I think I must be mad but look at my photos and tell me which outfits work and which don't

I've lost 4.5 stone in the last 18 months and I am trying to get used to dressing for my new size and shape but am struggling to find my way a bit.

In what might be a moment of utter madness I have uploaded some photos to Flickr and I'd love some of you to have a flick through them and tell me if any outfits are good, any are not so good or any suggestions.

I'm looking for honest but not brutal Wink

This is how big I was 18 months ago here

These are my outfit photos here

My main worries are:

  1. I'm 31, am I dressing too young for my age?

  2. Are my legs too fat for dresses?

  3. Do I just look a bit daft?

Thanks to anyone who takes the time to have a look Thanks

Where is your stripey jumper from btw? Very nice!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 12/05/2012 16:59

Ah just looked closer - it's not a jumper at all!

ggirl · 12/05/2012 17:06

I'm really impressed with your weight loss..well done!!

Think I may join Slimming World next week , i've heard about a few people recently who have had great success with it.

ggirl · 12/05/2012 17:07

oh and your outfits are lovely...you could wear anything tbh Envy.....bitch Wink

QuinnFabray · 12/05/2012 17:11

I looked just like fat you, a few years ago, lost four stone and have looked like thin you ever since. I know exactly where you're coming from, it took a while to know how to dress.

You look great, definately not too old. I'm 37 and wear the same kind of stuff, and will continue to do so for ages yet I reckon.

MrsMeow · 12/05/2012 17:11

You look fantastic! Agree with the boots/dress thing though - although they do work v well when worn with tights.

Well done!

ThatVikRinA22 · 12/05/2012 17:14

well done you! i cant even manage to lose 10 bleeding pounds....thats all i want to lose and can i heck as like seem to get my ass into gear....
liking all of those but with some boot alterations!

the dresses and cardy combos are nice but you need to lose the ankle boots and team those with tights and shoes or knee high boots, you could also wear knee high boots with the skinny jeans too.

the little grey ankle boots are ok with the jeans, but personally i prefer knee high boots with jeans.

cocolepew · 12/05/2012 17:20

You look fabulous! well done on your weight loss

PorkyandBess · 12/05/2012 17:22

Wow, well done on the weight loss; you look great.

I love the butterfly dress but would like it with a less baggy cardigan. The ankle boots look great with jeans (you look v good in jeans btw) but not with dress as they make your legs look chunky. Shoe boots are very flattering on the leg, imo. I would also go for tights that are more opaque.

kellykateneedsaholiday · 12/05/2012 17:22

You look fabulous, well done on losing weight, Im not a big fan of the boots though but everyhting else looks great (hmm if you could see the way I dress half the time I shouldnt really be telling anyone about what they are wearing, I tend to go for the dragged through a hedge backwards look most days Grin )

wheresthepopcorn · 12/05/2012 17:26

Great stuff! The only constructive thing I can say is that you definitely do not need long cardigans. In the first pic, it looks great when your top hangs above your hips as you have nothing to hide. You GO girl

QuinnFabray · 12/05/2012 17:27

Ankle boots are great with dresses. Much more up to date, fashion wise, than knee high boots. But I wear mine with opaque tights.

ThatVikRinA22 · 12/05/2012 17:29

oh that told me then! personally i dont like them as they seem to cut me off at the wrong place - but each to their own.

what do i know! i am sooooo not in fashion

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 12/05/2012 17:40

OP you look amazing, just amazing!

I agree that you need more colour in your clothes, and I too am not a fan of ankle boots in general.

In terms of shoes that are a bit more substantial than ballet flats, have you looked at loafers and brogue-type things? There are loads about at the moment.

Also consider leggings with flats and a dress rather than tights.

And no, you don't need a long cardi to 'cover up' any longer :) :)

pickledsiblings · 12/05/2012 17:41

Your brown boots are a better shape for dresses than your grey/black ones but I'm not keen on the brown boots black tights combo. Other than that you look fantastic - I really like the bare legged brown boots look, definitely not too young for your age. A casual blazer, some coloured jeans and your look is complete Smile.

mirpuppet · 12/05/2012 18:09

Well done and you look fab!

tethersend · 12/05/2012 18:11

DO NOT wear leggings with a dress. Ever.

Sorry Alibaba- agree with you that she looks amazing though!

MarianForrester · 12/05/2012 18:14

I like the boots with the dress. Not too old and fat- far from it.

Colour your next goal- maybe small floral print, ease on gently? Smile

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 12/05/2012 18:25

Blimey what is wrong with leggings and a dress? I cannot go bare legged, and I hate tights in summer - what other options are there?

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 12/05/2012 18:26

Sorry that came over a bit aggressively, it wasn't meant to! Grin

gingerchick · 12/05/2012 18:34

Hi well done you look amazing! Only thing I would say is ditch both sets of boots with the outfits but personally I don't like ankle boots worm with anything but trousers over them. But other than that You look great and I love the clothes

NewAndHopefullyImproved · 12/05/2012 19:16

Hi all, I'm back now the DC are in bed for the night. Thanks so much for all the input, I really do appreciate the ideas and the honesty!

I've just looked on Flickr and my overweight picture has had 1067 views Shock. I hope no one that knows me has spotted me yet!

I can't reply to you all but:

DryWhite I tried on some red skinny jeans but wasn't brave enough to buy them. I like the sound of them with a blazer though.

Can anyone link to a cheapish black blazer that would work? Then I'd know what to look for.

Oh, just seen the camel coloured one that Speckle has linked to, I like it. In a shop I wouldn't have even looked at it though because its quite light in colour and I wouldn't think I'd look ok in it. I'll go in store and try it on.
Love the wedges too Speckle, again I'll have to try them on for the wobble test.

Remus The stripey tops are all from H&M, one is a jumper, one a t-shirt.

PorkyAndBess I do have a less baggy cardigan in black but I don't think there is a photo of it because we had to stop the 'photo shoot' because my poor, long suffering DH ended up with pins and needles in his legs because he was kneeling taking my picture for so long, waiting as I quickly got changed into each outfit.

Thank you so much for all your feedback, I went out this afternoon in 'Outfit (3)' from the photos and felt great Grin

You have done so well. you have a lovely figure and agree you can wear pretty much most things.

I agree with some on the boots comments. I think they cut your legs of and make them look shorter than they are. The ballet pumps look much better.

I think you should definitely wear more colour and try wearing some tighter tops. It's hard when you have been one size as you tend to dress for your old shape. I've recently lost over 2st and gone from a 16 to a 12 so am experimenting myself.

The striped top looks a bit baggy but the jeans and bright shoes look nice.

Might be worth seeing a personal shopper or going shopping with a friend and trying on some stuff you would normally avoid. I bet you'll be surprised at how nice you look in some different things and some bright colours.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 12/05/2012 19:45

Thanks - so one of them IS a jumper! :) I saw a nice striped jumper in Gap today but Gap quality is generally so bad nowadays that I didn't try it on.

Re ankle boots and dresses - black opaques / your loose around the ankle charcoal boots (which are lovely btw) and a dress would be nice. Bare legs (or thin, thin tights) and those tighter brown boots are very unflattering together. I tend to think that tighter around the ankle boots worn with dresses give a slight 'Miss Piggy' hoof look to even the best of legs. That doesn't mean that you look like Miss Piggy btw (NOT AT ALL) but it DOES mean that it's far from your best look imho. That's why Outfit 12 looks great and why Outfit 15 (imvho) doesn't work.
