Six Item or Less Challenge - What would you choose?

Has anyone ever done it? A basic summary here for those who haven't heard of it.

I did it, more or less, a couple of years ago and really enjoyed it. The simplicity of not having to decide what to wear was really liberating actually. I had a pair of good fitting jeans, some black trousers, a red vest top, a slouchy grey cardigan, a white button-up shirt and a black jumper.

I'm thinking about doing it again, but need a new wardrobe as in the past 2 years I either wore the above items to death and wore them out, am sick of them, or put on weight and they don't fit properly.

What would you choose for your six items? Links would be lovely, to give me some ideas for shopping for myself.

Ah, I've found a blog where the idea started: thesixitemschallenge.wordpress.com/

I think I would break the rules within a week let alone a month!

AndiMac · 30/08/2012 16:45

Well, you do have to want to do it!

It gave me a clear conscience to go and buy relatively expensive (for me) jeans, cardigan and jumper because I knew I would be getting a lot of use out of them in just one month plus future wear. And I read about several fashionistas who normally wouldn't wear the same outfit in one year, never mind in one month, doing it, including this male stylist: robertballew.com/tag/six-items-or-less/ who very kindly gave me some ideas of what else to buy for the challenge.

The other thing it did was make me use my accessories a lot more, which often spend a lot of time collecting dust rather than getting used.

I'm looking at this top from Mint Velvet: Grey Lace Long-sleeve Top

I'd be washing every day as i get covered in snot/food and by the end of the month everything would be worn out. Don't think it's an easy task for a sahm mum of 3!

AndiMac · 30/08/2012 16:58

I'm a SAHM mum to 2, but it was a 3yo and breast-feeding 1yo last time I did it. It was actually not too bad, as it meant I didn't have loads of other washing to do for me, so I just made sure the items I chose were washable and made it into any load I needed them.
(And I've read about others cheating slightly by having 2 pairs of the exact same item to help with the washing issue)

I guess it would be a fairly pointless thing for me to do as I have lots of clothes and there wouldn't be much point in not wearing them. I would be better off doing a 'wear something different every day for a month' challenge!

DonaAna · 30/08/2012 17:45

Love the idea and could easily do it for a week.
I'd wear the things that I wear anyway right now:
MJ chambray tee
D&G boucle jacket
Zara neon coral jacket
7FAM Roxanne skinnies
Sixtyseven pseudo Acne boots
DvF watermelon silk blouse

AndiMac · 30/08/2012 17:48

If it's from clothes you already own, that's a good idea too! I couldn't do it, as despite having lots of clothes, much of it is either a) out of fashion b) no longer fits c) is meant for someone much younger who gets to go out lots at night.

I did do a good clear after the first challenge and have just started another, but somehow the clothes still build up...

DonaAna, nice list! But you can change your boots and shoes as much as you like, they don't count to your six items. The six items are only the base clothing items, not underwear, not footwear. So you get one more choice.

maybenow · 30/08/2012 17:58

hmm - unless i was going to do laundry every two days i'd have to pick one pair of straight-leg jeans and five clean tshirts/shirts (sort of what wear anyway - shirts/tshirts vary from sporty casual though to work-shirt smart Smile)

Hopefully · 30/08/2012 18:32

Haven't read links, but what a fab idea! I would choose:

Me & Em cap sleeved ruched dress
Spendid long sleeve layering t-shirt
Splendid racer back vest
Teal jersey pencil skirt
blazer of some description
leather leggings

Both the last two items are on my A/W shopping list, so don't actually exist yet. My shoe options would probably consist of suede ankle boots, flat sandals, nude pumps and biker boots.

AndiMac · 30/08/2012 18:41

maybenow, I do something similar too, although probably put it up to 2 pairs of trousers to stop me from getting too tired of jeans.

Hopefully, I love your list! I haven't worn leather anything on my legs since last century (and it really should stay that way in my current form) so I can't steal you list, but I love that Me & Em dress.

Oh, and I forgot to link to this: 13 Items, 31 Looks to show it can be done. 2 of the linked items are shoes, so that's only 11 items to have a different look every day of the month.

Like that one too andi. I am such a capsule wardrobe addict.

AndiMac · 30/08/2012 20:09

It just makes life easier, doesn't it? I like this peplum top, but it's dry-clean only, which strikes it off the wish list. But I could see that over top of a light grey or white top that could also be worn on its own.

OP posts:
Hopefully · 30/08/2012 20:41

Ooh, that would be a good capsule wardrobe top. Dry cleaning aside, obvs.

I am really looking forward to sorting and paring down my wardrobe next week (have just moved house, necessitating unpacking everything, so a good time to do it). It's already fairly limited, but I know there are a few bits that are getting a bit tired/I need to part with.

DonaAna · 30/08/2012 20:53

Ooh do I get one more item?
That would be my MJ peplum top. White or navy? Can't decide.
I love them, so versatile.
Hopefully love your list.
Ideally my list would include dresses too but it's not bare legs weather around here any more.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 30/08/2012 21:12

I'd get v bored I think but this is what I'd have:

Vivienne Westwood black jersey dress
Black cowl neck top - Hobbs
Vivienne Westwood charcoal tweedy draped skirt
Black cigarette trousers - yet to find perfect ones
Grey slouchy t-shirt - yet to find perfect one
Black tux jacket - yet to find perfect one

V annoying as most things would have to be suitable for work and I'd get sick of the jacket very quickly.

AndiMac · 30/08/2012 23:06

I don't know if I want a dress on my list. I bought a couple from Phase Eight in the sales, and one that would do for autumn. And I know it's one piece that I can then wear on its own, but somehow it takes away some of the flexibility in the six items somehow. Not sure I'm making sense, or even if I believe myself, now that I've written it down. Hmm Well, this is the dress I'm thinking about, for what it's worth.

OP posts:
Hopefully · 31/08/2012 07:08

I put the Me & Em on mine because I can casual it down with a LS tshirt underneath and suede ankle boots. Wrap dress slightly harder though, although good for work...

DonaAna · 31/08/2012 07:18

Many dresses, such as simple shifts, work extremely well under jackets and even shirts for a more casual take. I'm not including any because it's nude sheer tights weather here.

AmberNectarine · 31/08/2012 09:16

remus I saw a fab black single button Reiss tuxedo jacket in TK Maxx yesterday for £60.

AndiMac · 31/08/2012 10:06

Yeah, a shift dress is more variable for sure. But wrap dresses suit me better, which is why probably I won't put a dress in my six items.

OP posts:
RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 31/08/2012 10:25

Thanks Amber - will try and brave TK Maxx!

I put my VW dress in because it is v v simple and I can wear it under a jacket for work, on its own for evenings out, or layered over a long sleeved t-shirt etc with boots for casual wear. It is a thing of wonder!

Hopefully · 31/08/2012 10:40

Remus I find my Me&Em dress is the same - have worn to a black tie wedding with killer heels, casual dinner out with friends with ankle boots and LS tshirt underneath and for work with a jacket and nude pumps. Love me a versatile dress so much so that i have two more of them in the post.
