Hair dye question

SPsFanjoSponsorsTheOlympics · 12/08/2012 17:47

I have dark purple hair. What colour is my hair likely to turn if put a bright red on it?

I tried google but it was no use. I'm going out Saturday night and my hair needs dying but don't want to it to turn out horrible.

Anyone???

As you're putting it over dark purple I'd anticipate a dark red, rather than a bright red. I can't imagine it would turn it anything horrendous, though.

SPsFanjoSponsorsTheOlympics · 12/08/2012 19:34

I'm just worried it will go pink or something Grin

ScumbagCollegeDropout · 13/08/2012 05:34

Are they box dyes or semi-permanent vegie dyes (aka Directions/Manic Panic)?

ScumbagCollegeDropout · 13/08/2012 05:35

Urgh meant 'e.g' of course.

ScarletLadyOfTheNight01 · 13/08/2012 09:45

I was going to ask what Scumbag did - the result will depend entirely on what type of dye you use. Semi-perm will just add a reddish tint, if you're lucky. Box dye may make it go properly red depending on the base. What is the purple? Semi perm on bleach, or box dye?

SPsFanjoSponsorsTheOlympics · 13/08/2012 12:38

It's a box dye. Xl live one if that helps.

SPsFanjoSponsorsTheOlympics · 13/08/2012 12:39

Purple is also a box dye from same dye company.

I wouldn't go there. You will probably end up with maroon hair with bright red root glow.

You need to strip the old colour out with bleach first.

ScarletLadyOfTheNight01 · 13/08/2012 15:30

Ah Ok. I went from Red to Purple using those dyes with no problems, but obviously I was putting the darker colour on top. To be honest, stripping the colour out with bleach, and then putting another box dye on won't do your hair any favours. You'd need to leave a gap in between and try and condition the hell out of it, which will probably mean you'll go through a couple of weeks of being orange...obviously if you're looking to do it for the weekend then that's out of the question.

It MAY end up uneven (as Queenie says), but it may be totally fine. If you've only ever used box dyes and your hair has never been bleached, it's less likely to end up uneven. It won't go pink (I THINK - please don't take my word as gospel). What I'd do is give it a go, and get a couple of pots of something semi-perm (Directions or something) in a darker red (Cherry or Tulip type colours) to cover it if you're not happy with the colour. Even if it does go pink...pink is awesome!

But then I've done pretty much everything you can do with home-colouring so I'm more open to disaster and how to do damage limitation Grin

CaptainHetty · 13/08/2012 15:40

I'd avoid bleaching - not only because if you do it yourself over dark hair you'll probably end up with an uneven yellow/orange mixture with very blonde roots which will look delightful, but also because putting bleach and then another permanent dye on your hair is, as Scarlett says, really not going to do your hair any favours. The roots might end up a slightly different colour, yes - it depends what colour your roots are.

I can't imagine it will go pink. Like Scarlett I've used those dyes but only ever put purple on top of red, which worked fine. I'm pretty sure it's just going to turn it a dark red - how dark will depend on the depth of the purple you're putting it over.

SPsFanjoSponsorsTheOlympics · 13/08/2012 21:11

Thank you!

I'm.going to attempt it tomorrow night.

I have never bleached my hair before. I have been orange for a couple of days though after putting blonde on.

I've done red to purple before and it went dark purple. I'm ready for a change.

Let us know how you get on. If you think about it, all box dyes (well nearly all) work on a principle of pre-lightening hair and then adding colour. The pre-lightener will lift some (the amount will vary) of the purple and then it will deposit the red. Worst way, I think you can expect a darkish, blue-toned red. Best way, it will just go red and be fine. Either way it should look perfectly fine.

Watching this with interest...
I am fellow currently-purpleish-wannabe-red like Jodie Marsh

SPsFanjoSponsorsTheOlympics · 13/08/2012 23:17

I will update tomorrow once its done.

It's my first night our into town in about a year and I'm single so my hair could define weather I leave town with any numbers or not Grin

I don't think you will notice much difference. The peroxide strength will probably not be strong enough to lift a dark purple, eg if the dark purple is a base shade 4 or 5 and the red is base shade 6, it won't lift. it may just give it a slight reddish glow. It will work on any regrowth though, so if you have roots they will end up a different colour to the rest of your hair.

SPsFanjoSponsorsTheOlympics · 13/08/2012 23:49

I don't know what base shade is.

I just buy a box of dye and stick it onGrin

Ooh, Fanjo's going on the pull!

Sounds like you have a very similar attitude to hair dye as I do! (You'd think by now I'd have a rough idea what I'm doing, but no...)

Good luck, look forward to the update (on hair colour & number acquisition) Wink

SPsFanjoSponsorsTheOlympics · 14/08/2012 07:43

hippy I have been dying my hair from a box for the past 3/4 year. I have been every colour near enough and yet don't have a clue. I just stick it on and hope for the best.

I randomly decide I want to change colour too and its worked out fine but because I'm going out Sat I wanted to double check.

I will be updating tonight on my hair and Sunday on my huge amount of numbers Grin

I get bored SO easily and have been pretty much every colour apart from brown. I recently decided to bleach out my permanent red, which has been fun. I was nuclear ginge for a while but I'm nearly at my desired shade of white. It's taken about 3 months of bleaching, conditioning and bleach baths though...I think my hair hates me >_

ScumbagCollegeDropout · 14/08/2012 12:19

Okay.

If I were you I would buy a colour remover such as Jo Bazz or Colour B4.

It stinks but is less harsh than bleaching and should strip the purple out of your hair. It will turn to an orangy brown colour but that is because the box dyes (especially the LiveXXL ones) all use peroxide. So you have actually been bleaching your hair every time you have dyed your hair.

Because the box dyes do contain peroxide it is recommended to wash your hair a few times after using ColorB4 to make sure that the product has left your hair.

I recently used Jo Bazz to strip my hair of many, many months of using boxed black dyes. Worked a treat. I then did a Bleach Bath which is a lot less harsh than direct bleaching but the result was still good.

My hair is currently similar to this. But this was with a semi-permanent dye.

I just bleach bath my roots when they need doing.

lentilweavinghippy · 14/08/2012 14:11

That colour is GORGEOUS Dropout! Think I might be a bit old tho :-/

ScarletLadyOfTheNight01 · 14/08/2012 14:31

That is the ideal way Scumbag (LOVE that red...what is it?), although I'm not sure she'd be able to do all that by the weekend. I've known people have their hair destroyed by colour strippers (it's VERY drying), and I'd be nervous about putting a permanent colour on top so quickly.

It might be completely fine. When I stripped, I chose to use bleach after tons of research, but that's because I was stripping reds etc (I've heard many stories of it being difficult to strip out red completely, it usually stays orange) and wanted to go white so I would have HAD to use bleach at some point anyway.

I went from this...(Live XXL Red)

To this...(stuck a load of bleach, and then banged on a semi-perm pink to let it recover as it was a hideous mish-mash of peach, orange and yellow)

And it's currently this colour after a couple more bleaches...still a little peachy in the mid-lengths but I'll get there. I rue the day I decided to stick red on my perfect white hair when I was pregnant
