Thanks mummmsy ... Back on the diet tomorrow

minipie · 22/05/2012 21:33

anniewoo I don't think I'm fat. I think I could do with losing a bit of weight... it's different! Actually, more accurately, I could do with toning up and converting some of the flab to muscle (which would probably mean I weighed more rather than less).

NarkedPuffin · 22/05/2012 21:38

MysteryFairy please look at your BMI. It's just over 19.

Downandoutnumbered · 22/05/2012 21:39

I'm 5'2" and 7st7, which is too thin: I look scrawny at the moment. 9st4 would be too heavy for me but I have small bones: my feet are size 3 and I have freakily thin wrists (but bust is 28G, which makes me look fatter than I am). On anyone normal I think it would be absolutely fine. Ignore your mother! I feel your pain on the mother front, mine came to see us a couple of weeks ago and sighed sadly at what a lovely life we'd had before and how DS had limited it. I only just refrained from thumping her, especially as I don't really understand what she was on about: our lives haven't changed in any very dramatic way since he was born!

ameliagrey · 23/05/2012 09:05

narkedpuffin- you asked another poster to look at her BMI- saying it was just over 19.

Thatis actually healthy. The acceptable range is 18.5-25, and the recommendation is that you should be nearer the lower end.

My BMI is 19.5 and at a check up with a consultant ( for something not related to weight or general health, ) he said that was "perfect". I have tiny wrists- 5.5 inches- and am generally petite, but still have around 24% fat according to my scales.

The better way to judge your health is not BMI but waist size - over 34 inches for women and you are heading for trouble- diabetes, heart disease and cancer.

mummmsy · 23/05/2012 09:33

hmmm ameliagrey i'm at the upper end of my bmi, maybe that's the problem...

OP posts:
augustajones · 23/05/2012 09:42

No, I'm 5'4" and 9.5 stone with 32DD boobs in my early forties. I'm the heaviest I've been and feel like I could lose a couple of pounds but I do not consider myself fat. The nurse at the GP recently described me as petite which was nice though I'm not sure I agreed with her. :)

If I was the same size and answering this question when I was 18 my answer would have been the opposite because I thought the stick insect look was fashionable.

mummmsy · 23/05/2012 09:45

that's interesting about age, augustajones because i'm in my very late 20's - prob a factor one way or another!

OP posts:
Willowisp · 23/05/2012 10:01

I'd say you are chubby/chunky. I'm 5ft 3 & 8st 4. I don't have big boobs like you, but I am....solid on the thighs

DaenerysTargaryen · 23/05/2012 10:04

So how does one figure out their bmi?

Willowisp · 23/05/2012 10:10

I think the best way to work out BMI is to look in the mirror naked. The charts would say I am low BMI, but you only need to look at my thighs to see not the case.

I (sometimes) feel like an egg timer where all the sand has fallen below the waist.

Also have about 4-5 friends who are similar heights, similar, within 1/2 stone weight & completely different shapes & dress sizes.

IMO, not many people are in proportion. Would you feel happier weighing less ?

MidnightinMoscow · 23/05/2012 11:03

How comes everyone on MN has massive knockers?

mummmsy · 23/05/2012 11:09

ahaha MidnightinMoscow

OP posts:
mummmsy · 23/05/2012 11:11

Willowisp I'm completely in proportion, that's the problem, I've been able to put on a stone and still look good.

I think i feel fat because I'm not toned (and because of my Bloody Mother!) and yes would be happier if I weighed less... the elusive half a stone less Grin

BMI calculator

www.weightlossresources.co.uk/body_weight/healthy_weight/bmi_calculator.htm

As you can see, 25 is on the cusp of normal and also overweight.

BMI is a guide- some people like athletes have BMIs that would put them as overweight- but it's all muscle.

Your waist size is more important, and where the fat is distributed. If it is round your middle this is a sign that you may also have internal fat which contributes to heart disease and diabetes. If as a woman you have chunky thighs, big bum but a small waist- say 26-27 inches, then you are most likely healthy.

The other point is- waits for flaming- that so many people are now overweight- something like 40% of all women- that we have lost our perspective on what is a healthy size. if you look back at photos of people on the 1940s and 1950s then they appeared much slimmer overall.

YouveCatToBeKittenMe · 23/05/2012 11:13

I feel really huge after reading some of these weights! Sad

ToryLovell · 23/05/2012 12:46

Me too CatKitten

mummmsy · 23/05/2012 13:10

choceyes · 23/05/2012 14:29

I'm 5'2" and 7st7, which is too thin: I look scrawny at the moment.

See, this is my exact height and weight, and I don't look too thin at all. I have 30F boobs, a belly that looks about 4/5 months pregnant, which means I have to limit myself to certain styles of clothes (2 c-sections close together is the reason) and also love handles.
I can look thin if I wear skinny jeans and a voluminous top, or look flabby if I wear a shift stype of dress, or anything fitted near the wait. I wear a Next size 6 and an 8 anywhere else. But if I chose the wrong style of clothing, I could even chose a 12 to fit my belly into.

So I think it really depends on how you carry your weight. Or if you are flabby or muscely. I am more flab than muscle. I'd rather be more muscle and toned and weigh more really.

OP - I weighed the same as you just after I gave birth, and even then no, I wasn't fat, just chubby.

AdventuresWithVoles · 23/05/2012 14:34

I don't think so, reckon you'd have to be 2 stone heavier before the word "fat" came to mind.

If that 9stone+ is completely apple shaped I might think "fat", though more likely "plump".

NarkedPuffin · 23/05/2012 14:37

Yes I did AmeliaGrey, because she was talking about her thighs being too big, needing to lose weight etc.

Ephiny · 23/05/2012 14:38

"So I think it really depends on how you carry your weight. Or if you are flabby or muscely. I am more flab than muscle. I'd rather be more muscle and toned and weigh more really."

Yes exactly the same for me. I'm 5'2" and about 8st, and I am a bit too fat. No I'm not overweight, but weight and fat are different things, and I am fat in the sense of having too much body fat for my size (and probably not enough muscle/lean body mass). I assume this is how people are able to weigh significantly more than me and be the same or smaller in clothes sizes.

It's about shape as well - I can often wear a size 8 top, or a dress if it has a flared skirt, as I have small-ish boobs and a small waist, but sometimes have to go up to as much as a 12 in trousers or jeans because I'm a bit pear-shaped and seem to carry most of my fat around the hip/thigh region. Especially now almost all jeans seem to be very slim-cut in that area!

You can't really tell a lot about how someone looks just from the height/weight numbers (except for extreme cases obviously), and there's not much point comparing yourself with others especially if it makes you feel bad about yourself!
