Dress for dd who lives in shorts, band t shirts and Converse. Impossible?

Have a wedding coming up. I'm sorted (unless I change my mind) and dd1 will be a pleasure to shop with (although perhaps not a pleasure on the bank account). DD2 however, is a different prospect...

What can I suggest as a starting point please? She's 15 and probably a size 10 with an hourglass figure and biggish boobs - thinks she's 'fat' but is not. V indie in her style. Suits blues/reds but likes blacks/greys/burgundy. Has bright red (coloured) hair. Would probably only contemplate a dress if it was a mini and could be worn with black opaques!

Please help!

Grazia has just came through the post. On page 7 there is a pair of silky shorts by Very. They are a deep teal leopard print and could pass for a skirt!

CanIhavesomeginnowplease · 26/06/2012 13:33

there's only one in size s in stock.

TheSmallClanger · 26/06/2012 16:39

Some sort of trouser suit with a coloured top would be fine, surely?
I was the world's least glamorous teenager and wore some variation on this for all smart events up until I was 23 or 24.

DN is here and sounds v. like your DD. She had a quick look and come up with -

republic
flattering shape, but a bit odd
not very wedding-y
lovely
playsuit
another playsuit
more shorty playsuit

She could wear converse with a few of them, too!

BringBack1996 · 26/06/2012 16:56

The republic links don't seem to have worked! The bottom one has, though.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 26/06/2012 19:03

Wow - so many lovely links!

Sorry for disappearing last night - I went to bed. DD is now home and I'll drag her through all of the links later but so far, the playsuits are looking like serious contenders and (to me anyway) the Zara robots dress is BRILLIANT! I love the latter and think it's quite dd-ish because it's quirky but not too 'out there' since, as I said, she likes to fade in a bit rather than stand out too much!

Another jumpsuit. My friend who is very young and trendy got one from phase eight which you can style different ways to suit your figure.

What about this? Really lovely, I think, and vaguely T-shirty shape. Also something that won't make her stand out in the crowd but is also not shapeless and hideous:

girlgonemild · 27/06/2012 10:55

Glad you like the robot dress :)

Iatemyskinnyperson · 27/06/2012 11:30

How about a nice silky top and a pair of dressy shorts? Like this styling, not these particular ones though.

blossoming · 27/06/2012 12:44

Wondering if she could use Kirsten Stewart as a muse as she must be the most jeans, band shirt, converse wearing celeb of them all. If she doesn't like to be 'out there', she may well hate wearing a dress, as people will come up to her and say 'don't you look lovely' etc etc which she might hate.
Could she wear some black jeggings, smart t shirt and a blazer? With flats if she won't wear heels? Something like this?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 27/06/2012 18:02

You're absolutely right re the dress thing, Bloss - she DOES look nice in them and people WOULD comment and then she'd be even more uncomfortable. No to skinnies/treggings - she won't wear them as she thinks they make her hips/thighs look big (they don't).

Love that shorts outfit, IAteMySkinnyPerson - something like that would be perfect.

The t-shirt dress thing is worth looking out for too, thanks Honky - especially if we could find something similar perhaps in a blue or red.

Phase Eight probably too 'old ladyish' for her (even I think it's often frumpy and I'm 42!).

Oh to be young again! Good luck with it!

MoonlightandRoses · 27/06/2012 21:47

Ok, 'nother try.

How about black shorts and cartoon bird print blazer or this cropped black trim one or this Adam & the Ants-esque one
with animal print t-shirt or a basic Gap t-shirt or smarter sleeveless or zip front sleeveless or another bird print, but a bit more Kirsten

should all work with opaques and flats or heels.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 27/06/2012 21:57

Brilliant - especially the black shorts. I have a Saint Martins black blazer myself from a few years ago - one of my favourite items of clothing!

Bloss - that dress looks great but dd would be far too self conscious in something so bodycon.

OP posts:
MoonlightandRoses · 27/06/2012 22:17

Grin - I also have a couple of St. Martins' pieces bought a while back and loved ever since!

sassytheFIRST · 28/06/2012 06:54

I've worn smart shorts, jacket and heels to a wedding before now - looked ace though I say it myself ... Can't she just be a smarter version of her usual look?
