Dress for dd who lives in shorts, band t shirts and Converse. Impossible?

Have a wedding coming up. I'm sorted (unless I change my mind) and dd1 will be a pleasure to shop with (although perhaps not a pleasure on the bank account). DD2 however, is a different prospect...

What can I suggest as a starting point please? She's 15 and probably a size 10 with an hourglass figure and biggish boobs - thinks she's 'fat' but is not. V indie in her style. Suits blues/reds but likes blacks/greys/burgundy. Has bright red (coloured) hair. Would probably only contemplate a dress if it was a mini and could be worn with black opaques!

Please help!

Oh and no 'goth' or Vivian of Holloway style stuff - she looked horrified at the thought.

does it have to be a dress, will it be very formal?

SecretNutellaFix · 25/06/2012 20:49

This any good?

ATruthUniversallyAcknowledged · 25/06/2012 20:52

Would she go for something a bit 'retro'?

Like this ? Depending on the bride, it could even be teamed with a pair of converse.

hellhasnofurylikeahungrywoman · 25/06/2012 20:52

Does Joe Brown's still exist? Dd's Indie friend loved their clothes

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 25/06/2012 20:55

Thanks. What could it be if it isn't a dress though? Think it will be a fairly traditional day. I think she'd quite like the pattern of the New Look one but she would worry about her chest looking big. Will show it to her though.

Wonder if she could get away with some sort of shorts suit or playsuit or something?

Oh bugger, just read the 'Vivian of Holloway' bit (I didn't know what that meant but googled it Blush )

Not sure of your budget, but could she be persuaded into a dress if it was a Jack Wills Dress ?

FWIW, I'm getting married this summer and if someone's teenage daughter turns up in a band t-shirt and cons I wouldn't be in the least bit bothered. Are you sure she needs a dress?

ZZZenAgain · 25/06/2012 20:57

would she wear trousers with a top?

BelleTheBeatnik · 25/06/2012 20:57

Red

Red but perhaps too girly?

Navy

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 25/06/2012 20:57

The 50s style ones are great but she has totally refused to contemplate anything like that and I suspect they'd swamp her length-wise anyway. She doesn't like Joe Browns stuff - too surfy. Arghhhh!

OP posts:
BelleTheBeatnik · 25/06/2012 20:59

Or this?

TheWoollybacksWife · 25/06/2012 21:01

Is something like this her style? It would look lovely with black opaques and clunky heels. Only doubt is the polyester chiffon being a bit sweaty for a summer wedding?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 25/06/2012 21:03

The Jack Wills one is pretty but way too much money for a little cotton dress (and I think the quality seems pretty shoddy there sometimes too). In any case, she's not really a 'Jack Wills' kind of girl - too cutesy.

The navy bird print one is lovely - but she'd be put off by the cut out back. She is horribly self conscious, even though she's lovely!

What kind of trousers and top might work?

Budget? No idea! Depends if it turns out to be something she would wear again or not, I guess. No more than 60 tops though, then shoes etc.

Hollister have some fairly cool dresses and play suits. Most teenagers don't have to be forced into Hollister as I understand it.

BelleTheBeatnik · 25/06/2012 21:05

Tailored shorts with a nice top?

SecretNutellaFix · 25/06/2012 21:08

too bright?

BelleTheBeatnik · 25/06/2012 21:09

Would she wear a little navy cardigan or wrap over the dress?

Red and blue but with no cut-outs!

She would need to be dragged kicking and screaming into Hollister - there is no way in this world she would go there voluntarily! :)

No to the polyester tunic thing - too 'old' for her, I think and she doesn't/wouldn't wear heels. Also, as an hourglass I think it would make her look a lot bigger than she is.

The tailored shorts are brilliant - do you think she could get away with something like those?

My sister recently bought this for a wedding. She's a reformed indie girl. I thought it was quite funky, and pretty but not in a very "girly" way.

PrincessOfChina · 25/06/2012 21:23

Fair enough, there has to be an exception to prove the rule :)

Tailored shorts are a lovely idea, with a camisole top and neat cardigan and some nice pumps.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 25/06/2012 21:24

I have looked at the Firetrap one before, for me! D2 hated it - too long, too flouncy, too patterned. I think it's great!

I think she might be persuaded to try on the red/blue butterfly one, perhaps. So far though, I think the shorts are going to be the most popular suggestion. How would she wear something like those? Little blazer? Ballet flats?
