"I think that actually the high street doesn't do that many styles of summer dresses really. Many are just too formal - what we all need is the perfect school run dress"

Yes, I agree. I don't look good in shorts any more and just want something loose, cool and comfortable that isn't too long and not too short. My issue with the current fashions is that there aren't enough knee length dresses around at the moment.

MrsCampbellBlack · 27/05/2012 18:17

I bought a lovely dress in h&m for £3.99 this week. Cobalt blue, strappy and knee length. Its pretty loose fitting so very comfy and a gorgeous colour.

GOML - I did actually 'do' Angelina in the mirror in my dress Smile

MrsCampbellBlack · 27/05/2012 18:18

And those ruched maxis must cost about 5p to make hence why there are so many of them around.

I do tend to think smocking is best left to babies.

BobbysBeardOfWonder · 27/05/2012 18:37

Just out of interest, how short would someone have to be to NOT look good in a maxi?!
I've never worn one but since giving birth to DS two weeks ago am struggling to find anything that covers my multitude of sins Sad

Trills · 27/05/2012 18:49

Your title looks like NORA is a brand of dresses...

janmoomoo · 28/05/2012 21:57

I don't mind them but is there an unspoken law that whenever five or more women are gathered together in one place one must be wearing a maxi dress?

I have been to a couple of weddings recently and have a sweepstake on how many maxi dresses there will be there.

Bunbaker · 29/05/2012 12:36

And I bet if you went into town on a Saturday most of the young people will be wearing skinny jeans/trousers. It is fashion after all.

Ishoes · 29/05/2012 12:47

I love maxi dresses-not sure they love me as I am a 14/16 and only 5'6 but I dont care!-my legs are horrendous with varicose veins and no amount of fake tan can cover themSad

I never buy the cheap ones from primark though-they are horrid. All mine are from monsoon or phase eight so they are better material and hang nicer imo. I buy them in the 70% off sales and put them away til the sun comes out!

Bunbaker · 30/05/2012 15:44

"only 5'6"

What do you mean only.? I think you would look fabulous in a maxi if you bought the right style.

LieInsAreRarerThanTigers · 30/05/2012 15:50

I have seen at least two people who look good in them! I've nothing against the dresses per se, some of them are very pretty, but I would not wear one as I think I am about 2 inches too short and maybe not thin enough to look good in one? I do think maybe these days my legs are my 'best' bit too...

PerryCombover · 30/05/2012 15:53

I like them they make people look like sofas

Iamcalledclaire · 30/05/2012 16:43

Oh christ another of these threads. Really???

I hate maxi threads are almost as ubiquitous as the dresses they complain of.

I'll just cut and paste:

I think loads of people of differing sizes look good in maxi dresses.

I think they are lasting as a fashion because:

A) they are lovely and cool in hot weather

B) they cover up your legs meaning all the fake tan/wax/shave angst is seriously reduced.

C)it's a dress-dresses are brilliant, grab and wear, no finding a matching top complexities.

D)in most cases most women look so much more elegant in a long dress than in all the other shorts/crops//t shirts type combos they probably be wearing instead.

E)they do have a 'dress up' feel but many are suitable for daytime too.

F) they come in so many differing styles that every women can find one to fit her needs-just like dresses in general obv. But you do need to know already what you should/shouldn't be wearing for your body shape.

G) women feel good in them. They feel feminine, floaty, dressed up and summery.

Obviously, a cheap cotton ill fitting strapless dress on an overweight large busted women with sunburn, is never going to be a good look.

By there's so much more to maxis than that and I think they'll be around for a while longer, I think they're a GREAT fashion for all women.

Bunbaker · 30/05/2012 17:31

And, again, I'll say excellent post Iamcalledclaire

MarshaBrady · 30/05/2012 17:35

That one in Noddy's link is gorgeous.

minervaitalica · 30/05/2012 17:51

There are FAR worse style disasters that have been around for a lot longer than maxi dresses. A good quality (not cheap fabric), fitted maxi dress with appropriate straps can work.

Examples of very common looks that have been around forever despite only looking good on a few people:

  • Capri pants in a neutral or "summery colour". Generally matched with spaghetti straps. Actually very hard to pull off.
  • White trousers which are not lined.
  • Plastic very "open" ballerinas, which the wearer then drags on the floor.
  • Cheap plastic flipflops as day wear in London (and cities in general, although not great in the countryside either Grin ). Minging feet by the end of the day.
Iamcalledclaire · 30/05/2012 18:27

Thanks bunbaker Grin.

Totally agree Minerva.

DollysDrawers · 30/05/2012 18:49

Aw crap. I bought this one yesterday but now I feel shit about it. THANKS YOU BASTARD MAXI HATERS!!!! Grin

HaleAndPacemaker · 30/05/2012 19:07

Genuine LOL at "horrible elasticated floral shitbags"

MrsRobertDuvallHasRosacea · 30/05/2012 19:11

I wore a very nice LTS one (I know, not words which naturally go together!) last Saturday to a party, and felt very elegant. Broad straps, very flattering black jersey with a tribal design around hem.
But then I am 6 feet tall and slim [smug]

Ishoes · 30/05/2012 19:30

I wore one today too-sorry cant do links but it is the Lotus print maxi from monsoon. I got a lot-well 2!-compliments on it!

I meant I am "only" 5'6 as most of my friends are taller-bitches!
