Strapless ones invariably look cheap

One needs one that allows bra straps

lumbago · 27/05/2012 17:47

Yup. 5'9 and size 10

But you know a lot of women hate their legs because of veins but they have lovely slim bodies and legs so maxis do look fab on them.

I just don't get this hatred of any item of clothing.

noddyholder · 27/05/2012 17:47

love The flowery ruchey strapless halter cheapy primark ones with big jazzy print are a different ball game. You HAVE to be skinny

get0rfm0iland · 27/05/2012 17:48

Loads of people round here wear those strapless maxis (with the ruched bust) with a bra underneath, so you can see the straps. Who told them that was permissable. Grin

picnicbasketcase · 27/05/2012 17:49

I don't hate the items themselves, but they really don't suit a lot of people, including me. Too short and tubby. But I see an awful lot of shorter and tubbier people wearing them anyway. Those strapless ones with ruched elastic that should really only ever be worn on the beach. Shudder.

get0rfm0iland · 27/05/2012 17:50

I tried a jersey stripey one on last year just to see.

It looked all right but when I walked it was really restrictive, I may as well have worn a hobble skirt from circa 1910.

MrsCampbellBlack · 27/05/2012 17:50

Thing is if I was the 5ft10 18 year old size 6 - like hell would I wear a maxi - I'd be in denim cut-offs and a string bikini.

MrsCampbellBlack · 27/05/2012 17:51

You need splits GOML - my barganous DP one had side splits so I can do my very best Angelina Wink

get0rfm0iland · 27/05/2012 17:52

I remember my gran buying me a dress from C&A when I was about 8 with that ruched/smocky elastic bodice. It made me cry. I would feel the same about wearing that kind of thing now. Grin

jazzchickens · 27/05/2012 17:54

I have seen some women wear them, with the right shoes & accessories and look bloody fantastic.

I have also seen pensioners on the high street wearing maxi dresses with their M & S cardigans over the top and pulling shopping trolleys. That's not such a good look in my opinion.

get0rfm0iland · 27/05/2012 17:55

Oh yes side splits so I can stand there arms and legs akimbo. That might change my mind.

cocolepew · 27/05/2012 17:55

I saw more of a lady on friday than I cared to, when she stood on her dress and pulled it down.

GreenEyesAndHam · 27/05/2012 17:57

It's the sundresses that are the problem, especially the cheap ones with the strings in the centre of the chest that tie around the neck. I haven't seen one person wearing one that looks good, not one.

MrsCampbellBlack · 27/05/2012 17:57

I think that actually the high street doesn't do that many styles of summer dresses really. Many are just too formal - what we all need is the perfect school run dress Wink

Or GOML - splits mean its a dress you can walk rather than hobble in.

cocolepew · 27/05/2012 17:57

poor DH still hasn't recovered

cocolepew · 27/05/2012 17:58

I hate badly fitted vest tops as well, some women seem to be in love with their boobs, and want to share them with everyone else.

jazzchickens · 27/05/2012 17:58

Ah.... Clockhouse at C&A - that's where I got my first maxi skirt from back in the '70s.

Now that WAS floral shite!

cybbo · 27/05/2012 17:59

the nation will soon bore of them, the same way they bored of gypsy skirts and those leather disc belts

TheHouseOnTheCorner · 27/05/2012 17:59

What about palazzo pants? I agree that there are some proper shockers out there in terms of strapless maxis...bright red shoulders all plump and emerging from the smocked bit at the top...yak.

cocolepew · 27/05/2012 18:00

I have palazzo pants so they're ok Grin

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 27/05/2012 18:02

I look lovely in mine my head

get0rfm0iland · 27/05/2012 18:03

Oh yes MrsCB - I know, I just have pleasing mental images of me doing an Angelina pose. My previous post looked like I was being a sarcastic ratbag, wasn't meant.

I'm short and have never been skinny so never had them before as they're so unforgiving.

But now I'm pregnant I love them! Cool comfy and make your belly look big Grin
