'Grecian' style evening dress for a really posh do - not black - any ideas?

designerbaby · 09/05/2012 20:43

I need anew dress for another of DHs 'do's'. We're generally the youngest there by 10 years or so (and we're not young!). The older women we all be in ballgowny type things, which I WILL NOT entertain.

I have the idea of something Grecian-y. Minimal, drapey, relatively bling-free...

Anyone seen such a thing?

Pleeeeeeeaaase?

I thank you in advance...

P.s I'm 5ft2", size 10, slim but curvy, if that helps. Of course it may lead you all to tell me that I've lost my mind even considering the above and it will look TERRIBLE...

Have a look at Wallis as there are 2 long dresses in green and orange, just seen the orange one on Lorraine on ITV this morning hth

noddyholder · 09/05/2012 20:47

colour and length?

designerbaby · 09/05/2012 21:23

Um... Long, I think... I wore a shirt dress to the last three. Colour, don't mind but not black (boring). Thanks for the Wallis tip - may I ask, are they printed or plain?

Needs to be eveningy...

Thanks!

i love this

OhBuggerandArse · 09/05/2012 21:27

See I love the idea of that one, noddy, but don't you think that unless you were very tall and slender and soignée it might end up looking a bit like a... dressing gown?

noddyholder · 09/05/2012 21:31

It is crepe though so hopefully has weight. I would wear with a really simple choker and hair off the face and heels simple clutch/purse.

MoonlightandRoses · 09/05/2012 21:35

I am a similar height / shape to you. You didn't mention budget but how about a coral asymmetrical evening gown?

ChippyMinton · 09/05/2012 21:44

coast
halter neck

Sleepwhenidie · 09/05/2012 21:48

You don't mention budget but Halston Heritage has some fab Grecian style dresses - prices in £400-£600 range but wishwantwear.com has lots of gorgeous gowns from current season collections including Halston, for hire at about 1/6 of their retail value.

Sleepwhenidie · 09/05/2012 21:49

I've tried on that particular one I linked to btw and it is stunning

Sleepwhenidie · 09/05/2012 21:53

Oh-just noticed you are 5ft 2"....you will need some serious heels with the dress I linked to, it is vair vair long.

designerbaby · 09/05/2012 22:40

I know sleepwhenidle - I have a collection of serious heels as DH is 6ft4". I need them otherwise we look like a circus act. However, I may need stilts for Halston.

Also if I'm spending £90 I want to KEEP IT. Whatever it is... Grin. DH will have a fit if I spend £400. Actually DH will have a fit whatever I spend, but he may actually DIE if I spend over £200... I might be prepared to test that theory though... [bad wife]. In all other resects it's PERFECT though. That sounds sarky, it's not it really is perfect. If I could afford it I'd buy some damn stilts...

Noddy, I love the one you've linked to - it's very cool. But fear I may be about 6" too short to carry it off. I'll need less fabric on the top otherwise I'll be swamped...

Chippy, LOVE the first of your links. Really love... Might have to go find it somewhere...

Moonlight - I'm not sure about coral - I've never worn coral. But I like the shape a lot... [ponders coral].

OK, I'm prepared to widen my brief.

Background - I'm a designer (hence name) so I like to do something a little less traditional. (DHs colleagues regard me as a bit of a novelty). Last time I wore a red flapper-style dress. I've worn a cheongsam before (a few years ago now though. Not sure I can carry off the thigh split these days).

I'm allergic to anything prom-like IYKWIM.

I may just have to hit the west end. Heavens. I haven't been on a proper shopping trip for aaaages. Where should I go?

this? what thinkst you?

OP posts:
Sleepwhenidie · 09/05/2012 22:58

The asos one is gorgeous. Needs skin like the model's or a fake tan though I think?

MoonlightandRoses · 09/05/2012 23:00

Oh go on - try the coral!

On the Monsoon one, like the front, and the colour, but the back is a bit modest vest / prom to me, If you liked the Halston though how about mid-length aqua or
evening jumpsuit ?

designerbaby · 09/05/2012 23:02

too daytime?

OP posts:
Sleepwhenidie · 09/05/2012 23:06

Not too daytime but odd and I think would make wearer look shorter than they are with that zigzag thing.

I like the gold jumpsuit though, or is that a bit too radical for the thing you are going to Smile?

designerbaby · 09/05/2012 23:12

again too daytime??

OP posts:
LeBOF · 09/05/2012 23:19

Dressing-gown and weird knee thing going on n those, IMO, Madame. I'm trying to find the link to one I saw, hang on...

MadameChinLegs · 09/05/2012 23:22

Grin she could do An Angelina in the blue one though.
