In dire need of new bras, and have looked at the archives and found this thread

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/style_and_beauty/1240096-Can-anyone-who-understands-bra-fittings-come-and-tell-me-where-Im-going-wrong

Are any people about who can help? I am pretty sure I was in the massively wrong bra size, so I want to start from scratch - where do I need to measure to get one of you lovely ladies to give me a starting point?!

Your best bet is not to measure but to go and try on.

Generally if you're big of norkage - try bravissimo / rigby and peller and Debenhams for ideas of size and good choice.

John lewis tend to come up well for fitting too.

Can you try your current ones on and see how they fit? You need to look at how the cup fits - are you busting out / is it loose? Most of the support from the bra should come from the back band and not the shoulder straps - so make sure that is comfortable and not too loose/tight etc.

Look at www.bravissimo.com and www.brastop.com for their fitting guides.

Try and find a local lingerie shop that's independent and carries lots of brands. What part of the country are you OP?

SecretSquirrel193 · 04/06/2012 17:05

Not mainland, so trying to avoid M+S, and therefore shop online Confused

Was in a 40C but had 4 boobs.. and suspect the back wasn't right? Am a size 16/18 on top generally

OP posts:
BadgersRetreat · 04/06/2012 17:25

4 boobs = cup not big enough

if you spill out and around you need a bigger cup - also if the wires are not sitting against your ribcage - your cup is not big enough

if you find your backstrap rides up then your back strap is too large

often if you go up a cupsize you go down a backsize

but the measurements are all rubbish - you have to try them on

(fitting instructions are on the Bravissimo website too i think)

SecretSquirrel193 · 04/06/2012 17:31

Do I just pick a random size and go from there? Thats the bit I don't know where to start :(

OP posts:
BadgersRetreat · 04/06/2012 17:43

try a 40D and go from there - sure sounds like the C is not big enough

maybe try a 38D and see how that feels round your back - if it's too tight you'll know as it will be uncomfortable

move about a bit in the changing room - little jiggle, bend over, raise your arms over your head. You need to see if it all stays put in 'real life' if you see what i mean.

if you raise your arms and your boobs fall out the bottom a bit your backstrap's too loose

BadgersRetreat · 04/06/2012 17:44

can you tell i have a hard time finding bras? i'm a 34F

such fun

don't get me started on bikinis

brighthair · 04/06/2012 17:46

Have you got a tape measure?
Measure under your boobs (fairly tight) and over your boobs. Come back with measurements
I am a 16 top and wear a 32/34 back...

ProcrastinationAteMyMorning · 04/06/2012 17:56

Yes, pop back with your sizes and we'll give you a starting point size. The size you measure often isn't actually what you need but it's a good place to start and once you know the 'rules' it ever so easy to fit yourself.

ProcrastinationAteMyMorning · 04/06/2012 17:58

Yeah, a 40 back would typically be right for someone in a size 20/22/24. brighthair in her 32/34 is on the slim ribbed side for a 16, you'd typically expect about a 34/36

ProcrastinationAteMyMorning · 04/06/2012 18:00

(Badgers - I assume you've seen the bravissimo bikinis? there's not a massive choice but they do have some acceptable ones.)

brighthair · 04/06/2012 18:02

Yeah I am small waist/under bust but J cup Grin

ProcrastinationAteMyMorning · 04/06/2012 18:03

(I really need to learn to write a whole post before I press post Blush)

M&S bras are fine, just make sure you take a big stick with you to keep their missfitting staff away...

brighthair · 04/06/2012 18:03

P.s Badgers I just got a bikini off eBay for £19 Wink

ProcrastinationAteMyMorning · 04/06/2012 18:03

Oooh, a true hour glass Envy

brighthair · 04/06/2012 18:05

Not quite!!
This is me instagr.am/p/Kkqz2Xtdzk/

SecretSquirrel193 · 04/06/2012 18:09

41 under, 49 over bust

So must be 40 something to start looking??

OP posts:
brighthair · 04/06/2012 18:11

I would be looking at 40FF or 40G
Debenhams have a sale on ATM, on their Gorgeous bras which go up to a J cup

ProcrastinationAteMyMorning · 04/06/2012 18:14

Heck lass - that's quite some frontage Grin I'd start you off in a 40H. 38I or 42G are other likely candidates?

But - how are you bands fitting ATM, I measure a 39 band but actually need a 34 or 32 to get the right fit. They shouldn't be right on me but they are Confused

Need to get the DC to bed (am an hour ahead) but if nobody has given you the rules by the time I get back I'll give you a hand.

brighthair you look amazing!

ProcrastinationAteMyMorning · 04/06/2012 18:18

Rule one is one inch difference between band and overbust measurement = one cup size, starting from A. (AA is band and over bust the same.) If a range includes a double letter size that's also a full size - almost all have DD but some have odd things like FF or whatever. Just look at their cup size list and count up 9 cup sizes... If your usually, say, a G then you'd probably be an FF in a range that includes one.

SecretSquirrel193 · 04/06/2012 18:24

The 40C I was wearing seemed ok on the back (but not the 4 boob bit!!) so I think it was oki?

I guess I'll order a 40FF and go from there, I can't imagine fitting into a G H or I Confused because I didn't think I was that big of nork and can't image it'll fit

OP posts:
BadgersRetreat · 04/06/2012 18:24

yes I actually ordered 2 new Bravissimo bikinis last week Procrast- i have been using them since it was one woman with a telephone in her garage!

PITA if they don't fit tho as i have to send them back from Canada. That's the only thing that puts me off

but went to bra shop here last week and they wanted nearly $200 for a bra! Shock Holy shit! Same brands as Bravissimo for three times the price.

got desperate the other week and got 2 36DDDs (we do triples here!) and they do sit off my ribs a bit. Grrr. Didn't jiggle about in the fitting room enough.

ProcrastinationAteMyMorning · 04/06/2012 18:31

Hell, and I thought bras were pricey over here

Squirrel - If I were you I'd order a 40G (if it's a range with an FF) or a 40H (if no FF) as well as the 40FF. The 40FF would be a 40G if the range didn't have an FF in it anyway...

There's a great fitting guide on the bravissimo site - here.

SecretSquirrel193 · 04/06/2012 18:47

Thanks!
