton striped blazer - cooler summer days
Old fashioned type barbour jacket - warm, has hood, but makes me feel like I'm wearing my mum's clothes
Regatta waterproof coat - no warmth to it but sweat like a pig in it.
Hooded duffel coat - hood too big and flappy to actually be useful, soaks up water like a sponge
Black velvet jacket - impractical but ok for a night out
Black shiny blazer - ditto

Pascha · 19/09/2012 12:58

Loads. All hiding in the loft as they have gone out of fashion or I got fed up with them. Some are years old.

I have a brown leather jacket and a cream wool duffel coat on active duty this winter. I would like an inbetweeny coat but nothing looks good at the moment.

indiechick · 19/09/2012 13:04

Currently just one black wool long coat and one black raincoat.
I need, need, need the wool wrap coat I've seen in evans and the short black wool jacket in M&S. Cost £100 for both.

Millie1 · 19/09/2012 13:13

Black mandarin collar wool coat - forget the brand but it was £££ around 12 years ago - still looks good
Comptoir des Cotonniers grey mac style coat with a really warm lining which can be taken out
Brown Barbour - got it last autumn. Lovely but it ain't warm!
Green Ralph Lauren cropped down jacket with hood
Aigle Lomyland which I just got to be my waterproof, warm, school-run coat

And my 'not to be seen in public' 14 yr old Berghaus with fleece - gardening and farming only now!

Sonotkylie · 19/09/2012 14:13

I'm not telling because then I would have to face my addiction and I DON"T WANT TO. So in my book you can certainly justify casual parka ...
Actually I bought something similar last year and it made all the difference. I now have something to keep me warm and dry with a hood but also smart coats, funky coats, jackets, duvet coat for when its freezing etc etc. So I can justify keeping them all! Good news is that this year I don't feel the need for coat purchase and that is the first time in millennia

MissWooWoo · 19/09/2012 14:40

black swing coat
black/white herringbone
brown satin-feel trench coat (very thin)
cream and brown pow check trench coat (very thin)
black hip skimming trench coat (very thin)
dark denim blazer
black denim blazer
grey pleather biker style jacket (never worn!)
various less structured "going out" jackets

nothing with a hood, nothing "wet weathery" ... clearly I need to go shopping!

Bonsoir · 19/09/2012 14:42

I don't really understand the OP. Everyone needs several coats, according to weather/outfit.

mcmooncup · 19/09/2012 14:42

I have fucking loads. I would estimate, well over 30. I have coat ishoos

worldgonecrazy · 19/09/2012 14:46

I have one and a half wardrobes full of coats, probably about 20 in all.

ShobGiteTheKnid · 19/09/2012 14:48

None.

I emigrated an threw them all away. Lowest temperature here is 20, at night. Days never below 30. :)

MirandaWest · 19/09/2012 14:53

Am trying to think how many coats I have. There's a pink mac that's about 5 years old that I think I am going to get rid of as didn't really wear it this summer and has gone a bit threadbare. I have a winter coat I got last year so that should be OK for a while yet. I refound a cord jacket in my wardrobe which I'm wearing at the moment. And I have a cagoule.

2gorgeousboys · 19/09/2012 14:56

I have

Smart coats:
Black wool belted
Black longer length thicker wool
Plum wool belted
Green and brown patterned 'granny coat' (sounds strange but gets loads of compliments)
Fake fur inherited from Granny and only worn on special occasions
Beige knee length trench coat
Vevet evening coat
Grey wool

Casual:
Duvet jacket for sports touchlines
Waterproofs x 2

Plus an assortment (about 20) of jackets and blazers.

I think there is a gap at the moment because I don't have anything for smarter (ie not sports watching or dog walking) casual weekend wear. I'm thinking of a Barbour but not sure.

CoatyWoaty · 19/09/2012 15:01

Bonsoir what is there not to understand?
I was saying that I could get by with my existing array of coats.
I have 2 nice smartish coats- one much more £££ than the other- in wool which means they are not great for warm but wet days.

The new mac fits that bill- warm but wet.

The waxed biker fulfils the casual " out in the country" walking but smart need, as well as everyday shopping for food etc. The only downside is that it's not long- and the parka is 3/4 length so would be warmer if warm and casual were needed.

I have a tendency to buy more coats than needed and they end up on ebay or at charity shops as they are out of fashion before they are worn out.
