Selfridges Sale First Timer - help!!

Beegey · 13/06/2012 21:25

Off to Selfridges tomorrow for the first day of the sale. Childcare in place and urgently need decent new kit, particularly jeans.

Can anyone suggest what I should be looking out for, brands or style wise? 5"7 12/14 nearly 30 (gulp) and Sahm.

Have just discovered Whistles too, which I love, love, love. Anyone know when their sale begins?

Thank you. I know zilch and need assistance (waaaa)

I dont want to sound horrid but Selfridges clothes will do no good on a SAHM.
They need to be shown off, put together nicely and gawped at. I'd buy a few nice pieces for more special occasions.

If i was going to Selfridges, (which one are you going to? If its manchester i will meet you their ;)) I'd get a key item piece, IE a jacket, handbag, Dress or pair of timeless shoes. They will outlast the trend seasons, and keep strong for years.

If the Sam Endelmen (sp?) shoes are in the sale, get them. They are bloody amazing, neon yellow or bright blue studded back peep toes.

Marc Jacobs has some amazing things in, but i may be biased as i love him.

Beegey · 13/06/2012 22:27

Thanks Kate Spade. I realise that most of my clothes get trashed but I feel frumpy and dowdy most days so if I can spend a couple of hundred quid and get a couple of bits to make me feel special, I will be delighted.

Also have all of my friends turning 30 this year, many of whom are gorgeously chic and glam. I am already at a loss as to what to wear to the parties, but will panic about that in due course...

Great advice though, thank you! Seen SE sandals online, lush. Am after jbrand jeans too.

I"ll be trying my luck in London tomorrow, good luck in Mancs :)

I cant wait. Dont forget to post what you get!

faustina · 13/06/2012 22:50

oh goodness - of course you should buy clothes from Selfridges if you're a SAHM! Try Paige, MIH and J Brand for jeans. There is nothing better for your head, in any situation, than feeling and looking good

have a look at the dona ida website before you go (for research) - see which style you like - high rise/low rise - skinny/slim

maybe get some really good tshirts too - vince, splendid

if you only have a couple of hundred to spend, that's probably all you'll be able to get

sign up for the whistles newsletters and you'll hear when their sale starts

I hope you find some lovely things tomorrow!

Russianred · 13/06/2012 22:59

Selfridges is more than fine for you, amazing in fact - they stock everything. Why on earth can't a SAHM shop there? Must we stick solely to mumsy fare??

Look out for J Brand 811 jeans - lots of colours and they should get a good reduction. Mid-rise, not too skinny and very flattering. Agree on Vince and Splendid for basics. Whistles stuff may be reduced in the concession there already - worth taking a peek. Have a look on their website at the outlet section for some nice winter knitwear too.

Beegey · 13/06/2012 23:05

You are all amazing, thank you! Just what I needed to know. Will research tonight and on phone on way into town tomorrow.

I definitely need a boost and, although jeans an essential priority (!) I might well treat myself and get a proper grown up purse and/or pair of impractical shoes.

Thanks also for whistles news letter tip, will seek out the concession store too.

Yippee, excited!

you're mad

MidnightinMoscow · 14/06/2012 07:27

Lots of good advice here.

Get yourself to the contemporary women's fashion floor. That's wear the jeans are housed. Also in addition to Splendid/Vince there is also Maje, Sandro and Alexander Wang.

Also check out Reiss and Comptoir, I think they are on the floor below though.

I'd be looking for good jeans, coloured jeans are set to be on trend for autumn/winter. Maybe think about things that will go through the seasons for you.

Oh, The Kooples have some good sale stuff, that's on the jeans floor or selfridges.

Have a fan time, and have a glass of something in the fantasy bar to celebrate your purchases!

Let us know what you bought.

AmberNectarine · 14/06/2012 07:52

Oh my way there this morning. I am going back to work in Sept but have been a SAHM for 14 months and have been clad more or less exclusively in stuff either from or sold in Selfridges. I don't go out much due to the limitations of a bf baby, but I don't buy my clothes to impress other people, I buy them because I like them and enjoy wearing them. SAHMs can't wear stuff from Sellfridges? What a crock of shit!

OP you are looking for all the things I want, though. I promised not to elbow you very hard. Best of luck Wink

Russianred · 14/06/2012 08:10

Hey Amber, if you see any of those bargainous 811s in a 26, I think you should be my fashion fairy! Have fun ladies!

KateSpade · 14/06/2012 09:21

I just think whats the point on spending £1000 on a new wardrobe when you don't go anywhere to show it off? Thats all.

Designer clothes are meant to be worn, not sat at home all day.

flipflopflap · 14/06/2012 09:34

I'm a SAHM and I go plenty of places to show my clothes off, there isn't one day of the week I'm sat home all day Confused

Have a lovely shopping day Beegey.

faustina · 14/06/2012 09:53

KateSpade, do you seriously not think it's worth wearing nice things unless someone else is looking at you?

madmomma · 14/06/2012 09:58

yeah we SAHMs should all just disappear down the plughole wearing mum jeans and a nice cosy fleece Hmm

ishopthereforeiam · 14/06/2012 13:19

How did you get on OP?

I went this am... saw the jumper at Bond St being carried out in zip bag Sad

Didn't get a thing! I've previoulsy picked up Stuart Weitzman's for £75 and Prada heels for £50. These days the premium brands (Mui Mui etc) - only 30% and the only Sam Edelmans (I wanted a black leather or dark grey suede) I could find were size 3 (too small and only £40 off)) size 5 (my size) aqua ex display so stretched and grubby and a size 8(!) so left empty handed... got home and found them online and with larger reductions! Hope your trip was more successful?

Shopping envy Envy so post links to your purchases Grin

Russianred · 14/06/2012 14:31

How did you get on OP?

KateSpade I wear clothes that make me feel good about myself, for myself. I don't need to be looked at and admired by others in order to feel good about myself. I tend not to sit around the house in crap clothes as it generally makes me feel crap. I also tend not to sit around the house - SAHM'ing isn't about sitting round the house, despite what the acronym suggests Smile.

Beegey · 14/06/2012 15:34

Hello, thank you for the messages. After three hours on the 3rd floor, shop was fruitful - two pairs of jeans ;7's from £230 down to 75. They fit like a glove but are stupidly long so need them altered. And, surprisingly found some Marc Jacobs jeans, also fit perfectly, from 150 down to 70 Smile. Happy me.

Also picked up some cheap ballet pumps from office and fat yellow suede wedges. Nowt fancy but after 20 mins in the red gallery and seeing little in my size, I surrendered. I was a little disappointed at the low reductions; 125 off a 430 pair off a (albeit beautiful ) pair of Heels seems barely a sale at all.

Anyway I had a blissful shop and intend to enjoy my purchases sitting around in my 'home' looking darn fine Grin

Beegey · 14/06/2012 15:41

Also RussianRed, I did hunt out the j brand. 811's and they were indeed super soft, skimmed all the right bits and generally amazeballs but I had to hunt them out and they were very much full price. Sales assistant said they wouldn't go into the sale stock as they are a best seller. Boo. But thanks for the tip, will keep an eye out onlineand also in my local department store.

Didn't hear about the jumper Sad

ishopthereforeiam · 14/06/2012 15:55

Well done OP sounds like a worthwhile trip Grin

I did get distracted and picked up an Estee Lauder (non sale) make up kit in House of Fraser on my walk tho.

MrsCampbellBlack · 14/06/2012 17:00

Kate - you do realise that SAHM's don't actually stay at home all day don't you Wink

I mean I'm a SAHM but go out a fair bit in the day and in the evening too.

Sounds good beegey - there will be further reductions soon. Also keep an eye on netaporter - their sale will be starting soon.

ishopthereforeiam · 14/06/2012 17:21

mywardrobe sale is already on too...

AmberNectarine · 14/06/2012 18:32

I bought these Goldsigns - high rise so perfect for SAHMing Wink

MrsCampbellBlack · 14/06/2012 18:48

Tut tut Amber - why would you think that as a SAHM you are worth premium denim? Wink

Kate - seriously though I'm really quite interested in your viewpoint - I mean I've been a SAHM for the last ummm 8 years - would you seriously advocate I should just wear cheap clothes? Even when I can afford better?

AmberNectarine · 14/06/2012 19:06

That's why I only buy it cheap mrsCB - helps with the guilt. Don't worry, I gave birth in a skanky primark nightmare so I am worthy of my SAHM status.

AmberNectarine · 14/06/2012 19:07

Or even nightie. Though that Freudian keyslip was equally accurate.
