Red Lipstick

Is there such a thing as a red lip colour that suits any skin tone?

I want to try red but it scares me. Can anyone recommend a good starter? I have dark hair/eyes and medium skin.

Thanks

Ruby woo by mac is highly recommended by lots of people. There s a great sali Hughes utube on applying red lippy and how to choose a red colour shade - she recommends ruby woo as a one that suits nearly everyone and good to start with - if you google her and her u tube clips you ll get it. Sali Hughes also recommended a Kate Moss Rimmel in shade 01 a couple of weeks ago. I bought it despite my dislike of rattty ol' KM, and it's really good, my sister and I both bought it, and it suits us both, we have very different colouring.

I shall be watching this thread.

I have dark brown, almost black hair, pale skin and i've never been able to find a red lipstick that suits me.

I actually don't think it's all down to skin tone and hair colour though. I think it's about facial features too. For example, I have quite a round nose and find that when I wear red, it makes my nose look bigger than when I wear a different colour.

Chanel's Coco Rouge was a range designed for people "new" to lipstick so the colours are softer and more subtle than their regular range. Try Rouge Orage. It is my "everyday" red and is beautifully soft and moisturising. You need lips in tip-top condition to wear red successfully :)

slug · 16/07/2012 10:24

This is the only red lipstick I've ever felt comfortable wearing.

Thanks for suggestions! slug, yr link is bringing up the Space NK homepage...

The Kate Moss one is good if you have sallow skin.

slug · 16/07/2012 12:10

Hmm, sorry, it's the Lipstick Queen Medeival colour though the image on this site doesn't render.

DonaAna · 16/07/2012 12:24

Rouge Orage is great.
I love Chanel lipsticks.

monkeysmama · 16/07/2012 12:34

I love the Nars matt crayons. Pop life & red square are vibrant brighten your face up colours.

I have very dark hair, very dark eyes and pale (but not milky pale) skin. I wear Ladybug by Mac and I love it - beautifully soft colour, doesn't dry your lips. Doesn't bleed either. Hope you find one you like.

badtasteflump · 16/07/2012 12:51

I was once recommended the shade 'Macao' by Chanel and I love it. It's a lovely soft red which isn't too 'in your face' the way some reds are - I can wear it during the day without looking too Shock

noddyholder · 16/07/2012 13:30

I have a dark orange red Laura Mercier gloss which is not too scary and very flattering its called heat wave

coffeeinbed · 16/07/2012 13:44

I have a bit of a fetish for red lipstick. Current count a dozen or so.

Nars have a brilliant range - Gypsy is sheer and gorgeous and easy to wear.
Chanel are also good, lots of proper reds, in many different formulation.
Passion and Cambon are my faves there.

Max Factor pens are stain-y and a good starter red.
The Revlon Lip butter have a nice bright red.
Poppy King has a range for Boots 7 - give that a try.

aquavit · 16/07/2012 14:38

my favourite easy red is a chanel coco rouge shine - monte carlo

the reds in the original coco rouge range are also great and it's a fabulous formulation

Been looking at Lisa Eldridge on YouTube. Love that Lady Danger she wears but think I'd need to work up to that. She uses an Inglot lip pencil in shade 21 and it looks like a good starter.

Everything recommended here so far looks amazing! Smile

Oh I can't even look at Lisa Eldridge! She's so bloody perfect, I feel like it doesn't matter what advice she gives me, i'm never going to look half as good as her!Envy Grin

Went to Boots and got a Rimmel Kate Moss lippie in No12. Quite orangey-red. Looks good but smells a bit odd, tbh.

Also rifled through make up and found another Rimmel in Diva Red!

Thanks again for assistance! Grin

The bourjois ones are good. They do loads of reds, all slightly different. So you could go in and see which one suits you best. They are long lasting and creamy.

MooMinCow · 17/07/2012 20:52

Revlon do some fab lippies in their 'Super Lustrous' line. 'Fire & Ice' is kinda orangy retro red and 'Revlon Red' is more blue toned I think. I think they are really good quality and value for money - feel lovely on lips and good staying power.

Barry M do a couple of nice red shades but they are more of a matte finish I think.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 17/07/2012 23:32

I bought a couple of Body Shop reds (can't remember the shade) but they were so dry.
They were draggy to put on and made my rather ungenerous mouth ( in the words of my DBro "like a dogs' bum Hmm ) look all puckered.

Sad
cocolepew · 17/07/2012 23:38

I might have a look at that Revlon one. Id like a blue toned one. Best red lipstick I ever had was from Next, about a hundred years ago! It was the perfect shade for my skin tone.

FuckerSnailInYourHedgerow · 17/07/2012 23:41

The KM one is good on me and I'm pale and freckly. It's a magic lipstick that suits everyone:)

cocolepew · 17/07/2012 23:45

I wore the KM in no1 and DH said it drained all the colour out if my face (git). He never notices anything so I thought it must (though I havent been well and I'm a bit Casper atm)

FuckerSnailInYourHedgerow · 17/07/2012 23:51

Well DS told me to take it off, but he's two and what does he know? I do need to wear a bit of blusher with red lipstick anyway, otherwise I look like death.
