For anyone who likes to talk about style, nice stuff that they've bought and so on.

Interesting Hopefully. I have decided everyday basics is an area where I refuse to compromise, so my tops come from T by A Wang, Vince, American Vintage and Majestic. Will probably invest in some by Feel the piece, but then we are into 3 figures. I wear them more than anything else in my wardrobe so CPW is good. The Massachusetts ls tops from AV are long, but tissue thin, which I like but may not be your pref. IO also does good long tees but price diff negligible and colours limiting.

Hopefully · 10/10/2012 12:01

I find the AV stuff wears out v quickly - had two tops from there. Love Vince but very little in Autumn colours. I am quite hard on my everyday tshirts (randomly, i wear them through leaning over a cutting table for hours on end when I'm fabric cutting) so I need more, but am loathe to crack into the Leather Legging Fund.

AmberNectarine · 10/10/2012 12:07

Ah yes, the leather leggings fund. I think we should hold a street party when you eventually find 'the ones'. Obviously I will expect to see them at all future meet ups for the rest of time...

I was having similar emotions about saving for an Alexander Wang Rocco, but them I just thought get DH to buy it for me! Also should prob wait until after style day for investment purchases right?

DonaAna · 10/10/2012 12:45

I'm happily wearing a H&M vest today. I'm still looking for slightly thicker cotton. Am going to order a few white t-shirts from Hanes to see what the quality is like. Have some old Fruit of the Loom ones that are brilliant, but a tad short.

Wearing the pizza green jeans with a raspberry/rose red short-sleeved cardigan and sky blue mock ostrich ballerinas and Paradis lipstick today. All swatches from my color wheel. A bit bright but works somehow.

I love the Rocco Amber.

I have such a lot of clothes that further purchases are justified only in exceptional cases. Counted everything on the rack / piled up near the dresser last week and got 100 items (real clothing, such as skirts, jeans, trousers, tops, dresses; not counting socks, underwear, scarves, accessories etc). If you have 100 items and wear 2 at once, there are almost 5000 possible different combinations; if 3 together, about 160000 different ways. You could refine the maths by categories, but the result is still always thousands of different possible combinations. Maybe this explains why I rarely wear the exactly same outfit twice: all my colors match each other colorwise. Confused

AmberNectarine · 10/10/2012 13:17

Oh yeah, spaghetti strap vests are H&M every time for me. £3.99, jobs a good'un.

Have blogged the Great Cheap T-shirt Experiment Grin. It will be interesting to see how it goes.

I have about 4 hours worth of work to do in the 75 minutes before the nanny leaves. Which is why I am wasting time on here.

Love that scarf Pop. Great size too.

I'm terrible with basic things as I want them to be good quality and colours. But baulk at £70 and can always find something else to spend that on. So I wear what I have til it falls apart. Will try and stock up in the sales.

I like your experiment Hopefully.

Amber will be very surprised if the Rocco doesn't fit into your style.

I feel like getting a stretchy mini skirt, dark grey. Should be something I get in the sales shouldn't it.

Anyone started thinking about Christmas / end of year party dresses yet?

OP posts:
AmberNectarine · 11/10/2012 16:44

Get a T by A Wang twisted one Marsha, they are great!

DonaAna · 11/10/2012 17:28

Oh I love the Pantone chart Pop. Have seen a similar one featuring the Queen.

But I also quite like La Merkel - it's quite something when a woman is more important than her clothes. So looking forward to mature middle age when I get to wear whatever I like (hello elasticated waists?)...

Have a cocktails invitation two weeks down the line - this time LBD for sure, the only remaining issue will be whether it will be too cold for the prettier sleeveless ones.

Will go to a concert tomorrow, rain in the forecast, so that limits my options.

Hit a good flow state working tomorrow. Unfortunately practicalities intervened - it looks like DD2 needs to get her tonsils out, and I have to arrange the logistics. ENT appointment next week.

Have spent the day in my rococo pattern pleated skirt and a white tee.

DonaAna · 11/10/2012 17:29

Working tomorrow schmomorrow...

Hopefully · 11/10/2012 20:39

Marsha if someone invites me to a party, I will start thinking about a dress Grin. Incidentally, I saw the Joseph dress you linked and I liked in a shop yesterday. Not special, the fabric was heavy and not as expensive looking as it should have been, iykwim. Nice shape though.

Marsha I used to like a good stretchy mini (over leggings or opaques, as my legs are not up to any more baring than that). I believe I used to have an American Apparel one.

I am insanely busy at the moment. possibly because I spend too much time on here. Ho hum.

MarshaBrady · 11/10/2012 20:56

Oh yes Amber I do have this T Wang one. I will try it out. Good thinking.

Dona oh good luck for your dd2 and the tonsils. Love your skirt and top.

Hopefully for some reason being bolded twice made me giggle. Thanks for Joseph info. Sort of glad it isn't up to scratch as I don't think it's right anyway. If I was having a party I'd invite you Grin

Marsha good material and great cut and fit is the key in party dresses - anything that makes you feel comfortable. I have so many party dresses, but my favorites are made from silk (warm season) or thick jersey (cold season). I like a simple shift and A-lines too. Fiddly details, awkward necklines, anything that requires continuous adjusting or shapewear is a no for me. I prefer black dresses as they are the norm at the evening cocktails I most often go to, but tend to wear color to daytime things (current favorite: a coral thick silk Nicole Farhi dress).

Viscose and polyester are tricky. The former gets strange marks from water (change of color and sheen), the latter is sweaty.

I always make bad purchases if I have to buy something in a hurry. Searching for something specific when pressed for time is a nightmare. That's why I prefer to buy when I see the right dress even if I don't know yet where I will wear it.

Hopefully · 12/10/2012 13:17

I didn't even realise I'd bolded you twice! Grin

Love that AW skirt.

I am having a bit of a wardrobe flap as I need (like really need) more things than I can afford, and am struggling to prioritise. The important ones are phenomenally dull, like a waterproof coat (what the heck can I get? Needs to be mid-thigh length. Maybe a Barbour? Not a Merrell Wakefield, before anyone dares to suggest it).

Hopefully · 12/10/2012 13:22

Maybe this and get a layer to go underneath. I hate hot coats, as I walk so much I end up shedding them and having the hassle of carrying, so separate layers would be better I reckon.

Popcornia I am exactly the opposite - I hate hoods with a passion, and don't like the line they give coats on me. I am a brolly connoisseur though Wink

Am in South Molton St. I actually think Wolford might be the most dangerous place for my card.

In to Maje... And swoon at electric blue. No time to try on, will have to come back!

And back here to catch up
