Dress for dd who lives in shorts, band t shirts and Converse. Impossible?

Have a wedding coming up. I'm sorted (unless I change my mind) and dd1 will be a pleasure to shop with (although perhaps not a pleasure on the bank account). DD2 however, is a different prospect...

What can I suggest as a starting point please? She's 15 and probably a size 10 with an hourglass figure and biggish boobs - thinks she's 'fat' but is not. V indie in her style. Suits blues/reds but likes blacks/greys/burgundy. Has bright red (coloured) hair. Would probably only contemplate a dress if it was a mini and could be worn with black opaques!

Please help!

No to dressing like Hayley W. Style icons = the boys from All Time Low, if anybody - except with shorts instead of jeans. She is a complete tomboy.

Love that Warehouse skirt, though it's probably too pretty for dd's liking.

LOVE that Emma W pic - but dd would think that sort of thing too 'elegant looking' or something, I think.

Never heard of Zooey D - googling now.

Actually, I really like the ASOS outfit you linked to - smart, but hopefully not too far off her usual style. Not that I rebelled and went to a wedding in a greyhound skirt with hooks and eyes the whole way up the back of it, oh no grin.

BetterOnACamel · 25/06/2012 22:38

How about something like this - I'm sure I've seen more affordable versions of this style, just can't remember the outlet at the moment. all saints

scummymummy · 25/06/2012 22:42

Your daughter sounds lovely.:) My son loves All Time Low. This blue banana site looks good.

How about a purple dress?

polka dots- maybe a bit too dressy?

BelleTheBeatnik · 25/06/2012 22:45

OP seems to have disappeared. Is anyone else sensing a Mother-Daughter argument discussion about our suggestions? Grin

mumofjust1 · 25/06/2012 23:36

Remus - dd would plump for a classic Lolita style dress, she's really into anime and stuff at the moment Smile

The outfit with the navy shorts that you linked to was lovely

Have at look at Rare in topshop, I think there are a few non-girly dresses. I was an indie kid a looonngg time ago and would have wanted something like this, with some really bright coloured shoes (and probably tights too)

All Saints has a sale on at the moment OP and although not traditional wedding attire you might find some paler colours in and an edgy enough design for your DD that she could wear after the wedding

Itsgottabebags · 26/06/2012 07:53

too colourful?

Itsgottabebags · 26/06/2012 08:03

Couls be 'rocked up 'later

Itsgottabebags · 26/06/2012 08:06

but white

Itsgottabebags · 26/06/2012 08:08

Link again edgy but white

DilysPrice · 26/06/2012 08:18

I would point out to her that she'll be a lot more conspicuous in shorts than she will in something anonymous like that top shop navy thing (perhaps with leggings underneath).

SillyBeardyDaddyman · 26/06/2012 08:24

Try Kate's clothing

Great range of alternative/retro style dresses.

GnocchiNineDoors · 26/06/2012 09:07

Jumpsuit
wrap over dress
colour block dress
purple smock style dress
think this one is perfect with black opaques, very weddingy

wordfactory · 26/06/2012 09:14

Lots of nice shorts/playsuits out there at the mo.

Could wear with shoes/sandals for a wedding and later with layered vests and converse.

girlgonemild · 26/06/2012 10:40

Have you checked out Zara's TRF range? They have a lot of indie t shirts/skinny jeans looks. This dress from there might work

only4tonight · 26/06/2012 11:58

Have you tried the fearne cotton range at very?

sweetheart · 26/06/2012 11:59

Remus - I feel your pain! My dd is 12 and has a very individual sense of style, i can't get her into a dress for love nor money and shopping for speical events can be so frustrating!

i have learn - at much cost and a near nervous breakdown - that there is absolutly no point wasting money getting them to wear something that they don't like. They will spend the day unhappy and uncomfortable and then never wear the item again.

With dd for special events we have compromised on the sort of outfit you linked to, skinny trousers or shorts a nice top and a blazer type jacket. Most of the items then get worn again as seperate pieces and so are not a total waste of money.

I think the outfit you linked to is lovely and if she's happy to wear something like that then it will be totally suitable for a wedding.

cocolepew · 26/06/2012 12:18

Definately the shorts or a playsuit. She should still keep her style, maybe just a neater version! A linen t or a stripey top and decent lo tops would be fine.
