How fab is Mint Velvet?

I've never shopped there before but I've just been looking at their website and I could buy everything!

All the black/neutrals look so smart and stylish, the antithesis of brightly coloured Boden!

Any MV fans out there? Before I spend a fortune, is there anything in particular I should go for? Their trousers and jeans look good and I like a lot of their tops too.

It's grey. Very grey. Every season. Grey.
And no skirts. And some bordering on per una territory.

However they do nice tops

Sorry but I'm not wild about the quality of the clothes - lots of viscose which can be tricky to keep looking good. They charge a lot for some very thin dresses too. I once ordered some shoes and they arrived filthy and broken - I got my money back but no-one bothered to apologise or explain.

That said, I'm wearing one of their stripy T shirts today and that's been ok. Nothing special though.

CMOTDibbler · 01/08/2012 09:46

Occasionally I see something nice, but otherwise its all v depressing

dexter73 · 01/08/2012 09:51

It's ok but I never like it enough to actually buy any of their stuff.

PerryCombover · 01/08/2012 11:43

Bored

NanAstley · 01/08/2012 12:29

I bought a stripy grey (natch) tee from them last month. On the first wear it developed a hole on the sleeve. I wore it one more time as I figured the hole was not noticeable. This time, it formed a massive hole near the neckline. I was not wearing any jewellery which could be blamed. I wrote to Mint Velvet and received no reply. Returned the tee to John Lewis and got a refund back.

Will never buy from them (MV, not JL) again.

AphraBehn · 01/08/2012 12:33

Their designs are nice but sizing is inconsistent and the quality isn't always great considering the prices.
I've ordered 3 or 4 things from them but only kept 1.

Dancergirl · 01/08/2012 12:39

Oh dear, sounds like their quality and customer service isn't great.

Agree that MV is very very grey and in poor quality fabrics. I'm sure I read before on here that it used to be Principles? Which I think says it all...

wanttomakeadifference · 01/08/2012 13:23

I bought a pair of 3/4 trousers from them, a pale blue coat and a white T. I've worn them all loads and been pretty impressed.

I'm a bit disappointed to see a so little colour in the winter range though.

noddyholder · 01/08/2012 13:25

I love the look of it but the quality isn't great. Agree it has gone a bit per una. Prefer toast but v expensive

Dancergirl · 03/08/2012 17:40

Well I went to one of their stores the other day, tried on loads but only bought one item: black 3/4 length zip jeggings which fit perfectly and can be worn with loads. And some sunglasses. Tops were ok but you were all right about the quality!

RSVPentathlon · 03/08/2012 17:48

It's one of these brands that I want to like because I like the name
but never been able to find one item for me.
Either the quality does not feel great for the price or colours are too boring

CaroleService · 03/08/2012 17:50

In the early days, I bought loads (so did Miss Beehiving!), inc a fab shearling aviator jacket.

Then they went grey and downmarket. Have bought nothing this season and one thing in the winter sale.

SpringGoddess · 03/08/2012 17:51

Have found it too boring - lots of pastels last season, lots of black this season - nothing seems to stand out.

MissBeehivingUnderTheMistletoe · 03/08/2012 19:54

God, I love that jacket Carole Grin probably more than my children but haven't bought anything from them for at least a year.

CaroleService · 03/08/2012 22:01

Where do you buy instead, Miss B? ('tis Mumsnut btw)

MissBeehivingUnderTheMistletoe · 04/08/2012 06:32

Mmm...all over the place Massimo Dutti, Gap, Uniqlo, Great Plains, Dotty P, Zara, Cos, French Connection, Warehouse. I did love that slouchy/luxe style they did in the first couple of seasons which they don't seem to do anymore. Sad I didn't mind that it was all greyish Grin. I don't really suit fuss and like simplicity.

What about you Carole?

anniewoo · 04/08/2012 08:45

I thought Mint Velvet was founded by 3 mums. Tis even more expensive in Ireland cos of the euro. Sad

LaBelleDamesansTurkey · 04/08/2012 08:51

It's all so dull.

Ameliagrey · 04/08/2012 10:48

I like it because it's my colour palette- grey, not the beige.

Only got a couple of things, but like them. Don't do frilly, but they have the occasional piece of nice knitwear, tunics and coats.

Don't get the comments about quality- what exactly do you mean? Most fabrics are silk or wool mix, and not exactly falling apart at the seams after one wear!

Agree they are over priced but I wait until there's a 20% discount code around- often with W&H or another glossy mag.

CaroleService · 04/08/2012 11:42

Cheers MissB. Let's see: LK Bennett, some Fenn Wright and Manson (tailored work dresses not frou frou stuff), Massimo Dutti thanks to DMBL40IT. Mostly I have been buying handbags though, since they always fit and I am trying to lose LOTS of weight.

Dancergirl · 04/08/2012 11:48

I think I vaguely remember the aviator jacket but they had sold out Sad

Does anyone have a picture of it?
