Emerald rings

Some people think emerald engagement rings are unlucky. Any thoughts? Must say 2 of my friends had emerald engagement rings and they have had very tough(emotionally) times

I have an emerald and diamond ring and I love it. And DP obviously for having the foresight to 'think outside the box' rather than get a boring old diamond on it's own!

They're hugely classy, spectacular looking and faaaaabulous.

Emotionally I am happier for having it in my life Wink

I think all these old wives tales are codswallop

PrimaBallerina · 07/06/2012 19:31

I have a sapphire engagement ring and love it. Coloured gems are beautiful. Emeralds might be a softer stone if I remember rightly so you might want to be careful with it.

Superstition is all bollocks I say - go for it.

SunshineOutdoors · 07/06/2012 19:46

I have emerald in my engagement ring and I am very happily married.

maudpringle · 07/06/2012 19:48

I have emeralds and I am happily married too!

lololizzy · 07/06/2012 20:22

really? I've never heard of that. I handchose my own gems to be set into my handmade ring ( a very rustic affair but it was in Glastonbury where my DP proposed!) in silver as gold makes me itch) I chose a pale emerald, and pink tourmalines, which look great together. I'm still not wed though! My ring is not conventional in its style, but if i'd had a conventional one, I'd still have chosen emerald. I thought it was meant to represent fidelity?

anniewoo · 08/06/2012 09:09

So glad to hear that emeralds aren't unlucky. They are beautiful gems.

Really? I have never heard this. My ring is emerald and it is also my ds's birth stone so extra special to me. We have been together 21 years so not that unlucky Wink

PuffPants · 08/06/2012 09:50

Really? My DM has a beautiful emerald and diamond engagement ring and a very happy marriage to boot!

Mustgettogym · 08/06/2012 09:53

Beautiful emeralds! I am after some burmese sapphires or Pakistani emeralds. Such beautiful colours and clarity. But I have a boring diamond engagement ring ;)

Ryoko · 08/06/2012 15:10

My engagement ring is Emerald never heard of them being unlucky thats opal.

they are delicate tho seeing as you shouldn't get them wet and they need oiling every now and then, even if they've been treated you still need to be careful with em.

luckylavender · 08/06/2012 17:35

They are unlucky - anything to do with weddings and the colour green. Having said that I have a beautiful emerald and diamind engagement ring and have been wearing it for 22 years this year.

mrscumberbatch · 08/06/2012 17:44

By that logic, I deduce that Emerald rings are mostly unlucky for the women who didn't get an emerald ring bought for them Wink

MsMoppet · 08/06/2012 17:44

Emerald is the softest precious stone and will get scratched if you wear it everyday (as you noramlly would an engagement ring).

If you will wear it everyday then FWIW if I were you I would get diamond enagagement ring or ruby/sapphire (both same chamical composition and second hardest but still not close to diamond) if you really want colour and then look for a second hand emerald "dress" ring for occassional wear. Don't know what your budget is so this might be a silly thing to say but coloured diamonds in less popular colours eg green or orange/russet can be surprisingly reasonable, esp. second hand.

rubyslippers · 08/06/2012 17:49

I have a diamond engagement ring but hanker after an emerald, preferably in an art deco setting

Seen some v beautiful ones in antiques markets

lisaro · 08/06/2012 18:04

Oo Ruby - my original one was/is a deco emerald ring. Still love it and wear it as a dress ring. OK we divorced but don't think the ring was to blame. A good quality one is worth as much if not more than diamond. Absolutely gorgeous.

treedelivery · 08/06/2012 18:08

I got an emerald and am happily married.

I don't wear it a great deal as it is a soft stone and I have a hard life Grin

Blooming expensive though, mine was cheapest in the shop and the next 'up' was a massive leap and in to the thousands whereas our budget was hundreds. I think you have to spend serious money to get anything good, whereas maybe not so with diamond (probably just because there is so much choice)

You can get amazing antique ones. Truly special.

mrscumberbatch · 08/06/2012 18:12

Like Diamonds there are various grades of Emerald depending on colour, flaws, characteristics etc.
A fabulous Emerald is more of a rarity than a fabulous Diamond though so they do command a higher price.

(It's also worth remembering that Diamonds only became the 'go to' stone for engagement rings after the famous De Beers advertising campaign (1930's))

catinboots · 08/06/2012 18:28

I have a rather large HUGE sapphire flanked with two diamonds and I love it - I get so many compliments. I love the meaning of the stone as well.

My friend has just got engaged with a gorgeous pear-shaped emerald and diamond ring. Emeralds have a lovely meaning too - I'll try and find the link that explains it.

So much better than all the boring old diamond solitaires.

Freshletticia · 08/06/2012 19:03

I have opal and sapphire in a flower shape (I am a keen gardener) Supposed to be unlucky but so far the only unlucky thing was that an opal got chipped. (fingers crossed).

AuntieMaggie · 08/06/2012 19:04

What about ruby catinboots?

Its dps birthstone and quite fancy it as an engagement ring

glastocat · 08/06/2012 19:07

I have a square cut emerald flanked by two diamonds that wasvintage second hand bought in Brighton Laines in 1996. I have worn it every day since, it has no scratches and still looks beautiful. It has been appraised at rather more than my husband paid for it too. oh and we are happily married. i had heard emeralds were unlucky, but it's nonsense. My mum has an opal in her engagement ring, she is happy too. I think solitaire diamonds are boring unless you have a fabulous one.

Oops sorry dp

MarySA · 08/06/2012 19:20

I would have had an emerald but the ones we could afford were awful. I think emeralds are beautiful. I got a solitaire. It's not fabulous but boring and I never wear it. Go for your emerald!

catinboots · 08/06/2012 20:03

From what I remember when I researched it

Sapphires = loyalty

Emeralds = stability and love

Rubies = passsion and wisdom

Still looking for link..........
