Ok so i do have major body issues anyway always have, i have 2 children one 7 months so body at its worst anyway i havnt bought new clothes in 5 years and live in trainers and jeans i know nothing of fashion but i so want that to change, im devestated that pregnancy has left me with wide stretch marks down thighs to mid calf! and varicose veins in same places my legs need to be covered all the time so im sweltering in this heat in bootcut jeans :( on top of that i have horrid feet and have never shown them, i have massive veins on top that stick out more in the heat and long toes with wide spaces between i cant wear flip flops, sandals etc even if i wanted to because they spill over :( the funny thing is i love the sun it really lifts my mood but i just cant enjoy it because im so hot and covered up i feel like im the only one in the world like this

i tend to cover up in the sun too, partly because i have scars on my arms that i don't want people to see, partly because i dislike my legs/arms and partly because I burn easily and so tend to cover up.

buy yourself some lightweight trousers. I got these in Asda yesterday and they're lovely! really floaty and cool to wear.
just wear with a fitted t-shirt and it looks just fine IMO
or maybe some long floaty skirts?
or what about a light maxi dress? I know that maxi dresses are the bane of a lot of MN'ers lives, but quite frankly if they feel comfy and keep you cool then I say wear one!

i am certain there are sandals you could wear too. you might feel self conscious about your feet but i bet no-one really looks at them., I know I don't particularly look at people's feet!

wildstrawberryplace · 25/05/2012 11:51

I don't like showing much skin either. I wear lightweight trousers like chinos or canvas jeans, and thin cotton tops/shirts. Sandals/birkis. If I'm just slobbing at home or taking DC to the park or whatever, I'll wear chino shorts/cargo shorts that end just below the knee. You should find plenty of similar options in the shops right now. Not everyone wants to wear skimpy shorts and spaghetti strap vests!

wildstrawberryplace · 25/05/2012 11:53

And don't worry about your feet! No one cares as long they are clean, honest from a fellow long toed person

ArielThePiraticalMermaid · 25/05/2012 12:04

I too have weird feet and they are particularly repulsive at the moment as one of my big toenails is hanging off after a mishap several months ago. I have told myself that anyone who is bothered about someone else's feet is weird and shouldn't be worried about.

Re the veins thing, is your skin very pale? A bit of fake tan can reduce the appearance of leg veins. Mine is currently developing as we speak

auldspinster · 25/05/2012 12:07

Airbrush legs is great for covering up veins too. I'm a pretty large lady but figure that people are too preoccupied with their own perceived faults to pay that much attention to others. Easier said than done i know!

auldspinster · 25/05/2012 12:08

What about espadrilles for your feet, nice and cool without having to get your toes out.

lattelov3r · 25/05/2012 12:12

thanks ladies, yes im very pale think milk bottle! but my veins never used to show so much no idea whats going on with them they are showing all over now i have never tried fake tan before in my life but think i should give it a go i suppose its just seeing lots of people going around in nice dresses or shorts looking very summery and here i am hiding away

ArielThePiraticalMermaid · 25/05/2012 12:15

Ah, don't do that :(. It's far too lovely and far too rare to hide indoors when we get Actual Summer Weather.

Definitely give the fake tan a go: make sure you exfoliate and moisturise to the max beforehand and when you apply rub it in so thoroughly and evenly, otherwise you will get streaks. Pay most attention to knees and shinbones

moonshine · 25/05/2012 12:18

I have my own body issues and have to cover up certain parts but honestly, you should just spend a day or so people-watching in the sun trying not to look pervy and you will actually notice that most people's feet are weird/deformed/not perfect and that a hell of a lot of people have stretchmarks in all sorts of places, whatever their shape. It's more the norm, honestly (unless you only mix with lithe 18 year olds, that is).

mysteryfairy · 25/05/2012 12:19

Wear a really nice light maxi dress or skirt and maybe a very light gauzy cardigan and you'll be fully covered and cool.

If you look at the does my bum look 40 blog there is a whole post about Sam Edelman Gigi sandals and cheaper high street copies in which she says they go really well with long toes so maybe they would be a good look for you. A pedicure and lovely shade of polish might help to make you feel better.

Lastly we are our own worst critics - I bet no one else even notices the things that seem like massive issues to you and you look great and should enjoy the sunshine!

thisisyesterday · 25/05/2012 12:22

apparently victoria beckham has awful feet if that's any consolation? lol

you could also try ballet flats? or a closed toe sandal?

thisisyesterday · 25/05/2012 12:23

i have no idea what is fashionable right now, but something like this perhaps?

AnAirOfHope · 25/05/2012 12:31

I have a toenail missing and two others that look strang after ingrowthing nails. Now i wear crocs in summer and they are great. I second the flotys cotton dress or skirts and vest tops as noone looks anyway.

pinktortoise · 25/05/2012 13:12

Don't suffer in the heat. Walking down to school yesterday afternoon it was 27 degrees and the people I noticed more were those dressed in heavy jeans , long-sleeved tops etc as I just thought they must be so uncomfortable.
We are always our own worst critics and others won't notice your feet etc!
I would say maxi skirts and dresses are cool and comfortable and cover legs , cotton chinos rolled up to ankle are cool. Loose slouchy Tshirts are around a lot this year. All of these can be got very cheaply at h and m or primark.
If you are not used to sandals then maybe try something abit more substantial like Birkenstocks. Loads of colours. Also paint your toenails always improves feet or if funds permit treat yourself to a salon pedicure. Lots of lovely bright pinks, corals, oranges this year. I find Maybelline to be just as good as high end and lasts well.
Accessories also may give you abit more confidence about your look. A bright bangle or necklace that clashes or coordinates with outfit? A pair of sunglasses that suit you , m and s has some excellent ones this year for £9.
Lastly if you are not used to fake tan then get some of the Dove summer sun in the light shade. A moisturiser that builds gradual colour.
But above all enjoy the hot weather as we don't get lucky every year!

tunaday · 25/05/2012 18:16

Definitely maxi dresses cover a multitude of problem areas yet are cool. So are linen trousers. I've always liked River Island's. I'd not worry too much about your feet. Do what you can with them - foot file ( Soap&Glory's one is THE MN thing to buy for scaly feet!) till they're smooth, flexitol or similar to make skin nice and soft, nails neatly filed and a bit of polish if you can be bothered and stick on some sandals and don't worry about the veins. Today's Daily Mail has a double page spread of celebs feet with everything from bunions, veins, crooked toes, scaly skin and they were ALL in sandals. I think if your feet and underarms are cool then you feel a lot less hot and bothered.

thisisyesterday · 25/05/2012 20:00

can anyone recommend a maxi dress, or a style of maxi dress, that would look ok on someone tallish, size 14ish, but with a bit of a saggy tummy that's usually kept in check by high waist jeans Blush

MrsCampbellBlack · 25/05/2012 20:17

Thisisyesterday - DP have a good selection of maxi dresses, also New Look and Warehouse. A maxi skirt with a roll top also works well at disguising a tummy.

Latte - maxis will be your friend I think as they do keep you cool in this weather. Also a short denim jacket on top works well when its a bit cooler - h&m have a lovely one in at the moment.

And frankly if I listened to what the collective on mn say - well I'd never leave the house in the morning Wink

I bet I have uglier feet than you Peace: bony, veiny, chalk white with long bony toes and purple, hanging off toenails. My mother tells me consolingly that I have my grandad's feet, though it doesn't console me. However, OP, consider how often you go round looking at people's feet - never I'll bet.

thanks all for the replies i will definatly try some fake tan not sure if it will work though as i have tried putting foundation over them before just to see if it would cover Blush but it didnt at all, i tried some sandals on today but my feet were actually coming of the edges! i found myself looking at lots of peoples feet today and nobody seemed to have the long wide toe problem ive tried ballet pumps before but they really hurt my feet despite people telling me how comfy they are must just be my feet again! i did suffer the pain of a pair today tho as it was so hot although im now blistered and cut arghh

dexter73 · 27/05/2012 20:39

My toes are so long they are like fingers but I can't imagine people really look at them so I wear flip flops and just forget about their generous length!

lattelov3r · 27/05/2012 20:52

ive always been told by family that my feet look like hands because they are so long lol do you not find it difficult to get flipflops to fit your toes?
