Coconut Oil - more questions!

Northumberlandlass · 24/08/2012 12:59

After reading wonderful things on here on the benefits of coconut oil, i've been looking around. Virgin or not? Organic or not? Are any better than others? Can I just pop into Holland & Barratt?

I'm thinking of using it mostly on hair & skin.
Thanks

Virgin - absolutely
Organic - preferably

Northumberlandlass · 24/08/2012 13:54

Thanks! So the Holland & barratt stuff would be ok?

If it's virgin then yes, just fine!

Northumberlandlass · 24/08/2012 14:07

Thank you!!

you know for sure it's the right kind if it is hard at room temperature and liquid when it gets warm.

Northumberlandlass · 24/08/2012 14:33

Thank you, yes it looks more solid (not clear)

H&B normally v expensive though.

I use this

and I use it for OCM, body moisturiser, intensive hair treatment (overnight, drench hair and put in a top-knot, doesn't stain pillowcases), as an after-sun, for lips, cuticles, heels.

PlumSykes · 24/08/2012 15:37

The Superdrug one gets v good reviews.

lairymum99 · 24/08/2012 15:42

Waitrose - this one is lovely and cheap

I also use Coconoil for cooking, or just slathering on. Yum

SunWukong · 24/08/2012 15:42

I'm just using the KTC one from the Asian section of the supermarket, 250ml bottle for under £2 or 500ml tub for £3 something, if it's edible then it must be fine for soaking into your skin.

Pinot · 24/08/2012 16:05

not sure about the waitrose one as it has added ingredients - I use the pure stuff. the superdrug and KTC ones sound v cheap :) :)

BonkeyMollocks · 24/08/2012 16:07

I have bought the superdrug one today for £1 something.

How do you use it on your hair? Overnight job?

Pinot · 24/08/2012 16:09

Yep overnight

BonkeyMollocks · 24/08/2012 16:10

Thanks :)

NigellasGuest · 24/08/2012 16:29

I buy it from Amazon

Northumberlandlass · 24/08/2012 16:38

Brill! Top tips, will check them out. Thanks. Will have a look at superdrug one

Have just seen Tesco's have some in their Asian cookery section (virgin) - might check that out tomorrow!

I use this 99p one. Once it's run out I'd like to try a virgin one.

WoodlandHills · 26/08/2012 19:35

I buy mine on Ebay. I recently got a 1kg tub of extra virgin, cold pressed coconut oil for about a tenner.

Its brill stuff.

vnmum · 28/08/2012 10:38

Isn't coconut oil comodegenic if used on skin? I am sure i have read on some ocm sites that after a while of using it people started getting bad spots and hard ones under the skin and the replies were that coconut oil shouldn't be used on face as it can cause this. I quite fancied trying it as ocm instead of my normal oil but after reading this decided not to

AmberLeaf · 28/08/2012 10:45

Definitely not comodegenic.

Use a virgin organic one. the KTC is not good the cheap ones are cheap for a reason!

squoosh · 28/08/2012 11:28

Everything I've read says that coconut oil is comodegenic. Personally I'd use it everywhere except my face.

comedogenic ratings

vnmum · 28/08/2012 11:37

Interesting link squoosh, thanks.

NigellasGuest · 28/08/2012 12:10

I think it depends on the individual person.
I personally have not had a problem with it, but some people do. I've found this article which I would say gives a realistic view.

squoosh · 28/08/2012 12:12

I definitely want to start trying it in my food.

Mirand Kerr claims it's her top beauty secret. Do you think cocounut oil will give me supermodel legs? Smile
