.....but we are still Stylish (if not Beautiful).

BTM, it was optional at that stage (the rather fabulous German head of MFL told me), for the gurls who'd done fairly well in languages to date. It's the compulsoriness that took me aback Grin

Cremolafoam · 05/09/2012 21:31

I have to say I found Latin tremendously useful as I did French and Spanish. It has given me a lifelong interest in the origins of words. Having Latin really helps you recognise unfamiliar foreign words.Grin

motherinferior · 05/09/2012 21:40

BTW this is my friends' little girl. Her father is a photographer. They played it at the funeral. Very lovely.

Cremolafoam · 05/09/2012 21:42

MI - how unbearably heartbreaking...

herbaceous · 06/09/2012 10:33

Oh MI, I'm bawling my eyes out. How unbearable. Her parents must be incredible.

Was at the paralympics yesterday, thanks to a friend giving me her tickets she couldn't use. Blubbed there, too. And happened upon some old friends, down for the event from Yorkshire. Amazing. We hung out in a quiet spot, in the sun, and all was well with the world.

Ds's first day in new Junior school went fine, brought someone home after school to play, only downer - no internet!

He seems very happy and pleased with the change. Although lunch was a bit meh...

I would like to have done Latin....

Cremolafoam · 06/09/2012 11:22

Lol issy that was my textbook too! Can't believe they're still using it.
Also remember Ecce Romani!
'Sextus et Flavia in Horta sunt '
Lol
Well done all brave mummies getting over the first day hurdles.

I am looking at finances this am. Dd has a Berlin trip coming up and I sort of forgot about it. [ balance to pay - eek!]
Had a bit of a spend this morning at uniqlo. New orla kiely items on sale this morning. Got several stoles as Xmas presents ( investment) and a ls t shirt for me - liked the pattern but hope I don't look like a tablecloth .

herbaceous · 06/09/2012 11:59

I'm humming and hawing over the Orla Kiely stuff. Quite fancy a new hoody, but they're pretty pricey at £30. And the nice ones have sold out already. A scarf could be a good compromise...

My mum has given me a cheque from a windfall she received. She wants me to put it in DS's trust fund... I think I'll put MOST of it in the trust fund, and maybe buy myself an investment item. A bag, perhaps...

TheReturnOfStropperella · 06/09/2012 12:48

I am a bit Hmm about those Orla Kiely dresses. They remind of some very unlovely maternity smocks sported by my teacher when I was in Year 3 (as it wasn't known back in the early 70s).

I realise that you will probably cast me into outer darkness for mentioning La Redoute once let alone twice in a few days, but I feel I must mention that this is a good company to buy from if one is feeling a little .. plump. I had to return a jumper that I bought in a size 10 because it was too huge and get a size 6-8. And no, not American sizes apparently, just vanity sizing taken to a new and somewhat ridiculous level. Although I perfectly well know this, I still feel perkier. Grin

I also perfectly well know that if I time-travelled back to the mid-80s I would have to buy a size 12-14 in most things. Hmm

TheReturnOfStropperella · 06/09/2012 12:51

"remind me"

CointreauVersial · 06/09/2012 13:04

Cerberus est canis......The fact that the Latin textbook hasn't changed in 30+ years says something about the language, eh? "First it killed the Romans, now it's killing me."

DS and DD1's school is a "Specialist Langauge College", but languages of the Modern variety, thank goodness. They had to start French and German pretty much from scratch in Y7, and I think DS's head would have exploded if he had had to do Latin as well.

Ooh, I didn't know Uniqlo are doing Orla Kiely again! I missed out last time, but ended up buying a gorgeous leaf-print scarf on eBay from Japan, which was considerably cheaper than buying from one of those freeloading scum enterprising individuals in the UK who buy up the entire shop on Day 1 and flog it on eBay for inflated prices.

Strops - I'm a La Redoute fan, although my purchasing from there does go in phases. I like the fact that if you need to return something and order a different size and style they don't charge for the second lot of postage. Which is handy, because the sizing is, as you say, somewhat eccentric.

OP posts:
herbaceous · 06/09/2012 13:04

The OK dresses would look Utterly Hideous on me, hanging vastly from my DDs, bypassing my waist, and possibly clinging to the arse. I do like Uniqlo, but they seem to design most of their clothes for straight-up-and-downs. The Japanese business, I suppose...

CointreauVersial · 06/09/2012 13:12

The scarves are cute, though. But I have an out-of-control scarf habit and DH has threatened divorce if I buy any more.

I need a decent place to store them all - never mind those cute little scarf hangers - I need an item of furniture.

OP posts:
Cremolafoam · 06/09/2012 13:23

Cv I am in the scarf obsessive category too. Dh absolutely despairs plus I wear a blimmin'uniform most days do my actually scarf wearing is limited.
Agree the ok smocks are scary and do not know who exactly they are designed for but it sure as hell ain't me.
Also like la redoute tbh. However delivery is always a disaster to mt address( this is the delivery people not la redoute) but complaining pleading and shouting has never made things any better in all the years .
It makes me not want to order from themSad
But I do like the coats and shoes especially Smile

Cremolafoam · 06/09/2012 13:25

Oh and we are coming close to the end of this thread hags..........

TheReturnOfStropperella · 06/09/2012 13:32

CV, I have 2 large underbed storage boxes for my scarves and am perilously close to needing a third. Grin

MrsSchadenfreude · 06/09/2012 15:14

I secrete my scarves in several places so that DH doesn't know exactly how many I have. But they are compulsory in Paris.

I did Cambridge Latin Course as well (Metella est in triclinio) and a book called Via Vertendi. I didn't actually do my O level as my teacher ran off with my art teacher. (I didn't do art O level or CSE either, but that was to do with my lack of ability rather than anything else.)

I have some exciting style and beauty news for you, Hags. Cindy Crawford is doing a range for C & A. I particularly want you to know that everything in it is a) hideous and b) either acrylic or polyester. And it doesn't look good on her either. Grin

I have had an awful day at work, have a 6.00 start tomorrow and am knackered.
