Dress for dd who lives in shorts, band t shirts and Converse. Impossible?

Have a wedding coming up. I'm sorted (unless I change my mind) and dd1 will be a pleasure to shop with (although perhaps not a pleasure on the bank account). DD2 however, is a different prospect...

What can I suggest as a starting point please? She's 15 and probably a size 10 with an hourglass figure and biggish boobs - thinks she's 'fat' but is not. V indie in her style. Suits blues/reds but likes blacks/greys/burgundy. Has bright red (coloured) hair. Would probably only contemplate a dress if it was a mini and could be worn with black opaques!

Please help!

desigual sale

I was a bit of an indie kid too and I've always liked Desigual. It's what a lot of the arty types in Barcelona were wearing in a drapey, too cool for school fashion.

Some if it is mumsy and awful but there's some great wee dresses there

example

Most would look fab dressed up or even with a pair of jeans under and some chucks/docs. At least you know she'd get the wear out of it!

Death kitty do some amazing stuff, love their clothes www.deathkitty.co.uk/tops.php

mrscumberbatch · 25/06/2012 21:29

Death kitty is gothy though- not op's daughter's thang

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 25/06/2012 21:31

Deffo no to Desigual - far too loud/colourful/in your face for her liking! Her version of indie is to wear huge t-shirts/tiny shorts and draw little or no attention to one's clothing at all.

No to Death Kitty too. :)

Maybe try hell bunny? Dd has a gorgeous dress from there - sorry, can't link on my fone

ATruthUniversallyAcknowledged · 25/06/2012 21:37

Maybe we need to approach this from a different angle... these band t-shirts you mentioned... which bands does she like? If we could find one of the singers in an amazing dress, would that convince her it was cool?

MoonlightandRoses · 25/06/2012 21:38

If she'd fit an 8 from Oasis then this one might be a possibility? They are out of stock of 10's at the moment.

Just outside budget but flower graphic.
blue dip-hem
burgundy, short, on-trend and in budget

If there's nothing there to her tastes she's just being difficult Wink

MoonlightandRoses · 25/06/2012 21:40

Oh, doesn't really like pattern or colour? Hmm.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 25/06/2012 21:42

Hell Bunny also goth, non?

Bands = Paramour/All Time Low/Bring Me The Horizon and various ones she calls 'screamo' whatever the heck that is!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 25/06/2012 21:45

Being difficult is what she does best. :)

Think the peplum one is probably too 'grown up' a shape for her - she's not at all into ladylike!

Something like this? m.topshop.com/mt/www.topshop.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?beginIndex=0&viewAllFlag=&catalogId=33057&storeId=12556&productId=5960566&langId=-1&sort_field=Relevance&categoryId=208523&parent_categoryId=203984&pageSize=20

Lots of nice dresses on topshop that aren't too girlie and I would have liked in my indie kid days! I don't think the same rules apply to teens as they do adults attending weddings, so she needn't get anything too formal or grown up. Could just suggest she find something a bit dressier than normal but that she can still be herself. Personally I would let her wear leggings with a dress too if she didn't feel comfortable showing her legs (as I didn't when younger).

mumofjust1 · 25/06/2012 21:48

Remus - my dd is into all the same stuff as yours!

BelleTheBeatnik · 25/06/2012 21:49

That's the look I was thinking of Remus, it's lovely. I think your DD would feel more comfortable in something like that, and you might get some wear out of the different bits seperately?

BelleTheBeatnik · 25/06/2012 21:50

separately Hmm

LemonBreeland · 25/06/2012 21:50

I like the look you've just put up. From what you've described it sounds like she would be more comfortable in shorts, and then at least only part of the outfit is not her style.

ATruthUniversallyAcknowledged · 25/06/2012 21:52

Hm, quick google of those bands revealed a lot of black and scariness and not many dresses!

How uptight is the bride? Is she likely to care if DD isn't in a dress?

I love that pic you found, what does DD think?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 25/06/2012 21:53

Mumofjustone - what would your dd wear to a wedding then? :)

That Topshop one is cute but I suspect she wouldn't like it.

I think that if you lot think it would be okay for her to wear shorts, then shorts might be the way forward. Will show her this thread tomorrow evening and get her verdict (she's not here tonight).

Thanks for all of the ideas so far.

During the period in my late twenties/early thirties, when everyone seemed to be getting married and I needed a new dress every weekend, I once wore tailored shorts and a matching blazer with a blouse, heels and a floppy hat to a wedding! Nobody was fussed. And I'm sure your DD isn't as eccentric as was, so without the killer heels/over-sized hat she'll look perfectly suitable for a wedding and lovely, I'm sure!

DumSpiroSpero · 25/06/2012 22:02

This is 2 years old and way too expensive, but would this kind of thing work do you think?

mrscumberbatch · 25/06/2012 22:02

Does she actually want to dress like Hayley Williams?

She doesn't really dress how I would have imagined for being a screamo fan.

Who is her style icon?

Zooey Deschanel?

nevergoogle · 25/06/2012 22:03
